MOUNTAIN HIGHLIGHT:
ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE
AND SUSTAINABILITY CENTER
Our new Environmental and Sustainability Center is now open! Within the first steps of the facility is the Orientation Center, which encourages visitors to enjoy, explore, understand, and conserve the resources of our Upstate. As visitors enter this Orientation area – presented by Michelin – they can view a digital interactive map of the Upstate featuring natural areas in Greenville County and the Upstate, and even a history of Roper Mountain.
The Habitats of Roper Mountain exhibit features flora and fauna of the Piedmont area. Before visitors explore our nature trails, they can discover the common plants and animals that live in different habitats along Roper Mountain. Afterwards, visitors can explore the butterfly garden, the pond, and into the oak and pine forest.
Our Water Story exhibit – presented by Greenville Water and ReWa – takes visitors on a journey through the Table Rock Watershed property in our nearby Blue Ridge Mountains. Beginning at the top of a waterfall, visitors walk down a light projected stream stairway, ending up at a reservoir filled fish tank. Maps, models, and kiosks will feature the rich biodiversity of our mountains.
To encourage visitors to conserve our natural resources, the Sustainable Future exhibit – presented by Fluor – will feature interactive stations that highlight how decisions regarding energy, food, water, and waste can impact our environment now and in the future. Even the transforming of our waste water into renewable resources will be presented through an exhibit provided by ReWa.
We are now open for Summer Adventure, so come visit and learn more about the special natural areas and resources of our Upstate.

…that cicadas are the loudest of all insect-produced sounds in the woods here at Roper Mountain during summer? The loud sounds are the courtship calls of males, produced by the large, hollow abdomen muscles that vibrate.
Our most common cicadas are the Annual Cicadas. Despite their annual appearances, these cicadas probably take multiple years to develop underground. Their annual reappearance is presumably due to overlapping generations. Adults feed on the watery sap from the trees and the females lay their eggs in a slit in the bark. The nymphs that hatch then drop and bury in the ground, feeding on sap from tree roots as they develop underground.
Another type of cicada – the Periodical Cicadas – emerge all at one time in predictable intervals of 13-17 years. This summer, cicadas known as Brood X will emerge by the millions in certain areas after being underground for the last 17 years. After digging out, they crawl up and molt into their adult form, which are commonly found. Adults only live for four to six weeks.
As you visit us this summer, listen for the loud sounds of the cicadas in our woods or from one of our insect and animal sound displays.

Ticket sales to the golf tournament are still available and can be purchased to support Roper Mountain. If attending the tournament at Thornblade or The Cliffs Valley doesn’t suit your schedule, consider purchasing Birdies For Charity and designating Roper Mountain as your charity of choice! This fun option raises bonus dollars by enabling individual donors to make a one-time flat donation or pledge one cent or more per birdie during the tournament.
