Rocking Your Virtual Team

NetSpeed Learning Solutions became an all-virtual company in 2017. After a slow evolution from having our whole team based in our Seattle office to team members dispersed around the country, this year we realized the time had come to move everyone home. Much to my surprise, I love my home-based office (and my short commute).

As the company's CEO, I strive to remember that virtual team members want to:

Feel included (not isolated)
Be connected (not separated)
Be "seen" (not invisible)
Feel appreciated (not taken for granted)
Make meaningful contributions (not waste their time)
Be part of a team (not simply work alone)
Focus on results (not meaningless activities)

As a virtual team leader, I know that if I want to rock my virtual team, I need to pay attention to four critical factors in our virtual environment: relationships, results, reliability, and recognition. If I want my team to love their work, I need to attend to our interpersonal communication and relationships. If I want my team to produce great results, I need to pay attention to how work gets assigned and delegated. If I want my team to be reliable and accountable, I need to make it possible for them to plan, track, and report their progress. If I want my team to feel good about their contributions, I need to regularly acknowledge and recognize their accomplishments.
