A New Chapter in Zambia - Introducing Kujana Camp, Lower Zambezi

Soft opening in October 2026

In its 40th year of operating across Africa, Robin Pope Safaris introduces Kujana Camp — a new safari experience shaped by decades of understanding what makes time in the wild truly meaningful.

From its beginnings in the South Luangwa to its camps across Malawi and Mana Pools, the company has always focused on creating journeys that feel grounded, authentic, and deeply connected to place. Kujana Camp continues that ethos.

Set along a quiet channel off the Zambezi River, beneath the shade of winterthorn trees and overlooking slow‑moving water, the tented camp offers an immersive safari defined as much by stillness as by movement.

The Camp

Kujana sits on a small island within the National Park’s Discovery Channel, an area known for strong wildlife and varied habitats. A short transfer from Jeki Airstrip makes it easy to reach while still feeling wonderfully secluded.

With just four tents at launch, the camp offers an intimate, low‑impact experience for up to eight guests. Each tent features a private deck overlooking the channel, an open‑air bathroom, solar‑powered lighting and fans, and natural evening cooling — all part of the camp’s fully solar‑run design.

The Experience

Kujana’s defining feature is the blend of land and water. Days follow the rhythm of the environment, shaped by wildlife movement, seasonal conditions, and guest interest rather than a fixed schedule.

Guests explore through game drives, walking safaris, boating, fishing, and birding, staying closely connected to the landscape whether on foot, by vehicle, or on the water.

Wildlife & Setting

This stretch of the Zambezi River supports a rich concentration of wildlife. Elephant and buffalo move across the floodplains, with lion, leopard, and abundant antelope adding to a healthy predator–prey dynamic. Hippo and crocodile are ever‑present along the channel.

Birdlife is exceptional, with more than 350 species recorded — fish eagles, herons, and storks creating a constant sense of life along the water.

The Zambezi escarpment rises behind the floodplains, giving the area dramatic scale and making it an outstanding setting for photography.

· Opening: October – November 15 2026 (soft opening).

· Season: May 1 – November 15.

· Capacity: 4 tents (8 guests).

· Access: Jeki Airstrip + short transfer (approximately 30 mins).

· Child Policy: Minimum 12 years. All under 16 to share with an adult.

Tena Tena and Luangwa River Camp Refreshed

This year marks exciting updates for two much‑loved Robin Pope Safaris camps. Tena Tena, celebrating 40 years, receives a well‑deserved refresh with a new look, two additional tents, and now — by popular request — WiFi in all tents.

For returning guests, the essence of Tena Tena remains unchanged. While the guest tents have a fresh new look, the main areas stay exactly as they’ve always been, preserving the character and atmosphere long associated with the camp.

Bertie has overseen the entire project, working closely with the team to bring the vision to life — and the results speak for themselves. After just over a month of being open, guest feedback has been exceptional, with many long‑time visitors embracing the renewed Tena Tena while recognising the spirit they’ve always loved.

Luangwa River Camp also received a thoughtful refresh this year. The sunken bathtubs have been replaced with elegant freestanding tubs, rooms updated with stylish new furniture, and sleek sliding doors now take the place of the traditional wooden ones. The pool area has enjoyed some much‑needed attention too, creating an inviting space for guests to unwind between safari activities.

Despite challenging conditions — including severe floods earlier in the year — the team worked tirelessly to complete the upgrades on time. Their dedication shows in every detail, and the results speak for themselves.

Malawi: A Year of Deeper Exploration

Malawi is often praised for its striking landscapes, pristine Lake Malawi beaches, and memorable safari experiences — but its true character runs deeper. Known as the Warm Heart of Africa, the country is a vibrant cultural mosaic, rich in tradition, music, history, and artistry that invites travelers to connect more meaningfully.

A standout highlight is the annual three day Lake of Stars Music Festival, held on the shimmering shores of Lake Malawi. This internationally recognised event brings together local and global artists in a celebration of Malawian creativity and identity. It’s one of several cultural gatherings that showcase the nation’s spirit, alongside the Zomba City Festival and Cape Maclear Carnival, each offering its own blend of music, art, and community.

Culture in Malawi extends far beyond its festivals. Even in the calm setting of Pumulani Lodge, the country’s spirit is felt — from occasional Gule Wamkulu appearances to intimate performances by local bands, where handcrafted drums and melodic vocals create an authentic sense of place.

For guests wanting deeper immersion, guided visits to nearby villages and lively market days offer a genuine glimpse into everyday Malawian life, full of color, rhythm, and community.

History lovers can step even further back in time at the Chongoni Rock Art Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the densest collection of Stone Age rock art in Central Africa. Meanwhile, Mua Mission showcases Malawi’s artistic excellence, from beautifully crafted wood carvings to a fascinating cultural museum.

As part of the annual review, rates across the RPS portfolio have been adjusted by an average of 5%. Please refer to the Agents Portal for applicable nett rates.
The accommodation rates are open‑ended, remaining valid for 2027 and beyond until a revised rate sheet is issued.
