Rocket Report

Vol. 3, No. 21, January 17, 2020
Words with Wilson
We had another great week at St. Roch Catholic School. We held our Geography Bee and Spelling Bee this week. Our Speech Team is gearing up for their first competition. Quest for Excellence practices are in full swing, and our Theater Club continues to work hard to prepare their production of Peter Pan . Below you will see the great things that went on in our classrooms this past week:

  • The 8th great worked hard in Mrs. Feltman’s science class making 3D plant and animal cell models.
  • Second grade students in Ms. Leppert’s class worked on 3 digit addition using task cards.
  • In Kindergarten art class, Mrs. Fields taught the students how to paint Narwhals.
  • Mrs. McClurg’s third grade began a biography research project on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. using their chromebooks.
  • 1st Graders in Mrs. Border’s Class used the I pads to practice comprehension.
  • Chase Monroe won the Geography Bee for the second consecutive year.
  • Mr. G’s class and Mr. English’s class did a fantastic job leading our all school masses this week.
  • Miss Egan’s/Mrs. DeArmond’s 2nd grade class played Scoot and used task cards to learn about standard and expanded form.
It was a great week to be a Rocket.  Enjoy your weekend!

Children's Liturgy of the Word
Returning in January 2020!
With the completion of renovations to our rectory basement this month, we are excited to begin offering Children’s Liturgy of the Word again to children ages 3 years through 2nd grade during 10:30am Masses starting at the end of January! In order to pick this ministry up once again, we are in need of additional adults to lead the children participating. If you are interested in learning more about how you can volunteer and contribute, please contact Stephanie Newton at or call the parish office. We will have a short informational meeting to talk about this ministry and how to volunteer in the coming weeks. Materials and activities will be supplied! Thank you for considering your own participation and who might be a great partner to team with!
The next quarterly PTO meeting is January 22nd at 6:30pm

Rebel Report
Rebel Club

What is Rebel Club?
Rebel Club is a spring basketball team for young men currently in grades 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th. Rebel Club teams practice twice a week, and play most weekends. The team will stay together at a minimum up to SPRING BREAK.
Who can try out for Rebel Club?
Any boy in grades 5th-8th that currently is enrolled in any one of our South Deanery school feeder schools and any 8th grader that is planning on attending Roncalli High School.
How many are on each team?
We keep approximately 10 on each team.
Is there a cost for Rebel Club?
The cost for Rebel Club is $150. This cost will go to cover leagues, tournaments, uniforms, and gym rental if necessary. This money will also cover any cost incurred by our coaches. This is NOT a fundraiser or money maker for the basketball program. All money is used and allocated for specific purposes.
What is the time commitment for Rebel Club?
Starting with tryouts (January 26th), the team will practice twice a week at Roncalli. 5th and 6th graders will play in a league on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, and 7th and 8th graders will play in a league on Sunday afternoons. There will also be tournaments that we play in locally. Tournaments in the past have been at places like Shelbyville and Greenfield.
What if my son’s team is still playing in the CYO tournament?
Your son’s school team is the first priority. He can practice and or play with the Rebel Club whenever there is not a conflict, and then join the Rebel Club team full time once the CYO season is finished.
What if my son plays baseball or CYO volleyball?
We ask that if your son tries out for Rebel Club he is able to commit to it until Spring Break. At that point, most teams either disband or decide if they have enough to keep playing.

What if my son has a CYO tournament game during tryouts?
We believe we have scheduled the tryouts around all South Deanery school tournament games so everyone can make tryouts. If we have missed one, please let us know and we can make other arrangements.

Who would be coaching my son’s team?

5th Grade - Matt Dillion - 98 RHS Grad, former Rebel basketball player, tons of experience in youth coaching
6th Grade - Chad Ramsey - 16 RHS Grad, former Rebel basketball player, has experience coaching both CYO and Rebel Club
7th Grade - Chris Fey - 14 RHS Grade, former Rebel basketball player, current assistant on the Rebel freshmen team
8th Grade - John Hasty - 08 RHS Grad, former Rebel basketball player, current varsity assistant at RHS
All parents of current eighth grade students who are planning to attend Roncalli High School next year are invited to our annual Curriculum Meeting for 8th Grade Parents on Tuesday, February 4 at 7:00 PM in the RHS auditorium. This informative presentation consistently has received strong, positive reviews from parents. Please plan to join us!
