A community-led vision

The goal of the Rochester Education Fellowship is to engage, empower, and mobilize Rochester’s students, families, educators, and community members to demand and advocate for high-quality education and highly effective educators. Using the strength of a powerful movement of activated community members, I am working to develop a shared vision for high-quality education, co-create priorities and goals, and design a plan of action to support and strengthen Rochester’s public school systems to provide more high-quality educational opportunities for our community’s students and families.

Over the next several months, I will listen and learn from our community in effort to address key questions including:

  • What is a high-quality education?
  • What should Rochester's public schools provide for our families and students?
  • What do great schools look like?
  • What are the characteristics of highly-effective educators?

The voices of our students, parents, and educators are essential to defining and providing high-quality education opportunities for Rochester's children. Watch this introductory video to learn how we will move our community forward together.

Buses, Bananas, Books

How would you spend more than $1,000,000,000 to ensure that our children have access to high-quality schools and highly effective educators?

…Academic interventions, social emotional supports, restorative practices, technology, transportation, food services, materials and textbooks, technology, career and technical education opportunities, extended day programming, teacher retention strategies – or something else?

Supporting the education of 35,528 children at 56 traditional elementary and secondary schools and programs, 14 charter schools, and 1,384 inter-district choice placements, the Rochester City School District operates with a budget of more than $1,000,000,000.

Over the next several weeks, the members of the Rochester Board of Education will educate our community and ask for input on adopting a budget for the coming school year that responds to the needs of students, families, educators, and industry.

Tune in for the Community Budget Webinar on March 2 at 6:00 p.m., make your voice heard at upcoming budget hearings, and reach out to board members directly.

The opportunities far outweigh the challenges in addressing education in Rochester. Together we can prioritize and respond to the educational needs of our community.

Blog Bites

The first blog is up! It examines how we pick schools for our children. Do we make decisions based on academic ranking, safety, or proximity? Or is it some other factor altogether?

Did you make your voice heard? If not, reach out to let me know how you make these decisions for your children.
