Summer Explorations Camps
Wow! We are so grateful that you all have missed summer camps as much as we did… While we've fill a majority of sessions very quickly, there is still some room in great camps, and we will update our website as fast as possible in the event of spots opening up due to cancellations. We look forward to seeing you on campus this summer

Environmental Science and Sustainability Center
In conjunction with World Water Day, we unveiled the first exhibit within the brand new 30,000 square foot Environmental Science and Sustainability Center – Our Water Story. In partnership with Greenville Water, this large exhibit is an immersive, multi-level experience that visualizes the process of the water cycle through the local Greenville Watershed by highlighting all the different ways water benefits our lives and how we can better protect this vital resource.
|
|
We have been working for almost two years with Greenville Water to develop this unique, hands-on exhibit which aims to teach children – and adults – about the human interface with water. We give special thanks to Greenville Water for their early support and commitment to making Our Water Story a reality and cannot wait to share it with you this summer when the building officially opens.

Several weeks ago, the Roper Mountain Science Center Association kicked-off the Doing Big Things on a Little Mountain campaign, a $4.1 million endeavor to raise funds to make Roper Mountain unlike any other facility in South Carolina and our larger region. It supports unique, customized exhibits, new public programs with expanded operating hours, seasonal and traveling exhibits, and keeping the displays and programs up-to-date and refurbished. We’ve already raised $2.5 million during the pre-campaign phase, which has provided funding for major exhibits in the building, including the Roper Mountain Orientation gallery, Our Water Story and the Sustainable Future gallery.

Now is a great time to start preparing your garden for pollinators. Check out our latest video about cleaning up and preparing for spring blooms.

Earlier in March in our Marine Lab Touch Tank, one of our female yellow spotted stingrays gave birth to two babies, called pups. Babies are born live and will immediately fend for themselves, starting to eat after only a few days old. In the wild, these stingrays are found in shallow water in the Gulf of Mexico, as well as the Atlantic Ocean, from North Carolina down to Florida and into the Caribbean.

Our Virtual Field Trip teacher recently spoke to a group of international educators about how Roper Mountain uses pre- and post-materials to support student’s interest and understanding of the virtual content while also showcasing one of Roper Mountain’s exclusive programs.

…that Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds migrate back to South Carolina in the spring all the way from Mexico and Central America? Adult males arrive first to establish a territory. They can be identified from the females by their ruby red throat. Young males do not have a ruby throat and can be confused for a female. Some of the first males to arrive feed on tree sap holes left behind by the Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker. These smallest of birds are just around 3-4 inches long, measuring from bill tip to tail tip and only weigh around 5-7 grams – about the weight of a nickel.
|
|
The females build a tiny nest in a tree to lay 2 white eggs, each about a half inch long. Nesting materials include spider webs and lichens. Besides a tree to nest in, these hummingbirds need nectar plants to feed on. Hummingbirds are attracted to bright tubular flowers, which they drink nectar using their long tongues. Hummingbirds are quite acrobatic, being able to hover, fly backwards and even upside down. When hovering, the wings trace a figure eight and the body is upright. In normal flights, hummingbirds average around 60 wing beats per second.
|
|
Hummingbird feeders are the best way to attract hummingbirds to your yard. The mixture must always be four parts boiled water to one-part sugar, using only granulated white cane sugar. Feeders should also be cleaned and changed every 3-4 days. Get your feeders ready, the “hummers” are coming!

2021 BMW Charity Pro-Am
Presented by SYNEXX Corporation
Ticket sales to the golf tournament are now available and can be purchased to support Roper Mountain. If attending the tournament at Thornblade or The Cliffs Valley doesn’t suit your schedule, consider purchasing Birdies For Charity and designating Roper Mountain as your charity of choice! This fun option continues to raise bonus dollars by enabling individual donors to make a one-time flat donation or pledge one cent or more per birdie during the tournament.

Give Back To Roper Mountain:
Even with hallways and learning labs temporarily emptied of our students and visitors, we are continuing to do all we can to keep students, visitors and staff of Roper Mountain safe and connected. There is no question that this year will provide unique opportunities for our community to connect in new ways while meeting the challenges of the way things are in the world now. School lessons and public programs are being re-tooled to be delivered online; lessons are being created to help establish state standards in environmental science and sustainability; animals throughout our facility are being cared for daily; and our staff are collaborating in exciting new ways. A donation from you will help move our mission forward and lay the foundation for future success.
