Team Competitive Looks to Carry Momentum into Final Rounds of Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series

Team Competitive came into rounds 13 and 14 of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series with a statement to make.  The team's two pro-buggy's driven by Geoffrey Cooley and Dave Mason Jr., were converted from their primary Competitive Metals sponsorship to promote Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney.  The cars were wrapped in identical blue and white stars and stripes themes.  But more than a political statement the rookie drivers showed up to Las Vegas looking for a win.

The race held at Las Vegas Motor Speedway was appropriately titled the "Fight Under the Lights" with rounds 13 held on Friday night and Round 14 Saturday night.  The races were some of the most dramatic of the season.  Dave Mason Jr. took the team to the pole by qualifying with the fastest time on Friday.  After an eight car inversion Mason had to start 8th.  Cooley qualified 5th and ended up starting on the front row outside after the inversion.  From the Green Flag to the Checkered flag Cooley battled series veteran Cameron Steele for the win.  He ended up finishing on the podium in 2nd place.  Mason had little opportunity to pass on the one groove track and finished 6th.

On Saturday night Cooley again started 2nd and was quickly catching the leader.  It appeared he would have a second chance at the win.  But on lap 9 Cooley took contact and his car rolled over coming out of turn three.  Smoke and fire billowed from Cooley's car, but he was able to escape unharmed.  His car though was not able to continue.  Mason had moved up from his 8th place starting position to fifth.  Race officials announced there would be a green-white-checkered to finish out the race.  Knowing it was go-time Mason drove hard to fight for a podium finish.  Mason waited for a mistake and when series veteran Doug Fortin moved out of his line Mason drove in deep for the pass.  The two made contact, but Mason was able to continue and advance his position.  He crossed the line in second place but in a controversial call was black-flagged for the incident dropping him back to an official 14th place finish.

Despite the tough luck for both Mason and Cooley the two rookies continue to show the veterans of the series they are contenders for podiums and race wins.  In addition fans cheered for the two Romney / Ryan 2012 racecars provided by primary sponsor Competitive Metals.  Even 2008 Vice Presidential Candidate Sarah Palin, who was at the event, took notice of the cars and thanked the team for being so bold.  Team Competitive is excited to continue the Romney / Ryan 2012 Paint Scheme as the they seek strong finishes in Arizona for the final rounds of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series at Firebird Raceway on October 27th and 28th.
