Easter at Shadow Rock

Thanks to everyone who contributed to our Easter celebration this past week. Eastertide continues through May; we move into joy with one another.

May Group Spiritual Direction

May brings new opportunities to explore community spirituality. Group spiritual direction (prayerful listening to one another) is available on these Mondays: May 1, 8, and 15. We will meet via Zoom, 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. You can expect some silence and prayer, along with time to share what's on your heart. For questions and to get the Zoom link, email Karen.

2023 All-Church Read

Get ready to join a denomination-wide book club.

As the entire United Church of Christ prepares for this summer's General Synod, everyone is invited to read together. The all-church read is Ibram X. Kendi's How to Be an Antiracist.

Let's read and discuss! Get your copy here. Anti-racism in general and Dr. Kendi's work specifically will be the topic for adult spiritual formation May 7, 14, and 21. How to Be an Antiracist is a masterful study of language and clarity. Expect a challenging and compassionate reading experience.

Shoutin' From the Mountaintop - A Report From Your Church Board

We do our best to communicate with everyone, but there's always a lot going on, so you may not be aware of all the wonderful things happening at Shadow Rock. For the next few weeks (probably through May), Rock the Week will include a series of short articles covering all aspects of our life together. If you read something that piques your interest, warms your heart, or invites you to participate, contact the church office, and we’ll be happy to point you in the right direction! This week's report is from Sue Lefebvre on a ministry birthed during the pandemic, Sacred Sites Ministry.

More than thirty Shadow Rockers have been visiting sacred sites since 2021. Our first visits, to Montezuma Castle, St. Anthony’s Greek Orthodox Monastery, and the Verde River helped us understand the importance of water in the religious life of humans. Because water is necessary to life, people have called it, or the source from which it comes, “sacred.” We learned from the monks at Wat Promenkarum in far west Phoenix, that items or places are sacred because we humans deem them to be so. Thus, the Shadow Rock community is also free to designate what is sacred for each of us. We hope to discuss this at our stargazing event which will be held on June 9 in the evening. In addition, we will schedule an overnight trip to Rock Art Ranch near Winslow as soon as they open their doors on May 3. Please let Arlene Dominguez know if you are interested in that trip which will be both rugged and profound. Also, consider being part of the planning group for next year. For the next year, we are considering visits to the Heard Museum, Wat Promenkarum Temple, and other unique locations.

Interested? Stay tuned to Rock the Week and other Shadow Rock communications to learn about future events. You're also invited to let Arlene know of your interest at 602-882-0967.
