ART OF DISCOVERY SUCCESS
Thank you so very much to all the teachers, staff, and art docents who made the  Art of Discovery  program another wonderful experience of art and learning for the students (as well as the grown-ups!).  The seven original works of art lent out by the Junior League of Seattle, in conjunction with the Bellevue Art Museum, were a thought-provoking set, themed "Emotions."  We had fun and enlightening discussions, inquisitive students, interesting ideas, and some entertaining questions.

An extra big thanks to:   Julie Wulf and  Kerry Bauman for helping with coordinating and handling deliveries and pickups, as well as scheduling;  Diane Davenport for letting the art docents take over a big chunk of the library space and schedule; and all the  Teachers for signing up and bringing in their students in such a timely fashion.

Thanks to the art docents who did a fantastic job leading the sessions:  Kelly O'Brien, Swetha Neelam, Rajashri Bedekar, Gayle Elam, Jami Worsley, Kathryn Bruner, Angela Dangel-Flynn, Angie Ballas, Christine Welton, Tuhina Lal, Kavita Prakash, Sonoko Kambara, Meghan Moore, Dana Harder, Julie Dries, Chamu Kallem, Maya Shani, Sony Jobanputra, Julie Balkcum, and Laura Lucas.

And of course, thank you to the  Rockwell PTA and their generosity for making this awesome program possible.

ROCKWELL PTA KUDOS AND NEWS
  • THANK YOU to Kindergarten parent, Pam Teh for volunteering to be our PTA Webmaster next year (and she has already hit the ground running while training with our current webmaster Felice Nightengale)!
  • CHESS CLUB needs a new parent chair (or co-chairs) for the 2016/17 school year. Please help us keep this popular program - or it will not be available next year! Contact current chair: Vani Jain for information.
  • Rockwell's 5th Grade Promotion needs a chairperson ASAP. This event occurs on the last day of school and the committee is traditionally filled and led by 4th grade (or younger) parents...so that the 5th grade parents can enjoy their child's last day at Rockwell. All the directions are organized in a folder by last year's chairperson. Can you help? Email Jennifer Myrick
  • PTA SEEKS NOMINATING COMMITTEE to help us fill board and chairperson roles for 2016. Can you help? Contact the Rockwell PTA Presidents (Cari Scotkin & Ellie O'Rourke) if you can serve on our Nominating Committee!
  • AWARDS COMMITTEE FOR VOLUNTEER TEA which takes place on Tues, June 7th during the lunch hour. Please email Ami King for details!
  • Interested in chairing or co-chairing a program next year? For a list of all PTA roles and to think about how you can contribute to our school community, please check here
LWSD APRIL 2016  BOND MEASURE - INFORMATION
Lake Washington School district is growing rapidly. In fact, it has grown from the sixth largest district to the fourth largest district in the state since last year. The district has grown by over 3200 students in the last five years. That's an average of over 625 students per year for the last five years, which is equivalent to five large elementary schools. Growth is projected to continue, reaching over 30,000 students by 2020-21 and over 32,000 students by 2029-30.

To meet these growing needs for classroom space, the district's board of directors voted on January 25 to place a bond measure on the April 26, 2016 ballot. This measure, for $398 million in 20-year bonds, would fund the most immediate, high priority needs. The total tax rate will be maintained at the 2015 rate.

"Our district is at a critical point with regard to classroom space," noted Board President Nancy Bernard. "Moving to all-day kindergarten and reducing class sizes thanks to new state funding increases our need for more classroom space. At the same time our enrollment continues to grow."

The measure would build one new middle school and two new elementary schools and would rebuild and enlarge three schools (Juanita High School, Kirk and Mead Elementary Schools). It would also replace the Explorer Community School classrooms and refurbish the Old Redmond Schoolhouse for use by preschool classes.

For more information please see the full district press release here or the LWSD Bond site here.
DID YOU FORGET? PASS THE HAT DONATIONS ARE DOWN!
Many people donated online on "Back to Business Day" in August, but others must have forgotten as donations are down this year.

The suggested  $75 donation/per child helps the PTA to fund all the programs and classroom grants that the PTA provides our students, teachers, and school throughout the year. In addition, we pay for this newsletter, the PTA website, the family fun activities, and the art docent program.

If we don't make up the shortfall soon, we will need  to take this into account when budgeting for next year and possibly have to cut programs.

Take a look at our video to see many of the great things the PTA does for Rockwell.

Can't remember if  YOU donated to our Pass The Hat fundraiser yet? Simply log in to your account on the PTA website and check your account/orders to see if you have paid yet for this year, or shoot us an  email and we can check for you

Many employers will match your Pass The Hat donation - get your matching submitted today! Many will also match your volunteer hours too, so be sure to ask your employer if you volunteer here!

Last Week you got a flyer in your child's folder explaining our
Mid-Year Pass The Hat Fundraiser. If you are new to Rockwell, have not donated yet for the year, OR still need to get your corporate matching in, please do so ASAP!   You can donate online via the website or donate by check!

Thank you!
