30 Li: fire over fire

she's a middle daughter
her halo matted messy mostly curled in
ever-fading shades of brown
always aware when someone looks her way
she'll stare back and
force an acknowledgement from the shiest of men
she shines
her friendship clings, attracts
always moves about in twos or threes
talking about generalities since
she'd always much rather leave specifics
for others to discuss in quieter tones
as flames do, she does
consuming points of view
searching for exhilarations
conversations and amusements
while effortless joy splashes and stains
from one person to the next until
it simmers warming
but still and when she leaves
there are no leavings besides these:
the memory of her jet-black eyes
the wish to see them again.

60 Chieh: limitation

each when the musics
pause we hear
the occasional clink of glass
voices conversational with words
that will not be
discerned
still every one can see who is clever
and who feigns again
by how they hold what they hold
a limp cigarette
the stem of their cup of wine still filled
my attention
here lacks a harpsichord
playing
its aloof elegant
pouncing notes
its rapid fluctuations (a hummingbird's
pause-and-shift floating flight)
those gathered here
cluster compartmentalized
by familiarity and shared
serendipities
create a slowly swirling geometry
an asymmetrical kaleidoscope
invisible barriers of social convention
enforce a maze complex
between the rodent and cheese
i see
you though next to me
i may fail to reach out on time this time again
flail
muted joviality masks despondency
as i try my way from one coterie to the next
desire
outpaces my wit
but not
evidently yours: "hi".

23 Po: the centre cannot hold

each conversation progressed
adding both flourishes and foundation
to the architecture
of the edifice in which we hoped
to eventually light a hearth
weather the night's storms
from some protruding balcony, watch the world
turn
there is trust involved, yes
the beams and arches
but we colored with lust
illicit whispers and
subjugations
thrillingly narrowed stairways
spiraling
some leading nowhere
some inverting gravitational conventions
to the east, a view to a facsimile
of your face mountainous
rising from a sea
to the north of mine
not with a wink but a smirk
the sun and moon we placed both directly
above playfully
in eternal conjugation since the eclipse's light
softened your complexion
looking back
there wasn't any one misplaced brick
nor miscalculation
no one decision nor reaction
rash nor deliberate
which cascaded us
the atmospherics had worked on our favor
but and still
there became a crack fast
free
it all didn't implode
collapse: it split.

1 Qian: firmness - 1945

a silence eventually disappears
with the vacuum's snap between these, our lips
clothes come off chasing our shed fears
free, our bodies dream and propel our hips
further, faster, famished for it's been years
or never been like this: apocalypse
our limbs wet with sweat, our fate wet with tears
at last the whirlwind rips the sail, time drifts

we hold each other but we feel again
each other landmark passed in our lost way
we hold each other but reach for a when
yet to come, we hope to heal, and we pray

our eyes met two nights and a day ago
i'd lacked the courage then to say hello.

40 Hsieh: thunder and rain set in

i had never before forgiven
in this way i have now
never had had the opportunity
not by this order of
magnitude
back then
the plains were vast
travelers and hunters
explored in peril (fatal,
perpetual) they could
lose both
origin and destination
the lands uninhabited are different
substantially
from those on which we've set our tracks
from those we've decided what they ought to be
their scent and taste
the horizon's shape
he must have been thirsty
the first man to have seen
a landscape shifting
by an obstinacy of buffaloes
numbered by the thousands
he must have regretted with each step
what all was left behind
still attached to the carcasses lined
but there is a measure to what may be carried
daily slights
bloodless injuries
nicks at our self esteem
and this
harm direct
intent
we are some place we've never been
thirsty i will lead our way.

20 Guan: contemplating - 1985

there's that one
place
point from where it bounces aligned but
the sequenced lights don't reach the top
they stop
close enough to sweat my
hands
i shake dry through the cold air
always colder
darker in the arcade
to make the bright brighter
as it speeds
my breath stays and my eyes
not so much follow but rather twitch
a pulse ahead of the expectation
in this chromed cacophony
i find ablution
a moment of purifying exhilaration
a wind whose flow constant
bends then stills
the prairie grass
each blade prone
curved
blessed
the machinery gingerly
coys the laws of motion and conservation
self-same that demagnetize stars and unthread constellations
though my mind guides
my flesh limits
not so my will
want
focus
so many gears mazed
stacked intentions
awaiting that one ricochet near here
there.
