ROCK THE WEEK
July 29, 2020
We Covenant
We celebrate the Shadow Rock board's decision to enter into a covenant with Dr. Rev. Patricia Standtal Clarke. This agreement will help us partner with Patricia in her unique ministry of wholeness. Look for her upcoming articles in Rock the Week and her sharing the Word About Life.

Sunday, August 2
Virtual Worship  is delivered to your inbox first thing in the morning. We live in a season with many unknowns. Is this really different from any other time or are we just more aware? Our God is known as the Unknown God. Perhaps our God is also the God of the Unknown. This is our message for Sunday. Our interview is with a long-time friend of Shadow Rock. Matt Casey is a reporter for KJZZ. We will talk about the ethics of journalism in our time of civil unrest. U se the link in the worship email to join us at 11:00 on Zoom for Coffee Chat.

Faith Formation  is on summer break until August 9th. Coming in August and Beyond: 10:30 a.m. Adult Spiritual Formation returns with two mini-series that both focus on clarity: universal human needs/values and the iceberg model of culture. Later in the fall, look for worship workshops, a deep dive into what it means to be an "ally," and creative prayer practices.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
Please be aware that our campus security alarm system has gone though an upgrade. There are new instructions for arming and disarming the building. Even though the Shadow Rock Campus is currently closed, we ask anyone who has a set of keys to the building to please contact Lois so you can get new directions for the alarm system. Thank you.
The Southwest Conference is holding an online workshop series called "Working for Racial Justice in Solidarity with the Black Community." This series takes place on Saturdays in the month of August. You can learn more about it, as well as register to attend by clicking here.
Traditionally, Shadow Rock holds a "welcome back" potluck in August to celebrate our return from Sabbath. Obviously, this year is a little bit different. We're planning to hold our first-ever Virtual Potluck! Look for more details next week but in the meantime, think about a favorite recipe you may like to share with your Shadow Rock family!

An email scam is again making the rounds. It contains a fake email address with Pastor Ken's name attached to it, asking you to contact him, or even soliciting gift card money. We want to remind you Pastor Ken, nor any member of the church staff would ever solicit a direct donation from a congregation member.

Please double-check your emails carefully - Pastor Ken's legitimate email address is [email protected], and any other addresses are spam.

Our Church Family: We have been told that Nadine Shank, who has played music for us with Walt Nielson on special Sunday mornings, has been diagnosed with Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD), a devastating neurological condition. She holds Shadow Rock in a special place in her heart, and would love to hear an encouraging word. Her address is 17 Stagecoach Road, Amherst, Massachusetts 01002.
Do you have a family member who is attending or will be attending Arizona State University this fall? There is a new initiative – UCC at ASU – that will serve as a wonderful activity and resource for those students whether attending in person or through online classes. UCC at ASU will be a recognized student organization. New and returning students will have a new pathway to connect with other students, enjoy support and gain leadership opportunities with the student organization while pursuing their studies.

Informational Zoom meetings are scheduled in early August. Learn more about it here.
Shadow Rock Campus is a designated voting location for Maricopa County. We are a voting center so anyone, regardless of their home address, may vote in person or drop off a mail-in ballot. Voting will be in Smith Hall from 9:00 a.m. till 5:00 p.m. July 22-August 3 with the exception of Sundays 7/26 and 8/2 when the voting center will be closed.

On election day, Tuesday, August 4th, the hours will be 6:00 a.m. till 7:00 p.m. For a full list of important dates to remember for this primary, including last day to request a mail-in ballot, check out the calendar here.
Focus On....
Each week we'll be spotlighting an organization or site that's worth looking into. If you would like to suggest a future group to feature, please contact Abeth .

Duet is a non-profit, interfaith organization that promotes health and well-being through its vitally needed, free-of-charge services to homebound adults, family caregivers, faith communities, and grandfamilies. We have done events with them in the past and support their mission of providing support to families and their loved ones.
Reminders While the Campus is Closed
  • Our mail service is on hold and being picked up more sporadically. If you have important mail that needs our attention, please contact Heidi and she will give you an alternate address so we can receive it quicker.
  • If you need any assistance securing groceries, medicine or toiletries, please contact us via email. We want to do our best to make sure everyone is safe and well.
  • One of the most important things we can do for each other during this time of isolation and distance is to keep in touch. We're a very social church family, and it's hard to be apart from one another! Try to take time every day or two to call, text, or email one of your Shadow Rock friends.
Supporting Shadow Rock
Thank you for your love and support of Shadow Rock! Your financial support and donations are more important than ever as we go through this unprecedented time of uncertainty. If you have questions about giving electronically, please reach out to Heidi and she'll be happy to help! You can also give to our Pastor's Charitable Fund or Facilities Improvement Fund by clicking the yellow donate button below.
