Join a young Hawaiian girl as she goes through different stages of life, learning about her culture and loving her island home. Hula, a traditional Hawaiian dance plays a central role in her journey with the question of “what did hula teach her?” coming up every couple pages.
I can’t express how gorgeous the illustrations in this picture book are. They. Are. SO. BEAUTIFUL. The landscapes, the creatures, the folklore, and the beauty of Hawaii are depicted with so much care and precision that it gives the reader a feeling of being at peace.
There is also a glossary page in the back with all the Hawaiian words used throughout and how to pronounce them. I learned some simple but lesser-known words like honu (turtle), ka‘ao (story), tūtū (grandparent), and many more. It makes for a fun learning opportunity.

Caught! Nabbing History’s Most Wanted by Georgia Bragg
Recommended by Ms. Cheryl, best for ages 9+
I discovered Georgia Bragg when I read How They Croaked: The Awful Ends of the Awfully Famous.Caught! is a fun, fast-paced, and humorous introduction to some fascinating people in history and what happened to them. Standouts for me were Caravaggio, Blackbeard, and Vincenzo Peruggia. The story of Peruggia was so bonkers—retelling it to my 1st grader, he couldn’t believe it. Grown-ups who like learning fascinating bits of history in a funny, conversational way will also enjoy this book.
Carl the Collector is a new animated show from PBS kids. It’s about Carl, a raccoon who loves to collect things. Carl has autism, and the show features both neurotypical and neurodiverse kids. The first episode has Carl trying to figure out how to organize his plushies. The reaction of him picturing his loveys being sad about being put in the basement is just spot-on for those who littles really love their fuzzy friends.
