This week we talked with Jan Treinin, Activities Director at Rosa Coplon Living Center. Here's a few facts about our activities department and the important role it plays in resident life.
What is the role of the activities department?
Our department ensures that residents are provided with an on-going program of leisure-time activities. We try to design activities to meet the interests of every resident. Individual physical, mental and psychosocial well-being are taken into consideration when planning these programs.
What are your responsibilities?
With the team's assistance, I plan daily activities, keeping in mind the interests of every resident on each nursing unit. I complete quarterly progress notes for each resident based on their level of participation and interest in the activities scheduled, and make changes to resident care plans as needed.
Who is on your team, and what do they do?
Activities Assistants include Charlene Sloan, Roksana Rafique, and Carol Darrow. Charlene and Roksana both plan and conduct small group and individual leisure time activities for residents. Carol coordinates window and virtual visits with family members. Ann Marie Roach is our fill-in Activities Assistant and resident photographer! She assists with planning the daily activities holiday programming.
What are some fun facts about you?
I am originally from Syracuse, New York and came to Buffalo to attend Buffalo State College. I received my BS in Psychology of Aging and also earned a Gerontology Certificate from Canisius College. I have worked at Weinberg Campus since 1995 and hope to be here until retirement! When I'm not planning activities for residents, I enjoy spending time with my two cats, Salem and Sylvester, taking day trips with friends, gardening and cooking.
What should family/friends know about the activities department?
It is a privilege and an honor to be part of our residents' lives. While many of our staff are missing their own loved ones during the pandemic, our Rosa Coplon residents - your loved ones - often fill this void. We truly are “family” to one another. We can't wait for the day we can open to family and friends once again.
