Welcome to the October 2014 Rocky Mountain BEST Volunteer Newsletter.

WOW!  Our 2014 Blade Runner Hub Competition was made possible by over 100 volunteers and 32 school teams. This newsletter is all about celebrating the over 400 middle and high school students who designed and fabricated their unique robots and YOU who made it all possible.

Please forward this newsletter to others who might be interested in Rocky Mountain (RM) BEST.

2014 Talented School Teams
Teams Design & Fabricate Robot to Navigate Blade Runner Game Field

In our 5th year, 32 teams competed at Game Day at Auraria Event Center at Metropolitan State University of Denver campus. The
talented 400+ students designed and fabricated 32 unique robots and documented their design process in Project Engineering Notebooks. In addition, 11 of the 32 school teams participated in the optional BEST Award. The BEST Award requires, in addition to their robot and Project Engineering Notebook, a Marketing Presentation and Exhibits and Interviews describing their design process.

2013 Spotlight GraphicWOW!  Thanks once again to our Awesome Volunteers
We Would Not be Successful Without your Support!

Our generous volunteers came together in October to make the 2014 Blade Runner competition a SUCCESS: Practice Day (over 40 volunteers) and Game Day (over 85 volunteers)!  Below are some of the volunteer faces that made it all possible.

  Thank you for your support!

You're the BEST!

2014  Blade Runner  Game
Wind Turbine and Transportation based Game with NEW Cooperative Play

The Blade Runner Game is based on the challenges and opportunities surrounding the transportation of wind turbine components (towers, nacelles, hubs, and blades) on US transportation infrastructure.  It includes the on-site assembly of the complex structures.

The school teams must also be aware of environmental concerns and animal habitats. Prairie chickens play a big part of the environmental issues.

Adjacent teams may choose to cooperate in the robotic construction of a wind turbine and may even share components for increased cost efficiency.

Colorado Gives Day Contribution Opportunity
Tuesday 9 December - 24 Hours to Give Where You Live

Support Rocky Mountain BEST on Colorado Gives Day! On Tuesday 9 December 2014, Coloradans will come together again to raise millions of dollars for nonprofits like ours. Last year, a remarkable $20.9 million was distributed to Colorado nonprofits.

Presented by Community First Foundation and FirstBank, Colorado Gives Day asks you to give to your favorite charities through the website ColoradoGives.org, an online giving resource featuring every nonprofit participating in Colorado Gives Day.

  • 100 percent of your donation will come to us.
  • When you give online any time on December 9, the value of your donation will be increased by the FirstBank Incentive Fund.
  • Donate online any time during the 24 hour period of December 9 to "give where you live!"
  • Starting Nov. 1, donors can "pre-schedule" a one-time donation for December 9, Colorado Gives Day. Visit their FAQ page for details.
We hope you consider donating to Rocky Mountain BEST at ColoradoGives.org on Tuesday 9 December.

Looking for another EASY way to support Rocky Mountain BEST?

Everyone needs groceries and gas. Why not let 5% of the money you are already spending benefit Rocky Mountain BEST? It's really easy.

Purchase a $10 King Soopers gift card and continue to add money to your gift card before you use it to buy groceries or gas. King Soopers will donate 5% of EVERY gift card purchase -- including refills -- to Rocky Mountain BEST... all at no cost to you -- FOREVER!

Interested?  Contact Linda Scott at lscott@rockymountainbest.org or Lois Walton at lwalton@rockymountainbest.org to make arrangements to purchase a card.  Gift cards will also be available at the 2014 Volunteer Celebration Brunch on 2 November 2014.

Rocky Mountain BEST would not be successful without you!  We are looking forward to working with you again in 2015.

Sincerely,

Linda King
