A Note From Dr. Compton
Dear Lions,

My heart is full. We had an outstanding week last week at Riverwalk Academy and I wanted to share some of the reasons why last week was an incredible week:
  • Enrollment - as many of you know, we are projecting a 97% return rate of our current students. A few weeks ago, our lottery was held and in just 3 weeks, we've already received 81 completed enrollment packets from new students for next year. Lions, thank you all for "carrying the banner" for Riverwalk Academy.
  • Sports - our varsity track team and varsity boys golf team had their inaugural matches this past week. Our student-athletes did an outstanding job at both of their matches.
  • 5th Grade Student - One of our 5th grade students, Mizuki King, was named one of five state finalists in the Palmetto Pride: Litter Trashes Everyone Art Contest. She travels to Columbia to meet the Lt. Governor later in April.
  • 4 9th Graders Place Top 3 in State - our student chapter of BPA (Business Professionals of America) competed in the State competition last week. We had 4 students who placed in the top 3 in the state and have qualified for the national competition, which is held in California in May.
  • Our Pride at Rock Hill Adventure Air - families, you thoroughly impressed me (and have impressed Rock Hill Adventure Air). The number of you who showed up for last Thursday's PTO spirit night at Rock Hill Adventure Air was overwhelming. I found out from the manager at Rock Hill Adventure Air that our group was the largest they've seen.
  • Beta Club Project - I was impressed with how many middle and high school beta club students and parents came out on Saturday to work on a "lunch location" beautification project. Thanks to the work of these students (and their parents), our middle and high school students will have a new location to eat lunch on Tuesday.
  • "Going for the Green" PTO Fundraiser - as you all know, the PTO is working feverishly on a large project. Working with a local business owner, they are working to turn our grounds "green." I just looked at the list of our Pride who have given and I absolutely loved seeing that we've had parents, grandparents, community partners, and staff all donating to this cause. The project is a win-win for everyone: our grounds will look colorful (other than red/orange clay) and our students will have a place to play/sit/frolic. Pride, the PTO is close to 10% of the goal. Please consider helping out (no donation is too small).
  • Student Blog - Thanks to Mr. Loyst and his 8th Grade Journalism students, Riverwalk Academy now has a student blog. Please consider following along here.

I can't wait to see what's in store for this week. Go Lions!

Middle School Teacher Olympics at Adventure Air Sports
Lions, do you recognize these four teachers in the photos taken during their glory days? These four middle school teachers will be representing Riverwalk Academy on Thursday during  Adventure Air Sports Rock Hill 's Middle School Teacher Olympics. The games begin at 6:00 pm and spectator admission is only $3.00 and each of you are invited (not just middle school students). The school with the most spectators will get 10 passes to the park and the winning middle school team will win medals, a trophy for the school, and 100% of all spectator admissions. Please come out and cheer on the Mod Squad (mod being short for modular unit). Let's show all the middle schools in the area why our Pride is the best.
2019 - 2020 School Calendar
On behalf of the calendar committee, we appreciated all the feedback you provided on the school calendar. The 2019 - 2020 has been approved by the school board. Click the image for a larger view.
Riverwalk Academy at the
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) One Walk
Riverwalk Academy will be participating in the JDRF One Walk at Carowinds on Saturday, April 6 at 8:30 AM. The JDRF is the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and is dedicated to type 1 diabetes research. We would love to have all of our Riverwalk Lions walk with us.
We are also having a Shoe Drive and a Change Drive.
If your child donates $1 or more in a sealed envelope and gives it to their teacher or the front office, their name will be placed on a paper shoe that will be displayed in the front entrance.
If your child puts money in their grade-level bucket, their grade could win an ice cream party. The grade level with the most money in donations by Friday, March 29 will get ice cream sandwiches on Friday, April 5.
More information will be going home this week about the above activities. If you have questions, please contact Ms. Laster .

Riverwalk Academy BPA Heading to Nationals
This past week, 9th grade students in our chapter of Business Professionals of America competed in the State competition that was held at Winthrop University. All the students did an outstanding job in their events, especially since it was the first year for the team, and that we were competing against high school juniors and seniors.

We had several students place in the top 3 in the State. Jesse Matthews finished third in the state in the entrepreneurship (individual) competition. The global marketing team of Cody Brien, Tyson Brien, and Chad Salyer earned a 1st place finish in the state. The mentioned students have qualified to compete in the national competition and leadership conference, which takes place in Anaheim, CA in May.
Congatulations Athletes
Our varsity track and varsity boys golf teams were in action last week for their inaugural matches (in school history). The track team traveled to Northwestern High to take on Northwestern and Ft. Mill High Schools. Several Lions placed in their heats. Way to go Lions!

The boys golf team traveled to River Hills Country Club to take on Clover and Indian Land High Schools. The boys did well and we're so proud of them.
Thank You Beta Club
Shout out to our middle and high school Beta Club students for not only identifying a way they can improve their school experience, but for organizing every aspect of their service project. Thanks to the students, their families, their advisors, and community partners ( "Brilin Electric, LLC" ), come Tuesday, the middle and high school students will have a new shaded outdoor lunch and recreation area.
