Children & Youth Ministries Weekly Update | |
The wind blew harder. The waves grew bigger. The water filled the boat.
But Jesus was asleep.
JESUS! WAKE UP! DON’T YOU CARE? WE’RE DROWNING.
Jesus stood up in the boat. The wind was still blowing. The waves were bigger than ever. The water was pouring into the boat quicker than the disciples could tip it out again…
The boat was sinking!
But then Jesus did something amazing.
He didn’t help his friends pour the water out of the boat.
He didn’t help them try to row back to land.
Jesus simply SPOKE.
But he didn’t speak to the disciples.
He spoke to the storm. To the wind. And to the waves.
QUIET! BE STILL!
Just three little words…and the storm stopped.
-From The Storm that Stopped by Alison Mitchell. Based on Mark 4:35-41.
However strong your wind or high your waves,
may the words of Jesus quiet the storms in your heart.
You can trust him.
You can believe in him,
and you aren’t in the boat alone.
-Tifny

New Youth Ministries Worship Leader
The Youth Team is very pleased to announce that we have a new staff member to introduce to you! Catherine Feeny has been hired to lead worship for Middle School and High School Youth Group (and retreats!). Here is a little information about Catherine:
Catherine was born in Pennsylvania, and attended college in Washington, DC before moving to the West Coast to pursue a career in music. After relocating to England and touring the UK and Europe as a singer songwriter, she moved to Portland with her husband Sebastian, where they found the Father inviting them into faith. Catherine loves leading worship and connecting with people of all ages.
A note from Catherine:
To Families: I am honored to be joining the staff at Columbia Presbyterian, and very excited to get to know all of you! Please feel free to introduce yourself when you see me around!

High School Confirmation Field Trip
Two Sundays ago our Confirmation Students were able to come together and attend Northwest Gospel Church for our Kairos field trip experience. Northwest Gospel in many ways is very different than CPC; larger congregation, younger demographic, more charismatic, and a multi-campus church. My goal for this field trip was to pick an experience where our students could ask questions and participate in a worship service that objectively is different. After the service the students and I were able to reflect on things that stood out to them, what they enjoyed, and what they were challenged by. All of our students had feedback that clearly showed they were noticing things, listening, and responding to the content we talked about in class. This was a fantastic way to end our experience with our students as we officially ended our Kairos class. I encourage you to ask one of our Kairos students about their experience and have a conversation.

The Sacrament of Communion
On Sunday, January 14th, several of our children and their families gathered with Pastor Matt Overton and Tifny Mathena to learn more about the history, meaning and purpose of Communion. After lunch, teaching, and discussion, the kids took the "secret" stairway from the Fellowship Hall to the Sanctuary and gathered around the Communion Table. Pastor Matt explained that we are all called to ministry in some form, and anyone can be called to Pastoral Ministry! Each child took turns wearing Pastor Matt’s stole. We finished with a prayer, and each child received a pin that they may chose to wear the first time they take Communion.

This Sunday is Communion Sunday
Children will be invited forward for the Time with Young Disciples and then proceed to Sunday School as normal. Our Sunday School teachers will escort the kids back to the Sanctuary before communion and they may sit with their families or with the Children and Youth staff. Children who have not yet received communion are welcomed and encouraged to come forward for a personal blessing.
We are excited to welcome the kids from the communion class to the table!

Book Fairy
In January the Book Fairy read The Storm that Stopped by Alison Mitchell, and each child received a sticker reminding them that Jesus Calms the Storm.

Work Camp Auction
Sunday, March 17
The Youth Work Camp Auction helps any high school student who would like to go on a week-long mission trip do so financially. Each year, congregation members generously donate experiences, trips, and items to be auctioned off in both silent and live auctions. Would you consider donating something to help raise money to help our high school youth build homes for families coming out of poverty in Mexico?
Please fill out a donation form and bring your item(s) to the church office right away.

2024 Summer Internships
Students that have completed 9th grade or higher are eligible to apply for a volunteer internship (approx. 20 hours/week) for Youth or Children’s Ministries. Students that have completed 10th grade or higher AND have served as a previous CPC Summer Intern or as a Core Leader in K2, Middle School Youth Group or High School Youth Group are eligible to apply for a paid internship (approx. 30 hours/week and various trips).
Interns in both Children’s and Youth Internships will spend each day as a large group sharing in devotionals, trainings and various activities. Interns will also have opportunities to spend time on projects specific to their area of ministry. The internship is 9 weeks. At this time, the internship will begin on Friday, June 14th and finish on Wednesday, August 14th. Beginning and ending dates may change depending on school calendars, but they will be set by the time of the interviews. When you come for your interviews, you will be provided with summer dates, and we will expect you to plan your summer dates according to that schedule.
In order to be considered for the internship, applications need to be completed by Sunday, March 3rd. We encourage you to discern through prayer and counsel if God is calling you to this opportunity of growth and service.
All interviews will be conducted in person with the Children and Youth Ministry Teams:
Sunday, March 10th (between 12:00-3:30pm)*
*Please let us know in your application if the above day does not work for you and we will try to accommodate another time.
