Governor's Message   2013-2014 RI Theme Logo

I returned recently from Guatemala, where I experienced first hand the value of our efforts to provide access to medical x-ray equipment for the over 15 million residents of that country. At the clinic in Mixco, where the first machine of our 29-machine "HealthRays: Guatemala" project was installed in late August and officially inaugurated by Rotary President Elect Gary Huang in early September, we lGov. Sarah Photoearned that patients are coming into the clinic more quickly for attention to injuries and illnesses because their cases now can be analyzed quickly and handled locally instead of requiring an investment of a day or more of time to get evaluation and treatment at the closest public hospital. We learned that a trauma specialist physician has been added to the clinic staff because those cases are there to be treated. And we saw first-hand the importance to a family of having their small son receive an x-ray of his sinuses to determine whether he needed treatment for bacterial or for viral sinusitis so that his treatment could begin almost immediately and close to home.

PDG Pam, PDG Carlos and I met met with representatives of governments and international aid agencies committed to expanding public health services in Guatemala; and at the 21st annual Central America Project Fair, we met representatives of Rotary districts and Rotary clubs from Canada and the United States who were looking for projects to support that will address needs of under-served populations in Central America. Pam and Carlos are following up with all of them.

I am looking forward to our District Conference April 11-13 in Oak Brook. We'll begin our weekend together with the Paul Harris Luncheon at noon on Friday, April 11, and conclude late Sunday morning, April 13, after a brunch session that will include awards presentations and recognition of a number of clubs in the District. In between we will enjoy inspiring speakers, informative sessions, and great fellowship and fun in our House of Friendship and with evening Hospitality on Friday and Saturday.

Along with District Conference on Saturday, April 12, there will be our District Assembly to train incoming and continuing club leaders and a service project and the Youth Assembly for our Interact, Youth Exchange and RYLA participants. We will look together towards the future of Rotary in District 6440.

Whether you believe in the groundhog or trust in no weather predictions, I thank you for continuing your Rotary service in some challenging conditions and for your actions to improve the lives of so many individuals and families in need.

Governor Sarah

Save the Date: April 11-13 is the District Conference

The conference will be in the same Oak Brook venue as last year and again will incorporate District Assembly and Youth Assembly on Saturday, April 12.  Marriott no longer owns the property, but it remains the Oak Brook Hills Resort and will provide us with even more space for our activities than we had before.  We'll begin with the Paul Harris Luncheon on Friday (no Friday morning sessions) and end mid-day on Sunday with a brunch session that includes awards to clubs for their achievements.  In between we'll hear inspiring speakers and stories of exciting projects and share fellowship and fun at meals, in the House of Friendship, and during Hospitality on Friday and Saturday evenings.Conference

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ROTARY, on February 23rd !

The anniversary of the birth of Rotary in 1905.

A Meaningful Story About Rotary Literacy Work -- By Şafak Alpay, RI Director-Elect and Member of the Rotary Club of Istanbul-Sisli, Turkey.

About ten years ago, an ambitious literacy campaign was started in our region using the Concentrated Language Encounter (CLE) method. Like all other clubs, my club Sisli participated with great enthusiasm, running a course for women in one of Istanbul's slum neighborhoods.

On graduation day, one young woman who was among those to receive their certificates captured everyone's attention. She had both her lower arms missing, and as her certificate was placed under her armpit, Emine timidly asked her instructor to get the sheet of paper she kept in her pocket. It was a thank-you letter written to the person who taught her to read and write.  Read more of this post by clicking here.

$203,000,000 U.S. Commitment to Polio Eradication

The folks in Washington have approved an additional $203 million to support polio eradication work in 2014 and further help the rest of us wipe out the scourge of polio forever.  The Senate has passed a resolution acknowledging World Polio Day and in support of Rotary International and its partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.

The allocation was part of an omnibus appropriations bill signed by the President in late January.  Both Senator Durbin and Senator Kirk were sponsors of the resolution.  Said Gov. Sarah, "Club members can write to our supportive Senators and to his/her Representative (e-mail is just fine) who voted for the appropriation to thank her/him for supporting polio eradication and to re-iterate the priority that we Rotarians place on ending polio now."

Editor's Comments --
We have tried to move the newsletter distribution earlier in the month... but volunteer work is sometimes, at least with your editor, "worth what you pay for it" [Editor's humor].   I regret personal obligations/scheduling postponed this month's newsletter.  We look forward to communicating with you early next month, perhaps to wave "Hello" to Spring.
