Children & Youth Ministries Weekly Update
The following is adapted from a recent writeup by MOPS.org. Mass emails often get lost in the inbox, but God didn’t let this one get buried. It soothed a little ache in my soul, as children get bigger and busier and I find myself decorating our traditional Monster Cookies by myself. No matter the age of your kids, maybe it will soothe your soul a little, too.

When Home is Hard to Find
There’s something about the fall season that makes us yearn for a homecoming. In October, we want to smell our favorite muffins baking in the oven and see cozy candles flicker to life when the sun sets early. We want to sit on the front porch in a rocking chair, tea in hand while a loved one pulls a soft blanket up around our shoulders as the temperature drops along with the leaves. Home reminds us who we are, and who loves us most.
But modern-day life doesn’t always lend to those actual homecomings, and some of us feel like circumstances make it impossible to build that type of homestead, or even return to a comforting fall rhythm for our own children. So, how do we satisfy our need for home when ours feels less than perfect?
The little years: You really want cute pictures in a pumpkin patch and to do leaf rubbings with your preschooler, but you never seem to have the energy to do anything that feels like a seasonal home tradition. It’s okay, because at this age, they need nurturing, presence and stability. They just need you.
The middle years: Club soccer, sleepovers and homework are getting in the way of your family dinners, and no one wants to make caramel apples with you. You can’t seem to find one night for a cozy homemade meal, and it’s okay if that’s not in the cards for you right now. Your kids need grounding, encouragement and love. They just need you.
The blended or shared custody families: Maybe this is your first season of adjusting to a new family rhythm. The truth of your belonging, and your identity as their parent is as true as it ever was, and no amount of suitcases or custody schedules can take that away from you. Remind yourself that proximity isn’t the only thing that keeps you close. If you are a parent who doesn’t have every member of your family under the same roof each night, you’re still able to give them a sense of home. Your children need truth told over their fears, assurance and consistency (always). They just need you.
So, go ahead and bake the muffins that make the house smell good, or take your toddlers to a pumpkin patch if you can squeeze it in, but remember that home isn’t the smell of cinnamon, or the perfect tradition, or even having all your family members home at one time. Home is the love and security that you give your children as their parent, and the identity you all have as beloved children of God, and nothing can change that.
