Rock the Week

22 March 2023

Golden Anniversary News!

Reunion of Friends: Still Rockin’ On is HAPPENING on April 30, 2023. We’re receiving your forms and photos for our Reunion. They are such fun to read! We’re hearing that you plan to attend. That’s great news!

Here’s another way to participate:

Do you have a great Shadow Rock memory you’d like to share on video?

Of a really cold Easter Sunrise service?

Of an evening with asylum-seekers?

Of playing on the Preschool Playground?

Of dancing at a Fifties Night?

Of a meaningful memorial service?

Of marching in solidarity on Phoenix streets?

Please share this special memory with us! Use your phone to make a short (two minutes or less) video sharing your memory. You're also invited to attach a photo to accompany your video.

Send your video file to motion@starter.video. Videos will be compiled professionally to create a keepsake video for our celebration. You can also record a memory at Reunion Sunday. Just bring yourself and your story to the Chapel after worship on April 30.

Here’s the fine print, friends:

Videos will be edited for length and content.

The combined video will be shared publicly on Shadow Rock’s website and social media.

Social Justice Actions in Support of Trans Siblings

Dear Ones, transgender people (especially trans youth) are the target of 100+ bills in state legislatures across the country. Our values of inclusion and justice invite our response.

You can use this link to let local lawmakers know how you feel.

If you feel like you're still learning about gender issues (including sex assigned at birth, gender identity, gender roles, and gender expression), you're in good company! Language and practice around gender is changing quickly. This article might help you fill in some gaps in your knowledge. If you have questions about gender and sexuality, ASK! Reach out to Karen by email or on Sunday morning.

Continuing to learn and grow is part of our calling as people of faith and conscience.

Lent and Easter Updates

Just a reminder that our Lenten offering supports the Refugee Resettlement Fund. Together, we're helping fulfill a promise made to many in Afghanistan. Envelopes are available on Sunday mornings or you can click the button below.

Another (very different) opportunity to give is approaching. If you would like to contribute wrapped non-chocolate candies or tiny toys for our community egg hunt, bring your goodies by the church office by April 2. Chocolate melts quickly, so any donated chocolates will be taken care of by the church staff.

Last Sunday was the fourth Sunday in Lent. A couple of people gave community care updates... and over 40 Thinking of You cards were sent! Cards are a lovely way that we stay connected to one another. If there's someone on your mind, act now! Drop Lois an email to send a Thinking of You message electronically.

Sacred Sites Spring 2023 - Wat Promkunaram

The Sacred Sites team invites you to visit Wat Prokunaram for the community's spring festival on April 16. We'll leave Shadow Rock immediately following worship and plan to return around 4:00 pm.

It is customary to take food to contribute to the event. We invite you to do so and suggest that you use disposable serving pieces.

Doug and Emmy Davis are coordinating this event. For questions, you're welcome to call them at 602-867-3281. Get all the details with last Sunday's bulletin insert.

2023 All-Church Read

Get ready to join a denomination-wide book club.

As the entire United Church of Christ prepares for this summer's General Synod, everyone is invited to read together. The all-church read is Ibram X. Kendi's How to Be an Antiracist.

Let's read and discuss! Get your copy here. Stay tuned for more information about the all-church read. Already reading? Reach out to Karen to help with a discussion group.
