Rock the Week

31 May 2023

This Sunday, June 4

Welcome to Pride Month! In the midst of renewed attacks on LGBTQ+ people, solidarity among people of faith is more important than ever.

Coming up this Sunday at Shadow Rock is spiritual formation at 9:00 am in the Multipurpose Room and worship at 10:15 am in the Sanctuary. At 9:00, we'll begin a 3 week discussion of major events in the book of Acts, beginning (naturally) with Pentecost and the early life of the Church. During worship at 10:15 am, we'll celebrate communion and Claiming Sunday, followed by a Congregational Meeting. Look for materials, such as the agenda and budget, in Sunday morning's worship email.

Our communion offering on Sunday supports the United Church of Christ special mission offering Strengthen the Church, which provides funding for new congregations and community renewal.

Our June is looking pretty busy, friends. Sermon Reboot will be on hiatus until August.

Celebrating Milestones for our Sanctuary Families

Imagine our surprise at receiving this photo from Denise Valenzuela, Ibeth Corral's daughter. We are delighted and proud of our work alongside immigrant families and join Denise's family in their celebration.

Celebration of Life

Betsy Davis was a beloved member of the Shadow Rock Community. Betsy's Celebration of Life will be Sunday, June 4 at 2:00 pm. She loved to bake and share her cookies with the church family. You're invited to celebrate Betsy in the midst of missing her presence by bringing two dozen homemade NUT-FREE cookies to share at the reception.

Betsy's presence among us is missed, and we treasure our memories of her.

Beatitudes Lunch Together

On the first Tuesday of each month, we meet our friends who live at Beatitudes Campus at 12:00 noon in the Bistro for lunch and conversation. Our next gathering is Tuesday, June 6. Please let Lois know if you plan to attend so seating can be arranged for our group. We hope you can join us.

We will not meet in July because the first Tuesday is July 4. Go ahead and mark your calendars for August BLT: August 1 at 12:00 noon.

Dr. Cindy Hoard Book Launch

We celebrate Cindy Hoard's upcoming book, Spirit Rising! Please consider purchasing this book (which deals with Cindy's work in child psychology and her personal journey with depression) when it launches on Amazon. Launch Day purchases help promote the book online and encourage independent stores to stock it. Watch Rock the Week for Launch Day updates.

Narcan on the Shadow Rock Campus

We are grateful for Janice and Brett Morrison's presentation about Naloxone during worship this past Sunday. Naloxone injector kits are available on campus in these locations: Bride's Room and Kreider Center kitchenette (in the Sanctuary building) and front desk mailboxes and kitchen (in the Education building).

Naloxone (brand name Narcan) can save the life of a person who's experiencing a narcotics overdose. It's safe to use, even if you're not sure if an unconscious person is having an overdose. To review the instructions for administering Naloxone, please click here. If you use a Naloxone kit or see one being used, please let the office know so the medication can be replaced.

Concert on June 3

We're excited to host a Phoenix Children's Chorus concert at 6:30 pm on Saturday, June 3 in our sanctuary. The PCC folks are expecting a sold out event! If you'd like to attend, please purchase a ticket online in advance.

Sneak a peek at the concert flier here.

Learning and Growing in Community

Two quick things before you click away from Rock the Week!

  1. Memorial Day was this week... do you know its origins? Check out this resource about the beginnings of "Decoration Day" in Spring 1865.
  2. Shadow Rock Summer Cinema returns June 19 and 26. We'll screen two films on racial justice in cool Smith Hall. Karen will bring the popcorn - bring a nonalcoholic beverage to share.
