Restore

Restore us, O Lord God of hosts;
let your face shine, that we may be saved.
Psalm 80:19

Do you pay attention to the flight attendant when you fly? If so, you’ve heard the Oxygen Mask Rule:

“Should the cabin lose pressure, oxygen masks will drop from the overhead area. Please place the mask over your own mouth and nose before assisting others.”

Why do they say that? What could possibly be wrong with helping others first? Well, nothing, but it’s more difficult to take care of others if you’re not taking care of yourself.

For many of us, taking care of others is easier than taking care of ourselves. If you’re anything like me, after so many days, weeks or months of taking care of others, I get crabby. Actually, I get angry. When that happens, no one is being cared for. Now, it’s my nature to take care of others. It’s what I do. It’s not other people’s fault. I simply don’t take care of myself.

Today’s scripture reminds us to repair, reinstate, or restore our own lives with God’s help. It’s what you’re doing right now by reading this devotion. During this busy season of Advent, you might find that you need more. Spend time in nature, meditate in silence or with music, read a good book, pray, worship, or clean your closet. You know what you need. If you don’t know, ask God.

Reflection
How will you take care of yourself today and in the busy weeks to come? Do you need to add self-care to your calendar?

Prayer
The God of all grace, who has called you to eternal glory in Christ, will restore, support, strengthen, and establish you. To God be the power forever and ever. Amen.    1 Peter 5:10b-11
