MOUNTAIN HIGHLIGHT:
SYMMES HALL OF SCIENCE
|
|
The 2021 STEM Education Month (March 14 – April 11) is a statewide event inviting STEM stakeholders – students K-12, higher education, out of school learning, business/industry, and government – to celebrate, explore and discover why a quality STEM education is vital to the future of South Carolina.
Here at Roper Mountain, we will be working alongside Greenville County Schools Career Education and our industry partners to promote STEM careers to middle school students across the state and provide challenges that teachers can use to spark interest in these careers. We look forward to this opportunity to help develop programming for this amazing month of STEM education! Keep an eye out on our social media for updates. For more information about STEM education month, visit the website.

Our Science on Wheels program has teamed up with our Virtual Field Trip department to create “Virtual Science on Wheels” options. While many of our Science on Wheels outreach programs are still available for in person visits (with appropriate COVID-19 precautions) to sites that allow it, we are also making some of these programs available virtually, in the Upstate and beyond. Check here for information about these programs and how to book one.

…that our new Environmental Science and Sustainability building will feature a Nature Exchange? Developed by Science North, the Nature Exchange is a site where visitors can bring in ethically collected nature items and trade them for other natural items we house in our collection. Trading or donating nature items is based on points. Nature Exchange will encourage people to explore nature and actively observe, collect, study and share the natural world around them.
|
|
Some of our staff just recently went through training, offered by Science North, in order to help collectors learn more about their exchanged items, which include rocks and minerals, fossils, insects, shells, plants and other natural items. The Nature Exchange will encourage responsible and ethical collecting, with only certain nature items accepted. Most visitors will trade rocks, fossils, dead insects, shells, shark teeth, pine cones, etc. Nature Exchange will also accept information in the form of journal reports and photographs.
We can’t wait to share the Nature Exchange exhibit and our other new exhibits with you!

Give Back To Roper Mountain:
Even with hallways and learning labs temporarily emptied of our students and visitors, we are continuing to do all we can to keep students, visitors and staff of Roper Mountain safe and connected. There is no question that this year will provide unique opportunities for our community to connect in new ways while meeting the challenges of the way things are in the world now. School lessons and public programs are being re-tooled to be delivered online; lessons are being created to help establish state standards in environmental science and sustainability; animals throughout our facility are being cared for daily; and our staff are collaborating in exciting new ways. A donation from you will help move our mission forward and lay the foundation for future success.
