A Note From Dr. Compton
Dear Lions,

It is officially March...Madness.  Soon, the NCAA Tournament will start. It's an exciting time watching the 68 wind down to 1. Unfortunately, we will not see Winthrop in this year's tournament. Winthop's Coach, Pat Kesley said the following things over and over to his players and these words resonated with me as a principal, teacher and father.

We are the window through which the world views Winthrop University .” Wearing a Winthrop jersey reflects on the University as an organization. We all represent something. It could be our school. It could be our workplace. It could be our church or civic club. It could be our family. Our children need to understand that what they do reflects on the larger group. It is not just about us as we grow up.

Turn the page .” Whether it was a great win to celebrate or an agonizing loss from which to learn, Coach Kelsey constantly reminded his guys that they had to turn the page to focus on the next game. It is easy to get stuck on our victories or defeats in the past and miss the opportunities that are in the present. There is always a time when we need to “turn the page.”

Look who made a difference .”  After a game, coaches quickly pointed out the contributions of the scout team and managers just as much as the players who scored points. There are so many who play a part in a team’s success and every person matters. When our children sit the bench or play second fiddle on a team, it is so important for us to remind them that their contribution matters. No one wins by themselves.

1-2-3 Team, 4-5-6 Family ”  Win or lose, players gather together and do this chant before going their separate ways after a game. A team is a group of people working to achieve a common goal. A family is where you belong. Winthrop coaches want their players to know that they are more than a team. This is their family who loves and cares for them no matter how they played. Kids need to know that they belong no matter what their performance is.

I am so blessed to see these same values displayed in our classrooms and halls every day at Riverwalk Academy. As we move ahead, we hope that our students will not only say many of these same things, but they will show them in their actions.

Lions, thank you for all the ways you model these truths to and for our kids.

Riverwalk Academy at the
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) One Walk
Riverwalk Academy will be participating in the JDRF One Walk at Carowinds on Saturday, April 6 at 8:30 AM. The JDRF is the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and is dedicated to type 1 diabetes research. We would love to have all of our Riverwalk Lions walk with us.
We are also having a Shoe Drive and a Change Drive.
If your child donates $1 or more in a sealed envelope and gives it to their teacher or the front office, their name will be placed on a paper shoe that will be displayed in the front entrance.
If your child puts money in their grade-level bucket, their grade could win an ice cream party. The grade level with the most money in donations by Friday, March 29 will get ice cream sandwiches on Friday, April 5.
More information will be going home this week about the above activities. If you have questions, please contact Ms. Laster .

Social Media - A Parent's Guide
Parents, how familiar are you with your child's smart phone apps? Check out the guide below to become familiar with the different apps. Please pay close attention to the "red zone" apps.

9th Grade Parents , we've seen an increase of students secretly taking photographs and videos of each other and posting them to social media. Please remind your child that taking photos/videos of each other is a violation of Riverwalk Academy's cell phone policy and that any violation of the cell phone policy will be dealt with by the school's administration. Additionally, any student caught taking photos/videos of other students will result in the cell phone being confiscated for 30 days.
