Roosevelt Apartments in San Jose Breaking Ground this Summer
|
The Development team working on our Roosevelt Apartments project in San Jose recently closed its construction loan and plans to break ground this summer! First Community Housing will build 80 units of multifamily housing with a mix of studios, 1-BR, 2-BR, and 3-BR units. Twenty (20) of the units will be set aside as permanent supportive housing and 20 units will be designated as rapid rehousing units. The remaining units will be offered to individuals and families earning up to 50% of area median income.
The target population will be young adults who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, homeless families, large families (5+). If possible, we would also like to serve foster families and/or survivors of domestic abuse in our development. Following the Bill Wilson Center’s model, our goal is to have income qualified teachers, social service workers, and foster families living at Roosevelt Park Apartments who can serve as mentors for the young adults. Watch this space for a ground breaking ceremony later this year, and check out the news stories on this project below.

100cameras Photography Classes Graduation!
|
|
By Kristen Yamada
Program Manager
In June, the FCH Resident Services Team with additional support from the Asset Management Dept., hosted two graduation ceremonies and celebrations for participants of the 100cameras programs held at Betty Ann Gardens and Rincon de Los Esteros over the last 4 months. The ceremonies and celebrations were our way of thanking the 29 students that officially graduated in June for all their creativity and hard work throughout the program. This was also a great opportunity to remind participants to continue to tell their unique stories from their perspectives and allowed us to showcase their photographs to their households and the extended community. Above are some photos from the graduations. Two of the students were so kind to even draw us photos of Los Esteros!
100cameras is a nonprofit organization that works with youth around the world and teaches them how to process and tell their stories through photography in a way that impacts how they view themselves and their role in their community. The program provides a platform to sell their photographs and give 100% of the proceeds back to fund the most pressing needs in their communities, enabling them to see the impact of their contribution. Iamesi Village Receives LEED Platinum Certification
|
|
We're pleased to announce that Iamesi Village in San Jose has been awarded LEED Platinum certification. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), is the most widely used green building rating system in the world and an international symbol of excellence. Through design, construction and operations practices that improve environmental and human health, LEED-certified buildings are helping to make the world more sustainable.
First Community Housing CEO, Geoff Morgan notes, “We at First Community Housing are very proud to support our veterans, people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities, and other unhoused populations at Iamesi Village. These populations with environmental sensitivities will especially benefit from the low to non-toxic finishes and other environmentally friendly materials used in the building. A LEED Platinum certification means these homes will greatly enhance residents' overall health while they live at the property. We are so glad to be able to offer this benefit in combination with our other service partners on site.”
Iamesi Village achieved LEED Platinum certification for implementing practical and measurable strategies and solutions in areas including sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality. Green apartment buildings allow the residents to live more sustainably and provide the residents with healthier, more comfortable places to live. Sustainable building strategies make it possible for First Community Housing to provide good living situations for the residents while also reducing maintenance and utility costs and extending the life span of the building.
“Achieving LEED certification is more than just implementing sustainable practices. It represents a commitment to making the world a better place and influencing others to do better,” said Peter Templeton, president and CEO, USGBC. "Given the extraordinary importance of climate protection and the central role buildings play in that effort, First Community Housing is creating a path forward through their LEED certification.”
Certification is proof that buildings are going above and beyond to ensure the space is constructed and operated to the highest level of sustainability. More than 49,300 commercial and institutional projects are currently participating in LEED, comprising more than 2.6M square feet of construction space in all 50 states and more than 178 countries and territories.
