Economic Development Annual Report

2023 Annual Report

We are excited to present the Economic Development Department’s 2023 Annual Report. This year, we had several economic development announcements, most notably the historic Wells Fargo expansion. The $87 million investment is the largest commercial office investment and project employment announcement in Roanoke County history. Carilion expanded its presence at Tanglewood with the opening of Carilion Mental Health. New restaurants and retailers opened, including the highly anticipated Chili’s. Our department highlighted Roanoke County’s exceptional businesses as part of Manufacturing Day and Business Appreciation Month.

All of these have been made possible by our supportive leadership and partners. We look forward to continuing collaborative successes in 2024!

Business Spotlight

This month, the spotlight is on Cox Communications!

Cox Communications has connected the Roanoke Valley for nearly 50 years. In fact, Roanoke is the oldest Cox market in Virginia! Over the years, they have expanded their services from cable television to include high-speed internet, phone, home automation, and now Cox Mobile. Cox's economic impact on the local community is substantial, contributing nearly $7 million in annual payroll and $1 million in taxes and franchise fees. Beyond financial support, Cox actively engages in local nonprofits, sponsoring the "Youth Collaborative" with Boys & Girls Clubs and the West End Center, as well as supporting six Roanoke-area organizations with $5,000 Cox Charities grants in 2023.

With about 100 employees deeply committed to the community, Cox thrives on Roanoke's unique qualities. Roanoke's natural beauty and leadership in research and STEM fields make it an ideal home for Cox. The company's recent success story involves a network expansion that connected over 700 previously unserved residents to broadband, made possible through a $6 million joint investment and partnership with Roanoke County, Virginia and the Commonwealth of Virginia.

As a technological powerhouse and community champion, Cox Communications stands as a symbol of innovation, connectivity, and dedicated service, weaving itself seamlessly into the fabric of Roanoke County's success.
