Saturday, May 18: 11-1pm - Lunch and discussion on chapters 1-3 at FBC on Wilmington Street

Saturday, June 1: 11-1pm - Lunch and discussion on chapters 4-6 at FBC on Salisbury Street

On Saturday, May 18, & Saturday, June 1, our congregation will be joining with First Baptist on Wilmington Street to share in lunch and discussion. Together we will be reading Howard Thurman's book, The Search for Common Ground . In this book, Thurman writes about the work of building community and the importance of establishing an identity that is based on the commonality that we find with all of life. This is a short, but profound read that will provide meaningful, thought provoking conversation. A book order has already been placed, so books should be purchased on your own. Please make sure to sign-up for this study with Leah!

Class of 2019, congratulations! We want to formally recognize your accomplishments, and celebrate these milestones alongside each of you. If you are graduating from college, we would like to have the following information for our church's publications. Please send the graduate's name, college, and degree to Deborah by Thursday, May 30. Email Deborah here!

In the month of May we will be collecting items for the Ronald McDonald House in Durham.  This organization is so helpful to the many families in our area who have children hospitalized and who need to be able to stay near them. The house provides a place to stay with all the comforts of home and a caring and compassionate environment that focuses on helping the families as they face these scary times with their children. We will collect individual chips, breakfast bars, granola bars and packages of crackers (like Nabs). Everything purchased must be packaged individually.
Your donations may be placed in the marked drawer of the cabinet in the Lewis Building May 1– 31.

On Saturday, June 8, our church will be participating in the Downtown Faith Coalition Habitat Build. The house we will be working on is located at 3044 Camden Creek in the Crosstowne Subdivision. We'll need 15 volunteers to help on that Saturday, and lunch will be provided. More details on time and specific projects to come! If you would like to volunteer, please contact Tom Bersuder as soon as possible.

JUNE 24-28

Remember how much fun Vacation Bible School was when you were a child? Or maybe you use potholders and trays and trivets that your children made in Bible School in previous years, and it brings back a flood of memories for those summer days spent in Christian community, and a huge wave of gratitude for the teachers who made it so fun. Now’s your chance to pay that forward!
This summer, Vacation Bible School will be held the mornings of June 24-28 , 9am -12pm , and we need YOU to make it a fantastic week for our rising 3 year olds through rising 6 th  graders!
Here are the ways you can help:
  • Co-teaching a self-contained preschool class! We have teaching spaces available in rising 3’s and rising pre-K.
  • Co-teaching a 40-minute rotation for grade-schoolers! We have teaching spaces available in Bible Study and Recreation rotations.
If you can help, please let Lynn know as soon as possible. Email Lynn here!
The Dental Bus is coming to FBC on Friday, May 31, from 7:30am-3pm to serve our Clothing Ministry clients in need of dental care. Volunteers are needed to help with set up, check in, overseeing patients in the waiting area, blood pressure work, and assisting in communications between waiting area and the bus. There are morning and afternoon shifts, or you can choose to volunteer the entire time. If interested, please contact Jay Bissette. Email Jay here!

"For the prayers, comments, cards, and calls received during my cancer treatment, we are most grateful. The report that my Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma has been cured was a blessing received. The FBC family is a caring, sharing, and loving one. Thank you for all the expressions of love." - Chet Goolsby

On May 20-22, FBC will host three national organizations holding their annual meeting. Over 200 participants will be at FBC from the National Association of Baptist Professors of Religion, the Baptist History and Heritage Society, and the Association of Ministry Guidance Professionals. The joint meeting will include plenary sessions, smaller group sessions, lunches, and dinners. Some of the meetings will be open to FBC members as the host facility and we will let you know about that shortly. But first, we have some volunteer opportunities for our FBC family:

  • Volunteers are needed to help with quick room changes to accommodate the meeting schedule, assisting our facilities staff.
  • Meal servers are needed to assist the food service staff before, during, and after meals.
  • Greeters are needed to welcome our guests and provide directions from 2-7:30pm on Monday, 8am-6pm on Tuesday, and 8am-noon on Wednesday.

If you are wiling to help with any of these opportunities, please contact Wayne Hager, who is serving as the FBC space coordinator for the meetings. Email Wayne here!
