The April LHH hike couldn't have been better! The Conservation Department, assisted by professional environmental scientist, Amy Nelson, surprised hikers with a fascinating presentation on vernal pools. In case you weren't there or want to learn more, check out the Vernal Pool Association and Of Pools and People!

Sorry, Gone Fishin': Trout Stocked in Haverhill

MassWildlife has stocked Haverhill waters!

  • Little River - brown Trout
  • Lake Saltonstall (Plug's Pond) - rainbow & brown trout
  • Lake Pentucket (Round Pond) - rainbow & brown trout
  • Millvale Reservoir - rainbow & brown trout

"This year’s fish are bigger and better than ever. While the quantity of stocked trout (measured in total pounds) has remained about the same for the last decade, MassWildlife has been steadily producing larger trout by adjusting hatchery growing techniques. Just ten years ago, less than 60% of stocked trout were over 12 inches—now, over 80% measure over a foot!"

Our first Invasive Species ID & Removal Workshop

Thank you to all who joined us at our first workshop for invasive plant ID and removal! We learned why invasive species are a threat to us and our ecosystems, and how to identify and dispose of them, focusing on several species that are common at Riverside Park, including burning bush, honeysuckle, Japanese knotweed, and Japanese barberry. After some removing a section of these species, volunteers also planted a few native species in their place, including arrowwood viburnum, elderberry, spice bush, and bayberry!

And a special thanks to Andover's Conservation Land Manager, Michael Murray for helping us make this workshop possible!

Be on the lookout for our next one!

Plant Paint Cross-Pollinate: The Butterfly Migration Begins!

Plant Paint Cross-Pollinate’ (PPCP) is a public art mural project led by artist Jenn Houle that cultivates ‘botanical belonging’, begins conversations about decolonizing public and private land, and restores ecosystem health with native plants. Through community art and nature workshops, PPCP inspires a cultural shift from echoes of colonization, lawns & imported plants, towards restorative land use: interspecies habitat for seasonal cycles in a shifting climate.

The Butterfly murals will appear at various locations across the City in May.

Take a Boating Safety Course

The Boat Massachusetts course is now mandatory for anyone who wishes to operate a motorboat on Massachusetts waterways. The course is available in two formats: a full in-person format that runs approximately 10-12 hours in length, generally over the course of several days, or a fully online education course. All full in-person classes are free of charge. There is an associated fee for the online program.

Classes are for adults and youth 12 years of age and older. Family participation is encouraged and has proven to be very rewarding. All graduates in the 12 through 15 year-old age group will be issued a safety certificate allowing them to operate a motorboat without adult supervision, as required by state law.
