A Note From Dr. Compton
Dear Lions,

Today, I had the pleasure of hearing Palmer Chinchen speak at my church. He's a pastor from Arizona and grew up in Africa. His topic today was about what he learned growing up along side the Sapo Tribe (an African Tribe). His words spoke to me as it relates to being a member of a Pride, alongside many of you.

His point was that the reason "tribe life" was so successful was each member of the tribe would unite around a cause and because of their mass (having so many members), they have the power and resources to initiate change and accomplish so much more than any individual could alone. They are not an organization or a business; they are not about making more money. They are about their common desires of supporting each other and being on the mission together.

The connection for me, as it relates to the Riverwalk Academy Pride, is that the same is true for us. Riverwalk Academy is not the school it is today because of any one person. We are who we are because of every member of our Pride: teachers, staff, parents, and students. We do not have one, two, or a few excellent teachers, we have a Pride filled with excellent teachers. We don't have just a few students who do great things, we have a Pride filled with students who do great things.

The same thing can be said about our parents, we don't have just a few who "go above and beyond," we have a Pride full that goes above and beyond. Please understand that "going above and beyond" does not necessary equate having given lots of money. Yes, we've had quite a few Pride (parents, teachers, board members, and community members) give a lot of money recently during the PTO "Going for the Green" fundraiser (which is going to have such a positive impact on the school), however, there are many more ways that each of us can go above and beyond to make our Pride even more strong. I hope each of you will consider one, or more, of these options:

  • PTO's Going for the Green - This project is in need of financial contributions which will help bring much needed green grass to the left side of our building and mulch around some of the other areas around the playground and modular unit.
  • PTO's Community Day - This Saturday, the PTO is hosting a community day where they, and several of our classes and clubs, have put together some outdoor projects that need anything from "helping hands" to a little grunt work.
  • Carrying the Banner - Pride, I see so many of your social media posts about #WhyRiverwalk and it makes me glow. Just yesterday, a current parent tagged our school in a comment she left on a friend's post who was venting about about having hours of unnecessary homework a night. I saw two this past week from two separate families who tagged our school in a comment because one of his friends was complaining about having uncompassionate teachers at their school and another whose friend was upset about her daughter getting "lost in the crowd" and left behind at her school.

Lions, thank you for being part of our Pride and thank you for what you do to help make a difference for Riverwalk Academy.

Let's have an outstanding week!

Going for the Green
Thank you for all the support so far. Every donation helps, no matter how big or small. With your help we hope to reach our goal so we can provide our school with mulch, plants and the much needed grass areas for our students to use.

Parents, we have a day filled with a variety of beatification projections that we need your help with. If everyone pitches in, imagine how beautiful our campus would look. For more information, please click here .
Families, we need your help to give our campus the beautiful grass it deserves. Our families will appreciate it and our students will too. Please consider helping out. Donate here .
Middle School Teacher Olympics at Adventure Air Sports
Lions, thank you for coming out to support the Riverwalk Academy middle school teachers during their Middle School Teacher Olympics this past Thursday. While the Lions didn't bring home the gold, we did win an award, that we believe is even more prestigious. The Lions brought home the Spectator Award" for having the most spectators in attendance.

Here's video of the Lions during their final event: team obstacle course.
Middle/High DIY Club - Donations Needed
Mr. Loyst, middle/high school english teacher is starting a DIY club this Friday and he's in-need of donations:

I wanted to send out a quick request for donations of any types of tools and/or materials you may have and no longer want/need. Hand tools (screwdrivers, wrenches, tape measures, etc), safety equipment (glasses, gloves, dust masks), cleaning materials (old sheets for drop cloths, vacuums, brooms and dust pans), painting supplies (brushes, mixing sticks, tape), building materials (wood, screws), extension cords, or anything else related to construction. If you're in a spring cleaning mood and have an old shed with some of this stuff, the students and I would greatly appreciate some starter equipment and supplies. Plus, it's a beautiful time of year to be outside. Please email me if you have any contributions. Thank you.

Riverwalk Academy at the
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) One Walk
Riverwalk Academy will be participating in the JDRF One Walk at Carowinds on Saturday, April 6 at 8:30 AM. The JDRF is the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and is dedicated to type 1 diabetes research. We would love to have all of our Riverwalk Lions walk with us.
We are also having a Shoe Drive and a Change Drive.
If your child donates $1 or more in a sealed envelope and gives it to their teacher or the front office, their name will be placed on a paper shoe that will be displayed in the front entrance.
If your child puts money in their grade-level bucket, their grade could win an ice cream party. The grade level with the most money in donations by Friday, March 29 will get ice cream sandwiches on Friday, April 5.
More information will be going home this week about the above activities. If you have questions, please contact Ms. Laster .
