Rocket Report

Vol. 3, No. 27, February 28, 2020
Words with Wilson
This week I am focusing on the 3rd-5th grade classes. When I was a classroom teacher, my love was teaching middle elementary grades. I love their always positive attitudes, and the excitement they bring to the classroom. Our 3rd-5th grade students work hard, and love their teachers and fellow classmates. I love spending lunch time with them. They love poetry, and they love to sing and dance. They sing out and participate fully at Mass. They bring such joy to our school.

There are several great things going on in our 3rd-5th grade classrooms and special areas:

  • In Mrs. Agresta’s Language Art Class, 5th Grade has been enjoying writing expository essays about a natural event that interests them.
  • In Mr. English’s Math class, 5th Grade has been evaluating expressions with mixed numbers and creating improper fractions. This includes real world problems like tripling the ingredients of a chocolate chip cookie recipe.
  • Mr. G’s 4th Grade class prepared a beautiful Ash Wednesday Mass for the school. They did an awesome job on their readings, and their singing was beautiful.
  • In Mrs. Payne's 4th Grade Science Class, the students have been exploring magnetism.
  • Mrs. McClurg’s 3rd grade students have been conducting biography research projects. Students are researching an individual who influenced our world in some way. They will end their research by creating a bottle buddy to represent the person they researched.
  • In Mrs. Elam’s 3rd grade art class, they are learning about Claude Monet and using oil pastels and Watercolor to paint a picture inspired by his “Japanese bridge”
  • In Mrs. Elam’s 5th grade music class, they are composing their own music and getting ready to perform them for each other on the xylophones.
  • In Mrs. Lecher’s 3rd Grade Spanish Class, they just finished a food unit. They made menus in Spanish, opened their own restaurant and served food while speaking in Spanish.
  • In Mrs. Lecher’s 4th Grade Spanish Class, they are learning Spanish names for different body parts. They just finished reading and acting out the story Me Duele.
  • 5th Grade Spanish just finished learning target structures for telling the time and opening and closing the door. They used these structures as well as those learned previously to write a six sentence story in Spanish.

We are blessed to have fantastic 3rd-5th grade teachers, and awesome special area teachers. I really appreciate the excitement they bring to the classroom. They plan creative and fun lessons, and really do a great job of connecting with their students. They are a great team!

Purse Bingo
Thank you to those of you who attended, purchased raffle tickets and/or volunteered at this year's Saint Roch PTO Designer Purse Bingo event. Special thanks to the teachers and staff who attended - and those who volunteered. Mr. English, Mrs. Fields, Mrs. Jordan and Mrs. Stack worked hard to ensure everyone was having a great time, and Mrs. Wilson and Mr. Rush did a tremendous job leading the bingo games. We are so blessed here at Saint Roch!

Now for the numbers...the evening was a huge success! We sold out quickly with over 200 people purchasing tickets for the event. We played ten rounds of bingo, ate, drank, and laughed with friends, gave away nearly $1000 over two 50/50 drawings + lots of great prize baskets, - and our very own 5th grade teacher, Mr. English, won the $5 designer purse raffle. The event raised over $8000 - all for the students of Saint Roch! Just in case you didn't hear us the first time - thank you!!! We'll let you know as soon as we have a date for next year's event...
