Rosacea1Rosacea Awareness Month
Rosacea is a common skin condition that causes acne-like pimples, redness, swelling, and visible small blood vessels on the face. Although rosacea is so common, it's not always well known. This chronic skin condition typically emerges in individuals after the age of 30 and often goes through cycles of flare-ups and remission.

Signs and Symptoms of Rosacea:
  • Facial redness
  • Swollen red bumps
  • Eye problems- About half of the people who have rosacea also experience eye dryness, irritation and swollen, reddened eyelids.
  • Enlarged nose- Rarely, rosacea can thicken the skin on the nose, causing the nose to appear bulbous.
Managing Rosacea:

Sun protection: This is essential 365 days a year. Sunlight is the leading cause of rosacea flare-ups.
  • Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher every day. If sunscreen irritates your skin, try one that contains niacinamide (vitamin B3) to help calm irritated skin, like EltaMD UV Clear.
  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat when outdoors during the day.
  • Seek shade.
  • Avoid the midday sun.

Common Triggers: Even when you treat the redness, triggers can make your face red. You can prevent this by learning what triggers your rosacea and making some changes.
  • Sunlight
  • Stress
  • Heat
  • Alcohol, especially red wine
  • Spicy foods
  • Some skin and hair care products
  • Some makeup
  • Wind and cold
  • Some medicines
  • Exercise
Skin Care: Your skin care products and even the way you wash your face may be contributing to the redness. Anyone who has rosacea needs a gentle skin care routine. Rosacea friendly skin care involves:
  1. Finding a mild cleanser to wash your face like Avene Antirougeurs Dermo Cleansing Milk.
  2. Using only your fingertips to gently apply the cleanser to your face.
  3. Rinsing with lukewarm or cool water.
  4. Gently patting your face dry with a soft, clean towel.

You want to skip the washcloth, purifying toner, astringent, and scented soap on skin with rosacea. These can increase redness.

Cosmetic Treatments: For people who have a constantly red face or visible blood vessels, a Chemical Peel or light-based treatment such as IPL Photofacial, can be effective. Some patients see complete clearing of their redness. This clearing can last for years.

CO2CO2 Laser Resurfacing
CO2 Fractional Laser Resurfacing removes layers of skin tissue in a fractionated method allowing the natural healing abilities of the body to stimulate collagen and elastin. This process improves the tone, texture and tightness of the skin, by smoothing acne scars, removing sun damage, shrinking pores, reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles, while improving the overall tightness of the skin. While this laser is the most invasive laser skin resurfacing treatment, this also provides the most comprehensive and drastic results.

What does the CO2 treat?
  • Moderate lines and wrinkles
  • Skin laxity and sagging
  • Acne scars
  • Discoloration, even melasma
  • Skin texture issues
  • Collagen production
  • Large pores
  • Dull skin
  • Hoods over the eyes
How Does It Work?

Using this advanced laser technology, CO2 laser precisely removes outer layers of damaged skin to reveal the underlying skin which is softer, smoother, and younger looking. The CO2 laser allows Dr. Karen Nern and Dr. Drew Taylor to remove layers of skin tissue in a fractionated method (columns of skin are removed, leaving the skin surrounding each column intact to aid in healing) to help reduce "age-spots" (also called sun freckles, liver spots, and lentigines), lines, wrinkles, scarring, uneven coloration, skin laxity, textural irregularities, dull tone, and a thinned collagen layer of the face, neck, and chest.

Benefits Of CO2 Laser Resurfacing

By removing the damaged skin layer by layer, CO2 treatment is able to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles, "turning back the clock" on your complexion and revealing the more youthful looking skin that lies underneath. Results that are expected are a very significant and noticeable reduction in the components of sun damaged skin such as "age-spots", moderate lines, wrinkles, scarring, uneven coloration, skin laxity, textural irregularities, dull tone, and a thinned collagen layer. The skin will continue to improve for a period of 6 months following the procedure provided proper skincare is used and sun exposure is minimized. Sometimes the results are not significant until the 6th and even the 9th month, depending on the person's age and their aftercare routine.
Am I a candidate?

As we age, our skin succumbs to the effects of sun, gravity, and even our unique facial movements, to create lines and wrinkles that make us look older than we feel. A good candidate for CO2 laser skin resurfacing is typically an individual who has developed significant facial lines and wrinkling. A candidate may also have facial scars or uneven pigmentation they wish to correct. The best way to find out if you are a candidate for a CO2 laser skin resurfacing treatment is to have a Cosmetic Consultation with our dermatologist.

What can I expect during the procedure?

CO2 is an in-office procedure that requires pre and post-treatment medications to ensure proper healing and comfort during the procedure. Discomfort varies on the depth of the treatment. For your comfort during the treatment, we apply a topical anesthetic or inject local anesthetic and prescribe sedative medications to reduce procedure discomfort, therefore you will need to have somebody drive you home after your treatment. We also offer nitrous oxide to combat pain and anxiety, with a mixture of 50% nitrous gas and 50% oxygen. After the treatment most patients describe the post-procedure feeling as a bad sunburn for about 12 hours to 2 days.
