The Roper Mountain Science Center Association hosted their first annual Pi Day Party on March 14, 2023. The fundraising event showcased hands-on demonstrations from Roper Mountain staff and special programming, including an electrifying science stage show from Roper Mountain’s very own, Joe Blizzard. With almost 200 people in attendance there was plenty of fun, learning, and pi(e) for everyone.

This event would not be possible without the many event sponsors and donors, including - Genesis Digital Assets, AFL, Studio Displays, HRP Associates, Inc., GE Vernova, Ethox Chemicals, Marett LLC, Millennium Private Wealth, ScanSource, Duke Energy Corporation, Verifiable Results, LLC, SPINX, Promethean, Global Lending Services LLC, Thompson Turner, DC BLOX, Carroll Daniel Construction, Colliers, Imagine Learning, King Kozlarek Law, UDR, Aline Capital, Primrose School of Simpsonville at Five Forks, Five Oaks Academy, Upstate SC Alliance, and Cindy Crick Law.
The Association also partnered with GCS Food and Nutrition Services, Liquid Catering, Event Rentals, Jack Robert Photography and PicturePro Photo Booth to help make this event happen. They would like to also give many thanks to the entire staff of RMSC for pouring their heart and souls into this event, including Executive Director, Michael Weeks and Development Specialist, Phyllis Henderson, and to Greenville County Schools for all of their support.

In December, the Hooper Planetarium upgraded the projector system and moved from a light to a laser system. This will help ensure longevity of the projectors, and also provides a more clear, crisp image on the planetarium. With this upgrade, the planetarium was able to secure some new films to feature during the public Friday Starry Nights events.
One film is “Stars of the Pharaohs.” During this film, you will travel to ancient Egypt to discover the different ways the Egyptians used science. Some of these ways include telling time, making a calendar, and aligning buildings. Additionally, you will learn about the connection the ancient Egyptians had with the stars and various astronomical phenomena, and visit some of the most spectacular tombs and temples of the ancient world!
This film will be shown at the 7:30 slot for Friday Starry Nights, and will run April 14-May 26. It is likely this show will sell out so grab your tickets soon! Be on the lookout for other new shows premiering later in the year!

Do you know that frogs are disappearing and are the most threatened group of animals? Thirty percent of frogs worldwide are in danger of extinction! Over 200 species of frogs have become extinct since 1970. Frogs face many threats including: habitat loss, invasive species, pesticides, climate change, infectious diseases, over harvesting, pollution, etc. They are fragile to many of these threats due to their highly permeable thin skin, which can absorb oxygen and water, as well as chemicals and other harmful things from the environment.
Frogs are important for insect control, medicine research, food for other animals, and as indicators of the environment. Healthy frog populations indicate healthy wetlands.
You can help by not using pesticides, don’t eat frog legs, don’t purchase wild-caught frogs, don’t pollute, and support the Save the Frogs organization (savethefrogs.com). I myself am part of a citizen- scientist group called FrogWatch where we monitor frog calls at night at locations to survey the different species of frog populations.
Find out other ways to save animals and conserve our environment at our Earth Day event on April 20, during our Afternoon Explorations at Roper Mountain.

Special thanks to our partners Greenville Water and ReWa for helping us celebrate World Water Day during Afternoon Explorations on March 16th.
Representatives from both agencies were on hand to engage visitors in hands-on activities to demonstrate the importance of water in our community. Greenville Water and ReWa are sponsors of the Our Water Story exhibit in the Environmental Science Building, an immersive experience that visualizes the process of the water cycle and fosters stewardship of our most precious natural resource, water.

Thank you, Greenville Water and ReWa for helping us fulfill our mission to ignite the natural curiosity of all learners to explore and shape our world!
