Roaring through the Month
Now is a perfect time to talk with your students about finishing the semester strong.
At this point in the semester, finishing strong is the goal, but “strength” is defined in a variety of ways, all of which can lead to success.

For some students, finishing strong is about taking a good look at their progress to-date and determining whether an adjustment in the plan is warranted. Struggling in a class or two is not necessarily a sign that a student should try a different major; it may just be an indication that the student needs to approach the class or classes differently. Discuss these kinds of classes with your students. See if they can identify the source of the problem. For some, work hours may be the culprit, but the students may need to work to pay for their education. Help them connect to the ISU Career Center and Handshake (on-campus employers are typically eager to work around students’ schedules) and tutoring services when appropriate. Remind them to keep an open line of communication with instructors. Finally, for all students, keeping in touch with their advisor is a critical success tip, but If your students need to regroup—to rethink their schedule or major—encourage them to do so with the help of a professional advisor

During final exams week, remind your students to protect their well-being. The brain’s ability to process and store information is dependent upon healthy sleep habits. Encourage your students to schedule time for study followed by some downtime or recreation and a good night’s sleep. Students who are feeling particularly stressed or overwhelmed can get help from Counseling & Testing (or CATS) services, and a variety of de-stress programming is offered during final exams week. Remind your student to check out the Activities Calendar and keep an eye on the digital student newsletter, Roar Weekly, for current information.
Is your student looking for a fun way to connect? Try out the Jungle!
Our students just posted an invitation to Join the Jungle in the student newsletter, Roar Weekly.  The Jungle is a student-led group that is determined to set ISU’s Student section at athletic events apart from all other universities. They say they would love to have every student at the games, showing their pride for our school’s teams. The Jungle’s purpose is to make ISU’s student section the best around, reminding us that it is not the size of the school but the pride of the students that counts. For more information, students may follow @thejungleofisu on Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter.
Might your student like an opportunity to participate in a paid research study?
One of our faculty in the Psychology department is looking for students who might be interested in participating in a paid research study.

They are looking for non-smoking adults who consume caffeine to participate in a study on caffeine and cognition. Participants will first be weighed, then asked to drink a beverage (orange flavored TANG drink containing sugar) that may or may not contain caffeine. Next, they will complete some surveys, read some short passages, and finally answer questions about the passages. The study will take approximately 1.5 hours, and participants will receive either $5 for each half hour of participation. Interested students should contact the lab at fulton.cognition.lab@gmail.com to learn more and/or sign up.
January is the time to start thinking about scholarships and summer financial aid.
Beginning early in January, ALL current and new incoming students should be applying for scholarships in the Bengal Online Scholarship System (BOSS) for Fall 2022. We encourage all students to be very active in BOSS from the months of January through April. Students should watch their ISU e-mail for new scholarship opportunities in which they may be eligible for as well as if they received any scholarship offers. Visit isu.academicworks.com/users/sign_in

Students who are attending Summer 2022 who want to be considered for federal financial aid, should complete their 2021-2022 FAFSA (if they haven’t already) and will need to submit the Summer Supplement form that will be available on the Financial Aid website beginning March 1: isu.edu/financialaid/. Students must be registered for summer courses prior to submitting this form.

Students are encouraged to complete their 2022-2023 FAFSA by March 1, 2022. 2020 tax and income information will be used to complete this FAFSA. Students should watch their BengalWeb and ISU e-mail for correspondence regarding their financial aid for the 2022-2023 academic year. Visit studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa
