Rock the Week

17 May 2023

This Sunday, May 21

The Shadow Rock "bundle" this week includes Adult Spiritual Formation at 9:00 am (Multipurpose Room), worship celebration at 10:15 am (Sanctuary), and Coffee Chat at 11:15 am (Smith Hall). Grateful for Coffee Chat and grateful to the Stuart-Botticelli family for hosting.

During spiritual formation in May we've been talking about anti-racism, honoring the work of Ibram X. Kendi and the All-UCC book selection, How to Be an Anti-Racist. This week, we'll look toward the vision of Isaiah 58: liberation as a spiritual discipline. Both those reading the book and those who are not will find an encouraging and challenging conversation.

Also happening this week: Let's Find Out! If you're new (or new-ish) among us, you're invited to a time of questions and friend-making in the Multipurpose Room following worship. Let's Find Out is aimed at folks who are considering a new or renewed commitment to our spiritual community. Feel free to bring your Coffee Chat cuppa and snacks with you. Claiming Sunday - a time for recognizing and celebrating our commitments to Shadow Rock - is planned for June 4.

Congregational Meeting on June 4

Part of our tradition in the United Church of Christ is congregational autonomy and covenant. Part of our commitment to each other is a commitment to the wellbeing and governance of our congregation.

We'll gather to discern and decide together on June 4, immediately following worship in the sanctuary.

Mental Health Sunday

This Sunday during worship, we'll focus on Mental Health Sunday. We appreciate the work of the WISE Team in making Shadow Rock a safer place for people experiencing mental illness.

988 is a new crisis line available by talk and text. Learn more here. NAMI Arizona is also a resource for individuals and families.

No matter who you are or where you are on life's journey, you are welcome here. You are loved.

Celebration of Life

Betsy Davis was a beloved member of the Shadow Rock Community. Betsy's Celebration of Life will be Sunday, June 4 at 2:00 pm. She loved to bake and share her cookies with the church family. You're invited to celebrate Betsy in the midst of missing her presence by bringing two dozen homemade cookies to share at the reception.

Concert on June 3

We're excited to host a Phoenix Children's Chorus concert at 2:00 pm on Saturday, June 3 in our sanctuary. They are expecting a crowd - yay! If you'd like to attend, please purchase a ticket online in advance.

Sneak a peek at the concert flier here.

Shoutin' From the Mountaintop - A Report From Your Church Board

We do our best to communicate with everyone, but there's always a lot going on, so you may not be aware of all the wonderful things happening at Shadow Rock. For most of the last few weeks, Rock the Week has included a series of reports covering all aspects of our life together. If you read something that piques your interest, warms your heart, or invites you to participate, contact the church office, and we’ll be happy to point you in the right direction! This week, we are pleased to share with you the work of the Facilities Team.

Currently the Facilities Team is focused on the long term care and planning for the campus infrastructure. We look at the major tasks that need to be done in order to maintain and provide the services needed for the preschool and church. This includes keeping air conditioning and heating units operational, keeping the roof structures sound, and repairing water mains and sewer lines. It also includes looking at long term cost savings, such as adding solar power generation, converting to LED lighting, and improving office productivity through new networking technology and equipment, fiber optic communications, and improved servers.

The Facility Team makes project recommendations to the Board based on its knowledge of the existing campus systems and today’s modern practices and technology. Among the projects we have accomplished over the past 7 years, are:

  • Repair or replace 7 air conditioners
  • Several Education Building roof repairs and improvements
  • Sound and lighting improvements in Smith Hall
  • Elevator hydraulics overhaul
  • Building access and security improvements
  • Information systems networking, cabling, and server improvements that support hybrid worship
  • Repair the “Rock-it” electric car
  • Overhaul of the orange folding chairs

As the campus ages, these kinds of projects become even more critical to the continued operation of Shadow Rock Church and Preschool. You've seen recently an appeal to re-energize the facilities improvement fund, "Momentum @ Work." We appreciate those who've already contributed. This ongoing giving effort ensures that the facility we love so much continues to be available for our ministries.
