A Note From Dr. Compton
Dear Lions Families,

I hope each of you had a wonderful weekend. The Comptons spent the weekend in Charleston. My wife, Martha, ran in the Charleston half marathon while my daughters, nephew and I ran in the Shrimp and Grits 5K (part of the Charleston Marathon weekend events).
While I was running this weekend, I kept thinking about a quote from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. During his visit to Cornell College in 1962 he said, "People fail to get along because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don’t know each other; they don’t know each other because they have not communicated with each other.”

There is so much that can be said for this quote. As I think about some of the disagreements I've seen between students, and even adults, 95% of the issues can be pinpointed back to a failure to communicate.

What’s more impressive is that in 1962, there wasn’t Facebook, Instagram, or any form of social media. In an article I read this weekend about social media and its impact on middle school students , the author made a point against the use of social media for middle school students by saying, “social media replaces learning the hard social “work” of dealing face-to-face with peers, a skill that they will need to practice to be successful in real life.”

I am constantly amazed with the wisdom of Dr. King and how his words still hold true today. On a side note, many are familiar with excerpt of Dr. King’s “I have a dream” speech. If you haven’t done so, I would encourage you to listen/watch the full 17-minute speech. It will completely change the way you think about Dr. King’s inspiring words of “I have a dream.”

Let’s have a great week Lions!

Robert Compton, Ph.D.

2019 - 2020 School Calendar
We are beginning the process to plan for the 2019 - 2020 school year. Later this month, a calendar committee (comprised of both staff, students, and parents), will meet to begin the process of developing next year's school draft calendar. To help them with this process, we're asking for your feedback. Please take just a few minutes to provide us feedback on Riverwalk Academy's school calendar. The survey can be found here .
GoKids: Carpooling at Riverwalk Academy
We're excited to partner with GoKids to help connect our families with each other who might be interested in, or are needing carpooling assistance for their child(ren).

A link was sent out to families earlier in December to set up their GoKid Account. If you did receive this link, please consider establishing your account. If you did not receive your link, please contact Ms. Mabey .
Lion Artists of the Week
(picked by Dr. Compton's daughters)
Check out Riverwalk Academy's online art gallery at  Artsonia . Artsonia is the World's Largest Student Art Museum. Yet it's so much more than that! It's a free, safe, educational program designed to connect parents and families with their child's creative activities at school.

If you have any questions, please contact  Ms. Griffith  .

2019 - 2020 Planning
Parents of current 6 - 9th grade students, we want to hear from you as we begin planning for the 2019 - 2020 school year.

Currently our 6th - 9th grade students are on a traditional, 7-period schedule (7 classes a day at 55 minutes per class and the classes run for the full year). However, there are other scheduling options that we could consider:
  • 4x4 Schedule (traditional block schedule) - 4 classes per day at 90 minutes per class and the classes run for a semester
  • 4x4 Schedule (AB block schedule) - 4 classes per day at 90 minutes per class and classes run every other day, because on the other day (B-day), it's another set of 4 classes)
  • Modified Block Schedule - where the students have 3 classes at 90 minutes per day and 2 classes at 45 minutes per day and the classes run for one semester.

Please take just a minute to let us know which schedule you prefer for the 2019 - 2020 school year.
Varsity Boys Golf
Parents of 7th - 9th grade boys, if your son would be interested in playing varsity golf for Riverwalk Academy, please let us know by clicking here .

Girls, don't worry, your season will be in the Fall. In SC, the high school league has established the fall as the season for girl's golf, and the spring for boy's golf.

Coach Ogburn is working on getting the team started and he's excited about the opportunity to bring golf to Riverwalk Academy. We'll announce an interest meeting soon.
