To RPBG Members, Colleagues and Friends:

Why Support the NBOA’s

Summer Soirée?

Soirée season is upon us.

The Rogers Park Builders Group is one of eleven affiliate groups operating under our umbrella organization, the Neighborhood Building Owners Alliance ("NBOA")

The NBOA’s “big time Summer event” - the 12th Annual Summer Soirée - is only 2 weeks away, Thursday, August 1 - held on the campus of Loyola University Chicago Lakefront Campus, 5-9PM.

We have extended “Early Bird” tickets through Monday, July 22 - so if you know you are attending, we urge you to purchase your tickets now, and save a few bucks.

The Soirée is a spirited and fun summer party - we are expecting over 500 attendees, mostly retail estate professionals: the best networking opportunity of the year. Expect great beverages, exceptional food, games (who will be this years’ Bags champion?), a raffle, and an amazing time.

We will also welcome a few elected officials and others in government. Please take a few minutes to meet these folks, thank them for attending, and get to know them. Developing relationships with elected officials is an important part of what NBOA does.

The NBOA is grateful to the many sponsors of this event - including Diamond Level Sponsors, Xfinity Communities and AIA Apartment Investment Advisers; Platinum Sponsors, Consumer Credit, Lakeside Bank, Community Investment Corp. (CIC), Becovic Management Group, Sarnoff Property Tax and Kass Management Services.

The NBOA Is The Voice Of Neighborhood Housing

The NBOA actively advocates on behalf of neighborhood housing providers. We explain to elected officials and to the media that the bulk of multifamily housing in Chicago and Cook County is owned by small to mid-sized neighborhood owners who are closely tied to their properties. These folks hire and shop locally, and they care about their residents.

Neighborhood housing providers play a key role in community development, as we provide the housing where most Chicago and Cook County residents live.

NBOA continues to monitor and impact policies at the City, County and State levels. COVID was a critical time for us - as we dealt with rent strikes, eviction moratorium and government’s attempt to roll out emergency rental assistance.

NBOA Has Made A Difference For Housing Providers

Post-Covid, we remain busy, especially with as the new Mayoral administration and City Council introduce new policies such as Bring Chicago Home.

So far, our biggest accomplishment this year was opposing the ill-conceived Bring Chicago Home tax increase. NBOA explained to voters why we felt that a 3% transfer tax on transactions exceeding $1.5M would detrimentally impact deal volume and impede growth in the City. The NBOA’s opposition to that measure was crucial to its defeat, and our work was praised by the Chicago Tribune.

NBOA also works with industry partners to oppose rent control and we are actively monitoring the challenging property tax system. Towards that end, we are voicing our concern regarding a policy advanced and implemented by the current Assessor Fritz Kaegi to increase the level of assessment on mixed-use properties, known as 3-18s.

We have also done important work on the County's eviction process. By collaborating with key players, we have helped to address some of the inefficiencies in an otherwise dysfunctional and costly system. We point out that we, as housing providers, would be more willing to take chances renting to folks with blemishes in their rental histories if the system would work more efficiently.

RPBG Director Greg Viti and Member Alan Erickson present $1000 to Sullivan graduate Xanfernee Williams. RPBG worked with Friends of Roger C. Sullivan High School to offer financial awards to 16 deserving seniors to help them transition to college or vocation. Xanfernee received his award at an RPBG meeting one week early - as he was leaving the next day for a military career, joining the US Army. RPBG extends its best wishes to Xanfernee and his family and thank him for his upcoming service.
