I am still discovering NYS Permit holders that are unaware of the law that requires you to recertify your pistol license.

This started with the UN-SAFE Act in 2013. At that time, all pistol license holders were required to do a recertification every 5 years. So essentially, anybody who had their permit issued prior to 2013 had to recertify prior to their issue date in 2018.

With the passage of the CCIA in 2022, the law was amended so that anyone that possessed a concealed carry license now has to recertify every 3 years. If you only had a premise permit, then you needed to continue recertifying every 5 years.

There has been a quiet increase in enforcement in this. I have started to hear more and more about permit holders receiving letters informing them that they need to do relinquish or turn in their pistol licenses and any firearms. That means all firearms. Typically it is due to their failure to recertify.

When the state passed this law they made the price of not recertifying fairly high. You could be facing the loss of your gun rights all together and you most likely will not ever get your pistol permit back

If you do not remember ever doing a recertification, I would strongly recommend you do it immediately.

If you don't remember when your last recertification was, I would strongly recommend checking and then doing it immediately

I would also recommend checking on the following website no matter what to make sure that your date hasn't changed without your knowledge

DO IT NOW.

Don't lose your 2A rights over a stupid technicality.

Special note. I did not write the law nor did I agree with it when it was passed. This information is for your use so use it as you see fit. If all you want to do is complain about how unconstitutional it is, or make other statements online, you are definitely wasting that energy when you could be spending it by getting into the fight. Get active. Contact your local representatives and educate them. Educate others. Join organizations that are pro Second Amendment such as the Firearms policy coalition, Second Amendment foundation, New York State Rifle and Pistol Association, and more. Put your effort where your mouth is and we could start affecting some change

Here's the link to go and check or do your recertification.

Dave has developed a new course!

Custom Defensive Pistol.

Your Skills. Your Pace. Your Goals.

Custom Defensive Pistol is built around you. Whether you're new to carrying a handgun or you've been training for years, this class meets you exactly where you are and helps you get meaningfully better—fast.

We keep class sizes small and the approach deeply personal. Right from the start, your instructor runs a quick diagnostic to assess your current skill level, strengths, and priorities. From there, the entire session is customized: extra time on rock-solid fundamentals for newer shooters, or advanced techniques for those ready to push their limits. Everyone gets individualized feedback and real-time coaching. This isn’t a rigid, checklist curriculum—it’s flexible and adaptable to each student.

What Sets This Class Apart

  • Truly individualized coaching—no “one size fits all” pace
  • Immediate feedback and real-time adjustments to your skill development
  • Emphasis on the skills that matter most for defensive handgun use
  • Safe, supportive environment where questions are encouraged

What you will need to bring:

Firearm & Ammunition

  • Reliable defensive handgun (semi-auto or revolver; your everyday carry gun is ideal - and preferred!)
  • A minimum of 350–400 rounds of quality ammunition
  • At least 3 magazines (or speedloaders for revolvers)

Holster & Support Gear

  • Strong-side holster (outside or inside waistband; must securely retain the gun and allow one-handed reholstering) IWB or AIWB allowed
  • Sturdy belt or method that supports your holster and mag pouches
  • Magazine pouch or carrier (at least 2 magazines accessible)
  • Concealment garment (e.g., jacket, vest, or cover shirt) if you plan to practice concealed draws

Protective & Comfort Items

  • Electronic ear protection (preferred) or quality ear plugs
  • Wrap-around eye protection (clear lenses; must be rated ANSI Z87.1 or higher)
  • Billed hat or cap (helps keep hot brass off your head)
  • Closed-toe shoes (no sandals or flip-flops)
  • Weather-appropriate clothing (range can be hot/cold; avoid low-cut shirts to prevent brass burns)
  • Note-taking materials (pen and notepad or phone for personal notes)

Course announcement!

The USCCA Training Tour is coming to us!!!

On June 13 and 14, the originator, the guy that created the Defensive Pistol Program, and Dave are going to be conducting the 2 day DPP course!!!

The USCCA’s Defensive Pistol Program (DPP) is a comprehensive course designed to help participants develop essential defensive shooting skills using both live-fire and dry-fire training methods. The program focuses on both objective and performance based training. Utilizing motor learning and skill-acquisition science, DPP ensures participants are equipped with the knowledge and practical experience needed to effectively use a pistol in a defensive context.

The live-fire program is designed to introduce responsible gun owners to the safe handling and effective use of a pistol while developing essential defensive shooting skills to be used in a concealed carry and/or home-defense context.

The program is designed for new pistol owners, the novice, and even experienced gun owners who wish to learn about concealed carry and defensive use of their handgun. If you have not taken a concealed carry type course, this is a great way to start! The adaptable/adjustable curriculum for this course is molded to the attendee’s skill development compared to a curriculum based approach.

Range (dry and live fire) topics:

Fundamentals of Defensive Marksmanship

Presentation From Concealment

The Balance of Speed & Precision

You're safe until you're not. For a lot of people, a comfort level exists because they live in a low crime area or they work at a relatively safe job, etc. I learned a long time ago that denial is a soft fuzzy blanket that we wrap ourselves in - and it's an unsafe state of mind. There are predators among us who will take every opportunity to do whatever it is they want; all they need is the chance. We'll train you to be prepared and stay safe.
