June 2023 Newsletter

Welcome to June and welcome to the new luxury Sonoran Star Resort on Sandy Beach!

I hope you've been enjoying the beautiful weather we've been having lately. We've had a lot going on around town since my last newsletter, and the number of people visiting town has kept things lively at the new sales office and model. We are definitely becoming an important vacation destination, not only for Arizona, but for folks covering the USA, Mexico and beyond. Somehow, it always surprises me to find out how people from outside of the normal areas ended up visiting our little paradise by the Sea. The stories vary greatly, but one thing remains common: everyone says that they will be back.

Obviously, the big news is the kickoff of the new Sonoran Star Resort. This luxury resort will really break the mold and provide a resort the likes as this region has never seen. Check out our website www.sonoranstar.com over the coming days and weeks as it is updated with more and more information, photos, and details. Be sure to stop by to see our gorgeous model condo, tale a UTV ride up to see the location and views from tower #1, and chat with one of our reps. We’re here every day from 9-5, but if those hours don’t work for you, just let us know and we can work with your schedule.

Here's a map to the model condo. You might want to copy/past the link to your phone so that you can easily find us when you get to town. If written directions are more your thing, we're located on the road from Call 13 towards Sandy Beach. Dukes, Casago, the New Mexican are all our neighbors. You can't miss us.

I could talk about the Sonoran Star throughout this newsletter (and I will mention it once or twice…), but I know that you also want to hear about what’s happening here in Rocky Point. The 2023 version of Circus Mexicus with Roger Clyne and friends is coming right up and if you haven’t gotten tickets yet, you need to go online and do so. Every year there are more venues, more shows and it just keeps getting better and better. The month of June will be full of activities and fun and the weather should be nice so it’s a great time to visit.

Enjoy this beautiful month, come to Rocky Point if you can, and if you need anything don't hesitate to ask. Let me put my experience and expertise to work for you, and remember, as always, I've been here full-time for over 15 years and I am more than happy to help you with whatever you need, whether Sonoran Resorts related or not.

Just give me a call or send me an email any time and I will do my very best to help you. If I can't help you myself, I'm sure that I can point you in the right direction and help find you someone who can.

Sonoran Star Off to a Great Start

After a big opening weekend, we've been busy selling units in Building 1 at the Sonoran Star Resort. The festivities kicked off on Saturday, May 20th with a private owner and friends & family party and lottery. The event was a big success and everyone loved the condos and the resort.

Mayor Jorge Pivac Carrillo, who attended as a special guest, stressed that it is a project that will detonate the economy and boost tourism and investment to continue strengthening Puerto Peñasco as the best tourist destination in northwestern Mexico.

The mayor assured that the municipal government that he heads will continue to be a facilitator to strengthen investments and real estate in Puerto Peñasco.

We followed up the big day with sales opening to the public on Sunday, which was also a very busy day and allowed those not involved in Saturday’s event to tour our model condo and get in on presale prices and selection.

This past weekend was Memorial Day, so we held an open house in order to invite even more people to tour the condo and to take rides in our two UTV vehicles to see the location of the first building and the exact view from tower #1. We still have a few units for sale in building #1, so don't wait too long. Come see our model or give us a call to learn more.

Early investment in the Sonoran Star Resort comes with numerous benefits, including the chance to secure a prime condo at your preferred level and at a lower price point. As the resort continues to develop and grow, property values are very likely to increase, making early investment a wise financial decision. Additionally, early investors may have the opportunity to customize their units and choose from a variety of financing packages and pricing options. This allows buyers to tailor their investment to their specific needs and preferences.

Prospective buyers can take advantage of long-term developer financing as well. More details such as the resort layout, amenities, and floorplans at the Sonoran Star website: www.sonoranstar.com. The presales launch of the Sonoran Star Resort presents a unique opportunity for early investment in a highly anticipated new resort, with the potential for significant financial returns in the future through rental income and appreciation of the property value. Not to mention owning a condo at the very newest and best beachfront resort in all of Northwestern Mexico.

Puerto Peñasco Continues to Generate New and Large Investments

As the municipality of Puerto Peñasco grows, so do its investments. And with that growth comes more jobs, which is great news for people who have been out of work since the Covid crisis.

It's no secret that Puerto Peñasco has had some tough times during the crisis, but with the help of large-scale investors and the continued support of local businesses and unions, we're seeing a major recovery in our port and a revitalization of our community.

Along with the fact that we have one of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico, we are also seeing a lot of new construction projects. The number of new businesses and buildings being built is surprising, and it's happening on all levels. As Mayor Jorge Pivac says, "Nobody stops Peñasco!" And it's true: investments keep flowing into Puerto Peñasco.

One example is the Sonoran Star Resort project, which has already begun construction on five 20-story condominium towers, as well as amenities like a lazy river, 8 Jacuzzis on multiple levels, fire pits, heated and non-heated pools for families with children and for adults, a children's water park with multiple water slides and shaded areas around them, beach cabanas and palapas on a private beach, covered resort parking, restaurant, lobby bar, glass elevators—all located right next to the majestic Sea of Cortez and within walking distance to many shops, restaurants, and tourist attractions.

This project will be one of the most popular real estate developments ever built in northwestern Mexico—and it will surely boost tourism and our economy!

Potpourri!

Short Shorts of All Sorts!

Sometimes so much is going on in our little slice of paradise by the sea that we can't address the many short subjects with proper attention. To handle the hodgepodge of dangling subject matter, we invented the Potpourri Page. Here are a few "short shorts" to keep you up to date.

Celebrate Marine Day in a big way with the group La Concentración, who will be performing at this year's concert and dance. This is a chance to celebrate with your family and friends while enjoying the festivities. The purchase of your ticket includes access to carnival rides and attractions.

The event will take place on June 3 on Campeche street in El Mirador.

The Pirate Ships, King of the Sea and the Black Pearl are a fun attraction for visitors of all ages. Each cruise is an unforgettable adventure that lasts a little over two hours.

You will enjoy games from the beginning of the journey and you’ll enjoy sword fights. Receive free beer and margaritas for adults with the dinner option. Young people also have a free bar of non-alcoholic drinks with dinner option. Children under 2 are free. The trip also includes dancing and fireworks.

The area around the location of the new Sonoran Star Resort is already gaining new businesses and attracting buyers and investors who are ready to cash in on the many owners and renters who will frequent our new beachfront project. A high-end looking pharmacy popped up on the corner not long ago, and today I noticed this sign announcing an upcoming steak house across the street from the entrance to the new resort. Smart move...

As the weather warms up, the stingrays come out to play. If you are wading in the shallow waters of the sea, remember to shuffle your feet as you walk.

Rocky Point Tourism Exceeds Expectations over Memorial Day Weekend

A weekend of great tourist influx was recorded in Puerto Peñasco from May 26 to 28, receiving an estimated 38,000 American visitors who chose this tourist destination to celebrate Memorial Day here. There were also those who visited to enjoy local sports.

The beaches and streets of Puerto Peñasco were crowded from last Friday to Sunday with the arrival of tourists from Arizona and California. There were also more than 2,000 athletes and their families from Baja California, Sonora, and other states that participated in regional and binational sports tournaments in the various sports fields in town.

According to preliminary data from the Convention and Visitors Bureau, a hotel occupancy between 85% and 90% was reached in hotels, condominiums and rental houses during this weekend.

The Lukeville Arizona-Sonoyta border crossing extended the hours to cross for the holiday weekend in order to allow more people to arrive before closing. The extended hours was negotiated by Mayor Jorge Pivac after the hours were reduced during and since Covid. The extended hours will continue during holidays. The busy weekend reaffirms that Puerto Peñasco is the most important tourist destination in northwestern Mexico.

The Super Peso and a Historical Tour of Mexico’s Currency

A brief glance back over 70 years of exchange rate fluctuations reveals a pattern that's woven into the tapestry of Mexico’s peso

Mexico’s peso has had an assorted history against the US dollar. Periods of stability have been followed by periods of great turmoil —and resulting devaluations— followed by rallies and stabilization.

An irony —economists would say corollary— is that the only times the peso has gone through periods of appreciation against the dollar has been in the decades when it was allowed to float freely, with no exchange controls in place, few or no price controls in the domestic market, and no restrictions on withdrawing capital or profits.

From controlled exchange rates to free-floating currency

Over the last seven decades or so, different governments have applied different measures for managing the peso’s exchange rate, depending on their perception of the country’s needs at the time.

From 1954 to 1976, the Mexican peso was held at a fixed rate of 12.50 (old pesos) to the US dollar.

A devaluation in 1976 was followed by a long period of different exchange controls which included outright restrictions at times, multiple rates at others, and a system of ‘exchange rate bands’ that allowed a steady but gradual depreciation of the currency.

A continuing series of devaluations through the late 1970s and 1980s —some major, some controlled— culminated in an economic blowout in December 1994, when the country’s reserves became depleted following a year of capital flight, and that led to a free-floating exchange rate that has been maintained ever since, with the central bank only intervening in times of distress in markets.

Mexico’s peso from the late 1990s to 2010

After briefly reaching 11.50 to the dollar in the late 1990s, the peso had several years of ups and downs, gaining to less than 10 to the dollar just before the global economic crisis of 2008. Since that crisis originated in the US, its effect on Mexico was much greater than it was on other countries which have fewer (or smaller) trade and investment ties.

The currency’s value buckled in August of 2008, falling from 10 to more than 15 pesos per dollar in March of 2009, as investors sold Mexican stocks and bonds, often for cash to change back to dollars to meet other obligations.

The decade from 2010 to 2020

Mexico survived the 2008 crisis largely intact, and by October 2010 the peso recovered about half of its lost value, trading at around 12.50 to the dollar.

From 2011 to 2014, the currency stabilized and traded inside a range of 13 and 14 pesos to the dollar; but in late summer of 2014, the peso began to slide again, and in November of that year it broke the psychologically significant ‘20-to-1’ level.

The peso continued to weaken throughout 2015 and 2016 and, after briefly touching a new low of 21.50 in January 2017, the peso began a robust rally, and by September 2017 it was trading at around 17.60 on foreign exchange markets.

The currency then stabilized again and from 2018 to 2020 it traded in a range of 18 and 20 pesos to the US dollar.

Spring of 2020 through 2023

Soon after the World Health Organization declared Covid a pandemic on March 11, 2020, the Mexican peso began to experience a rapid decline in value against the US dollar—briefly touching 25 pesos by the end of March 2020.

However, in late spring the peso began to quickly recover its poise, and by November 2020 the currency stabilized again to trade in a range of between 19 and 20 pesos to the dollar—and remained remarkably stable in that range during the two difficult years that followed.

In 2023 the peso has continued to strengthen against the dollar, repeating a similar pattern it displayed between 2014 and 2017; in late February the currency touched a recent high of 17.95—a rally that got the term ‘Super Peso’ trending on social media in response to the currency’s strong performance in the first few months of the year.

What influences the value of Mexico’s peso

As a free-floating currency on world foreign exchange markets, the peso’s value fluctuates from day-to-day (and even intra-day), and although it’s the large, multi-million-dollar transactions by banks and big corporations that significantly influence the rate, macro-economic indicators including inflation, exports, oil prices, foreign currency remittances (mostly US dollars sent to Mexico by people from abroad), and international tourism all contribute the peso’s current value.

Understanding currency pairs

Most of the peso trading is done against the US dollar, and rates vis-à-vis other currencies such as the British pound, the Canadian dollar or the euro, are simply a combination of the two rates, or “currency pairs” as they are known in the trading world.

Thus, if the Canadian dollar rises relative to the US dollar, it would also be more expensive to buy Canadian dollars with pesos, unless the peso had also risen against the US dollar. There are no fixed rules about that. Sometimes the peso can appreciate while others depreciate against the US currency, other times they will move in the same direction. It can depend on many different things. Occasionally the reasons for the change are local, and other times they are global.

Predictions for the value Mexico’s peso

There are varying views on whether the peso is over- or under-valued at the present exchange rate. Different economists, including those at the Bank of Mexico, use different criteria to calculate what they believe a currency’s fair value ought to be, and therefore come up with different results and publish those estimates accordingly.

Economists are predicting that the peso will weaken again, with the median estimate for the peso to end this year around 20.80 to the dollar; but the simple truth of the matter is that no one can foretell its future value with any meaningful degree of precision—and a glance back at previous years’ estimates by the same groups of ‘experts’ confirms that.

Stingray Attacks Increase – 35 Reported Last Weekend

With the arrival of warm temperatures, there was a rebound in the number of stingray attacks on the beaches of Puerto Peñasco, so it is important to alert people wading in the ocean to use more care to avoid being victims of these aquatic animals, stated Carlos Bravo Martínez, the director of the Tourist Auxiliary Unit. He explained that only last weekend 35 stingray bites were treated on the beaches of this city, fortunately none were serious.

Bravo Martinez explained that of those stung, 10 were treated on Friday, 18 on Saturday and 7 on Sunday, all affecting tourists and local residents equally. He also commented that during the previous weekends, between 12 and 15 cases had been treated, showing that the warming weather and waters are making them more active.

He also explained that it is normal for the presence of stingrays to increase along the coast between May and August, therefore, given the expectation of thousands of tourists for the following weeks, sea goers should be alerted to the presence of the stingrays because the attacks generally occur due to ignorance regarding the danger they represent.

The main recommendation issued is that when people walk into the sea they drag their feet to scare away the little animals and avoid stepping on them. Director Bravo stated that none of the cases have been serious and all were resolved without severe effects, but the stings are very painful.

The director of the Tourist Auxiliary Unit reiterated that, historically, between May and August there is a higher incidence of stingrays, so it is necessary to take additional precautionary measures and to alert people about the risk of having contact with these marine animals.

Mexico Approved to Export Shrimp to USA

For the second consecutive year, the Federal Register of the United States of America confirms in the 2023 Annual Certification positive for Mexico that Mexican shrimp can continue to be exported to the US markets, thanks to the joint effort of the Government of Mexico and the fishing industry.

This certification reiterates the commitment of the Government of Mexico and the entire shrimp fishing sector of the country to the care and protection of sea turtles accomplished by carrying out their shrimp harvesting in a sustainable and responsible manner.

This certification directly benefits more than 107,000 fishermen, on which more than 430,000 members of Mexican families depend. In order to address this high priority issue the Government of Mexico published on June 9, 2021 an "Emerging Action Plan implemented by the Government of Mexico for the conservation of sea turtles", which to date is still in force.

Likewise, the Training and Awareness Plan for fishermen of Small Vessels was implemented with the aim of raising awareness about the care and protection of various marine species through the proper and efficient use of shrimp fishing gear. From 2021 to date, more than 9,000 people have been trained. Thanks to these trainings, Mexico continues to demonstrate that it complies with the measures to protect marine life and that they are comparable to those used in the US for the protection of turtles during crustacean captures.

As part of the process for the certification of Mexican shrimp in 2023, a verification visit was carried out by officials of the US Government, made up of Jared Milton of the Department of State, and Aaron Blake, of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The result was an overall rating of 94, which sufficed to maintain the certification of Mexican shrimp for this year

Rocky Point Tourist Police (TAU) Integral in Providing Services to Tourists and Residents over Memorial Day Weekend

From Friday, May 26 through Sunday, May 28, the Rocky Point Tourist Police agents stationed in the areas of beaches, dunes, and the Malecon  assisted hundreds of people who needed various types of support.

Mayor Jorge Pivac's order to station the agents in the busy tourist areas in order to offer assistance and care to all visitors was an integral part of providing an enjoyable and tragedy-free weekend on the beaches, sand dunes and other tourist areas, helping people avoid mishaps and tending for those who had one.

During the long weekend, the agents inspected 276 ice chests to be sure that no one brought glass containers on the beach – an important part of maintaining our beautiful and nationally certified clean beaches. They performed many pre-hospital services prior to transporting accident victims to local clinics for treatment of mostly minor injuries. There were 6 serious traumas in which the TAU ambulance transported people for treatment, luckily none life threatening. Stingray attacks were numerous and the highly trained TAU agents treated the painful wounds on the spot.

Another public service that the TAU agents provide is access to and assistance with an amphibious chair allowing disabled people to enjoy the beach and the ocean. Several disabled people were able to take advantage of this wonderful service over the weekend. The agents were also happy to reunite 12 lost children with their families.

On the beaches and sand dunes, the TAU agents helped people who were stuck in the sand and offered assistance to both minor and major injuries. They were the first responders on one car accident and a handful of ATV and UTV mishaps. They are even happy to give directions or recommendations. Talk about full-service public servants. Hats off to the TAU.

Rocky Point Red Cross Acquires its Second Ambulance

The Rocky Point Red Cross acquired a second late-model ambulance which went into service just in time for the busy Memorial Day weekend. The ambulance was received on May 22nd but needed to be reequipped to include all necessary equipment and supplies in our specific environment.

Miguel Guevara Azkar, president of the Board of Directors of the Red Cross announced the investment of $1,185,000 pesos which was made up from public donations, and contributions from OXXO corporation and various business entities in town.

He noted that when he took over the position as president exactly one year ago, he found that the Red Cross had mostly obsolete equipment, requiring higher maintenance costs, so it was decided to take action in order to acquire newer and more reliable ambulances and equipment. The first 2022 model ambulance was acquired in September of last year and has been an important part of the organizations effectiveness since that time. Addition of this second ambulance will make it possible to treat more injuries and attend more accidents with a shorter response time.

This latest addition to the local Red Cross is a 2023 model which should provide quality service with a minimum of maintenance costs for years to come.

Calafia Airlines offers adventure to and from Rocky Point

by SHANDRA KEESECKER-RIVERO

Rocky Point 360

The Calafia Airlines flight between Puerto Peñasco and Tijuana launched onto the local scene and into the skies at the end of April 2022, hitting the tarmac running and quickly meeting goals of average 70% passenger occupancy. While bringing Puerto Peñasco and Tijuana effortlessly accessible to each other via the just over 40-minute flight, an added welcome surprise has been the ease of expanding one’s wings…all the way to La Paz, without ever having to leave the plane! Indeed, the same Monday and Friday flight route of Calafia Airlines links Puerto Peñasco to Tijuana before then venturing to Loreto and La Paz in Baja California Sur, and vice versa, for a total travel time of about 4 hours!

“Last summer was a good season,” shared Fernando Antillon, General Director of the Mar de Cortez International Airport, “which confirmed for us and Calafia Airlines there is indeed a market.” This summer, Antillon notes, they once again anticipate a great season and points out there are no foreseen suspensions from now through the Fall. The real challenge, he explained, is in the winter and early Spring months, though further promotion aims to focus on sharing the wonders of the Pinacate Biosphere Reserve, sport fishing, and ecotours for any time of the year.

Another huge plus to the flight connection through Tijuana is also the convenience of the Cross Border Xpress, a pedestrian bridge linking travelers from the Tijuana International Airport to San Diego. “The great advantage,” exuded Antillon, “is that it’s so easy!” In 2022 alone, detailed the enthusiastic promoter of flights to Puerto Peñasco, the Tijuana International Airport had approximately 10 million people traveling through, with at least 3 million of these going over the Cross Border Xpress. This ease of travel links Puerto Peñasco not only readily to Tijuana, but also to southern California – not to mention other connecting flights from Tijuana and/or San Diego – and, let’s not forget …to Loreto and La Paz (without ever having to leave the plane!)

Ready for more adventure? The Calafia Airlines website is very user friendly in either Spanish or English (check language in upper right-hand corner – prices in pesos). Hop on to check flights from/to PPE (Puerto Peñasco’s call letters) – which include TIJ (Tijuana), LTO (Loreto), and LAP (La Paz). The Calafia Airlines flight departs PPE at 12:50 pm (Mondays) and 2:20 pm (Fridays), with arrivals coming in 12:25 pm (Mondays) and 1:55 pm (Fridays). That makes for an easy week-long or weekend excursion to and from our corner of the Sea of Cortez!

In addition, travelers can book flights directly by calling the Calafia Airlines call-center (011-52 from the US) 332 451 0505

Travel tips:

Plan to be at the PPE airport minimum 1 hour ahead of flight – and preferably two, stresses local Calafia Airlines Airport Chief Jenny Eunice Romero Elizondo.

IMPORTANT – Be on time as flights generally depart right at the scheduled hour. No exceptions – no waiting. Romero Elizondo adds, “doors close 30 minutes before indicated departure time, and unfortunately people have missed the flight in not being there early enough to board”

ID documents within country: passport, driver’s license, ID card (for example, INE card for Mexican citizens)

Luggage: All passengers can check one bag of up to 25 kilos (just over 50 lbs.) at no extra charge (Regular rate or 30 kilos Plus rate). IMPORTANT: Passengers allowed carry-on of up to 10 kilos (22 pounds) HOWEVER not much larger than a briefcase or backpack as overhead bins on the 50 passenger Embraer ERJ 145 are not as large as may be expected. (From a past personal experience, this meant I had to check the usual carry-on roller bag I had planned to bring in the cabin)

Safe travels!

Economy Ministry: Planned Investments of US $48B in Mexico this Year

There have been 117 investments announced in Mexico by private companies so far this year, worth a total of US $48 billion, the Economy Ministry (SE) said.

Around US $30 billion of this will be invested throughout 2023, and the rest will be injected into Mexico’s economy over the next three years.

Nearly US $30 billion will go to the manufacturing industry, US $15 billion to transport, US $2 billion to commerce and US $433 million to mining.

“This demonstrates Mexico’s competitive advantages: stability in its public finances and strength in its currency; social and political stability: a robust air, rail, sea and land infrastructure that connects us with the whole world; a young and skilled workforce; significant tax incentives; and the development of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises,” the SE said on Twitter.

By nationality, the United States leads the way in foreign investments in Mexico, accounting for more than US $30 billion of the total. Other countries in line behind the U.S. include, in order of rank, measured in U.S. dollars:

China, with US $3.7 billion

Argentina, with US $3.6 billion

Germany, with US $2.5 billion

Taiwan, with US $2 billion

Netherlands, with US $1.6 billion

Canada, with US $875 million

Belgium, with US $800 million

Mexico attracted US $18.6 billion of foreign direct investment (FDI) in the first quarter of 2023, a 4.1% drop from the same period of 2022. However, the SE noted that the figure for 2022 was unusually high due to the Televisa-Univisión merger and the restructuring of Aeroméxico.

Excluding these two transactions, FDI in the first quarter of 2022 would be nearly 50% lower.

“The behavior observed in the first quarter of 2023 represents the confidence of investors to maintain and expand their investments in the country,” the SE said this week.

The main driver for this strong performance is likely to be companies’ “nearshoring” operations from Asia to the Americas — a trend that has been boosted by the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

The trilateral free-trade agreement has particularly benefited Mexico’s automotive industry, which registered record FDI in the first quarter of 2023.

The History of The Sonoran Resorts

Looking back at 2001 when three prominent families, two Mexican and one American, formed the unique and strategic partnership known as Sonoran Resorts Partnership, a destiny of success was clear. The bi-cultural aspect of the partnership was going to be one of their biggest assets. They knew it—and proved it in their first 22 months upon completion of the Sonoran Spa Condominium Resort with 202 luxury units which were sold out by the time the last touches were laid upon the carefully planned common areas on Sandy Beach.

The partners gave credit for this feat to the advantages of a bi-cultural partnership that gave them the ability to move swiftly through bureaucratic and legal processes to obtain permits, documents and other details as required on both sides of the border. In addition, such a relationship provided a unique understanding of the potential buyer markets of two nations which vastly increased the odds for success in their sales efforts.

The Sonoran Sea, with 208 units, was the group’s second project, completed well within schedule in 2004, with most units sold prior to and during construction and the balance sold shortly thereafter. One of the objectives of the company was to learn from each project and figure out how to implement improvements into the next project without a significant increase in construction costs. Thus, the Sonoran Sea benefited from lessons learned during the Spa project and included numerous improvements, both subtle and obvious.

To insure continued growth, leadership and improvement to keep pace with the market boom that was spiraling skyward at an unrelenting pace in 2004, Sonoran Resorts Partners were able to lure into their ranks the young prodigy, Ingeniero Fernando X. Anaya, CEO of Marina Ixtapa, the mega tourist community development by industry giant, Situr. As Director General (CEO) of Sonoran Resorts Partners, Mr. Anaya implemented his aggressive and creative style of organization, management and financial acumen to reach landmark records in the launch, completion and sales of the next two projects: The Sonoran Sun and The Sonoran Sky.

He further improved the common areas at the Sun with a concave design that actually placed the center units even closer to the beach. He completed the project within budget in almost half the time it took to complete the former projects. The first tower of the Sun was sold out in a record three hours from the time it was placed on the market. Two months later, the second tower completely sold out in only four hours.

2007 marked the completion of the Group’s fourth resort, the 136 unit Sonoran Sky, designed by Anaya and built under his command in 15 months on 100 meters of beach front. His design emphasized even more attention to common areas creating a multi-level indoor-outdoor recreation facility consisting of three pools, an aqua bar, separate restaurant and bar, gym, kids play area, convention center and underground parking.

The first unit of the Sky was delivered in Nov of 2007 and set another record with sales of $32 million in condominium units in three hours, a phenomenal feat considering this was during the downward spiral of the U.S. economy at the beginning of the recession.

The Sonoran Resorts Sales is headed by Director of Sales, Jim Ringquist, who became part of the Sonoran Resorts family in 2010 and remains an integral part of the operations along with CEO Anaya.

Mr. Anaya’s financial management through the tough times enabled the resorts to be maintained at their highest level and remain attractive products for those investors capable of taking advantage of the market. Mr. Anaya takes pride in affirming that the Sonoran Resorts remain the strongest developer along the beach, with plans and the wherewithal to continue expanding their presence in Puerto Peñasco, the latest of which is the fabulous Sonoran Star

When asked what he would say to potential visitors, Mr. Anaya spoke with enthusiasm and without hesitation, “I will emphasize three points:

[1] “If you have never visited Rocky Point, please take the word of those who have, and know that you will receive service that you would not expect, from friendly people who appreciate you for visiting,

[2] “Of course, also think of the investment opportunity here, which could not be better, and

[3] “Our city is Safe, Nice and Beautiful for you to enjoy”

‘Mango Mágico’: How the Fruit Became Part of Mexican Cuisine

Can you guess what is a close botanical cousin to cashews and pistachios? Did you guess walnuts, perhaps almonds? You may be surprised to learn that the mango actually belongs to the same anacardiaceae (sumac) family of plants.

The mango shows up everywhere in Mexican cuisine: from mango salsa, mango tamales, mango empanadas, mango ceviche, mango margaritas, to mango sorbet… you’d be hard-pressed to find a Mexican staple that isn’t elevated by the mighty mango.

Believed to be native to South Asia, the cultivation of mangos can be traced back as early as 2000 B.C.E. in India. The mango tree, with its broad evergreen leaves and fragrant flowers, became a symbol of love and fertility in Indian mythology and was often referred to as the “king of fruits.”

Over time, the popularity of mangos spread across different regions of Asia. Indian traders introduced the fruit to Southeast Asia, including Burma (now Myanmar) and Thailand, where it thrived in the tropical climate. From there, it made its way to the Philippines and Malaysia, becoming an integral part of the local cultures and cuisines. You might be wondering, when does Mexico come into the picture?

Mangos arrived in Mexico during the 16th century, brought by the Spanish. It turns out the favorable climate allowed mango cultivation to thrive. Over time, Mexico became a leading producer and exporter of mangos, with diverse varieties that have become integral to Mexican cuisine.

In the United States, mangos were first introduced in Florida in the early 19th century, but it wasn’t until the mid-20th century that commercial cultivation took off.

Scientists developed techniques to improve the quality and yield of mango trees, resulting in new varieties with desirable traits, such as disease resistance and extended shelf life. These advancements have contributed to the global availability and popularity of the fruit throughout the year.

Mangos have been celebrated not only for their taste but also for their cultural significance. The fruit has inspired numerous works of art, literature, and songs in different cultures.

In India, mango festivals and competitions are held to showcase the best varieties, while in other countries, such as the Philippines, the mango is considered a national fruit. In fact, one of the most popular varieties of mango is called Manila, named after the capital of the Philippines. The Manila mango gained popularity for its unique flavor, smooth texture, and lack of fibers, making it a highly sought-after variety in both local and international markets.

Mango Habanero Salsa

Here's a very simple recipe for mango habanero salsa:

Ingredients:

3/4 lb ripe Manila mangos, peeled and chopped

5 habanero peppers, with their stems and seeds removed

1/2 cup apple cider vinegar

1/4 cup raw honey

Salt to taste

Water (as needed for desired consistency)

How to make it:

In a blender or food processor, combine the chopped mangos, habanero peppers, apple cider vinegar, salt and honey. Blend until smooth. If the mixture is too thick, add a little water gradually until you reach the desired consistency. Be cautious not to dilute the flavors too much.

Pour the mixture into a saucepan and bring it to a gentle boil over medium heat. Reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the mixture cool down.

If you’re looking for a milder sauce, add 2-3 peppers instead of 5. Once cooled, transfer the sauce to sterilized bottles or jars. Store in the refrigerator for up to a month.

Hotel Posada La Roca in Puerto Peñasco, Haunt of Gangster Al Capone

Legend says that the alcohol smuggler Al Capone had a hideout in Puerto Peñasco, the Marine Club, today Hotel Posada La Roca

Those were the years of the prohibition of alcoholic beverages in the United States, which lasted from 1920 to 1933 throughout its territory. Also, it was the time of the kings of the smuggling of the precious liquor, among them, Alphonse Gabriel Capone, better known as Al Capone.

There are several myths about his time in Mexico, perhaps one of the least known about him tells that he was a visitor to a casino hotel located in Puerto Peñasco, Sonora, called the Marine Club.

The story goes that thanks to the North American Prohibition Law, tourism for the inhabitants of that country flourished in Puerto Peñasco in the twenties of the last century; and two Americans named John Stone and Sofus Jhanssen came from Arizona in 1927 to open a casino hotel where they could sell alcohol to other Americans.

In fact, it is said that the Marine Club hotel was built with stones from the rock; it had a large games room and ten rooms with a long corridor, in a layout that made it easy to see who was going in and out of the building.

Also, at that time Stone and Jhanssen transported their clients in small planes that they piloted from Phoenix and Tucson; and tourists, in addition to drinking, could play and “fish”, although it seems that the latter was just a pretext because the boats transported barrels of alcohol brought from Guaymas that later crossed to Arizona.

Al Capone flees from US justice

Later, in 1928, Al Capone, considered Chicago’s public enemy number one, in one of his many escapes from American justice, fled to Sonora and hid in the Marine Club, right in room number 10, since it had two doors, in case he needed to escape.

It is said that the mobster, one of the most wanted in the FBI, visited the Marine Club several times until his capture in 1931, when he was imprisoned and sentenced to 11 years in prison in Alcatraz.

The Hotel Posada La Roca, currently

When Prohibition ended in 1933, John Stone left the Marine Club and is said to have set the hotel on fire before leaving to collect the insurance.

There are historical records of the fire and of the stone structure that survived, which was bought by Benjamín Bustamante and his wife, who fixed the place to transform it into the Hotel Peñasco.

Today the hotel remains standing, near the old port and the city boardwalk, and is considered the oldest accommodation in Puerto Peñasco. In 1998 it was remodeled and in 2000 it opened its doors again under the name of Hotel Posada La Roca.
