I am still discovering NYS Permit holders that are unaware of the law that requires you to recertify your pistol license.
This started with the UN-SAFE Act in 2013. At that time, all pistol license holders were required to do a recertification every 5 years. So essentially, anybody who had their permit issued prior to 2013 had to recertify prior to their issue date in 2018.
With the passage of the CCIA in 2022, the law was amended so that anyone that possessed a concealed carry license now has to recertify every 3 years. If you only had a premise permit, then you needed to continue recertifying every 5 years.
There has been a quiet increase in enforcement in this. I have started to hear more and more about permit holders receiving letters informing them that they need to do relinquish or turn in their pistol licenses and any firearms. That means all firearms. Typically it is due to their failure to recertify.
When the state passed this law they made the price of not recertifying fairly high. You could be facing the loss of your gun rights all together and you most likely will not ever get your pistol permit back
If you do not remember ever doing a recertification, I would strongly recommend you do it immediately.
If you don't remember when your last recertification was, I would strongly recommend checking and then doing it immediately
I would also recommend checking on the following website no matter what to make sure that your date hasn't changed without your knowledge
DO IT NOW.
Don't lose your 2A rights over a stupid technicality.
Special note. I did not write the law nor did I agree with it when it was passed. This information is for your use so use it as you see fit. If all you want to do is complain about how unconstitutional it is, or make other statements online, you are definitely wasting that energy when you could be spending it by getting into the fight. Get active. Contact your local representatives and educate them. Educate others. Join organizations that are pro Second Amendment such as the Firearms policy coalition, Second Amendment foundation, New York State Rifle and Pistol Association, and more. Put your effort where your mouth is and we could start affecting some change
Here's the link to go and check or do your recertification.
