Governor's Message   2013-2014 RI Theme Logo

November has proved to be a month of excitement and challenge and is showing us at every turn why our involvement with Rotary is so meaningful to us.

We began with a successful and enjoyable Fall Seminar Day that provided both seasoned and newer club members with Gov. Sarah Photoideas and tools to use moving forward to increase the vibrancy of their clubs and the impact of their service. A large majority of our clubs received the Grants Management training required to allow their clubs to become certified for 2014-2015 use of money from The Rotary Foundation.

A week later our club members were deciding what they might do to assist in relief efforts after Super Typhoon Hayian in the Philippines and energetically raising money to support the work of ShelterBox, a Rotary partner for emergency relief situations. Rotarians are "buying" traditional fully-packed green boxes for use there and also supporting the ShelterBox Solution Fund that allows that agency to provide supplies as needed and is not limited to the complete ShelterBox.

Two weeks after Fall Seminar Day we found ourselves working with Rotarians in District 6460 to assist victims of tornadoes in central Illinois. I reached out immediately on our behalf to Rotarian friends in that area, and webmaster Rich Lalley posted information about where to send monetary donations to support those Rotarians as they work tirelessly to help neighbors and friends who lost homes and businesses in the winds.

In conjunction with the Illinois Emergency Management Agency, FEMA and other voluntary agency partners, representatives of District 6460 are working tirelessly to assist victims of the recent tornadoes.  The single Facebook location for vetted and confirmed information about relief efforts is Central Illinois Emergency InformationAny other Facebook page is not official or verified.  Similarly, up-to-date official information for all the state tornado sites may be found at  The relevant story on our district website will be updated quickly as new information becomes available. Our district website will be updated frequently to let you know quickly as specific needs change The checks that you send now are the best help you can give at this point.

Rotary International has announced officially that Membership Growth is our highest priority second only to polio eradication. As many of us in our district have been aware for several years, our clubs are losing members more rapidly than we are adding them. We must work together in every way possible to change that declining trend line to a rising one. The service that is so meaningful to us as individuals and together as clubs simply will not happen in the future if our membership continues to shrink. If every member is given the chance to be successful in a Rotary activity of his choosing, then he likely will not wish to be away from your club. If each potential member can be shown the wide array of options available to us in service and fellowship, then she likely will want to learn more about your club and become a member. If each new member is welcomed warmly into your branch of the Rotary family and helped to become involved quickly in meaningful work, then he probably will become one of your best recruiting agents for additional members.

As we work together here and in partnership with branches of our Rotary family in other places, I continue to be grateful for the opportunity you have given me.

My best wishes to you this holiday season: we have a lot for which to be thankful, joy to share and a lot of good to do.  To my family members of the Jewish faith, my best wishes also for Hanukkah,

Governor Sarah

Tornado Response for Central Illinois
Monetary contributions are needed, but currently there are no opportunities to volunteer. While there will be a need to donated goods, at this time the collection sites are full.  For contacts to make contributions, see the bottom of the complete newsletter story.

For insight into some day-to-day aspects of Rotary efforts, you can read a couple of e-mails from Phil Fleming, 6460 Assist. Gove.

and Shelter Box, see Gov. Sarah's e-mail by clicking here, and for the recent Rotary Magazine story on efforts there, click...there.
Fall Seminar Outcome -- Thanks and Comments

Gov. Sarah wrote the following after the event.  "Past Dist. Gov. Bruce wore his tech guru hat as gracefully as his Grants Committee Chair hat, and the teams handling the Membership session and the Public Image session truly energized their groups.  Our RI Director Mary Beth Growney-Selene, after she had given all of us an update on some Board discussions of this past week, once again left newer Rotarians and Youth Exchange students looking excitedly towards future Rotary activities.  Keynote speaker Julie Ahern, in sharing her story from Ambassadorial scholarship candidate to seasoned second grade teacher, certainly illustrated the power of our Rotary Foundation to change multiple lives over several decades with one thoughtful decision."

Packin" it In at
Seminar End

"Teacher Julie was very pleased to receive books donated for her school as a thank-you from us for speaking at our breakfast plenary session.  Anyone who forgot or was unable to bring a book to Medinah still can say thank you to her by making a small contribution online and link to one of her classroom projects.  Search for those projects by typing Julie Ahern into the zip code box for refining the search."

"Many, many thanks to Nancy Keppel and Julie Clark for handling all the venue arrangements and logistics for Fall Seminar Day and to Administrative Assistant Kristina Laib for organizing the check-in..."

Idea -- Post Your Club's Holiday Events, and Where to Look for Fun that Supports Rotary
This winter season brings many holidays, fun fellowship and fund raisers.  Visiting neighboring clubs to pass the word (and "hat" for tickets) is one way of publicizing.  Be sure to check and use your and neighboring clubs' social media sites, the District Website club Picture of Candy Canes calendar, and your local media via press releases, contact with reporters, and advertisements.

Some examples of upcoming events are Barrington's uniquely suburban ChristKindlFest (click here for details).  Or try Arlington Rotary's Santa Run to work up a thirst !  Or just marvel and buy at Wilmette Harbor Rotary's Holiday Artisan Fair
Idea -- Interest Potential Members by...

...asking them to join you in your next community service project and invite them, as well as members of our Rotary youth programs, to bring more hands and heads to that project.  Show them the joy that comes through that service and fellowship with your club members.  Then show excitement as you reach out through various media with a picture or two and the story of your project.  Let local non-Rotarians see who you are and why you are so important to your community.

A Short List...of Short, Noteworthy Things:
  • Sydney Convention Airline Discounts -- Qantas Airlines is offering registered delegates and their traveling companions discounted fares on travel to Australia. For more about the convention, click here.  You must be registered for the SyndeyConventionLogo convention prior to purchasing these fares. Our district On-To-Sydney Chair, Stan Sherman (847-736-6513), can provide information about numerous aspects of travel for this Convention.  See his instructions for registration by clicking here.

  •  "Not to beat a dead 'Wallaroo' to death", so to speak, but

....Remember that there is Limited Rotary Housing at the convention, Use Reservation Form very soon by clicking here.

  • Photo Represents Your Successful Commitment as Dist. 6440 Rotarians:

This is the ceremony Past Dist. Gov. wrote about last month, celebrating your and the district's remarkable support of the foundation.  Let's keep it up -- remember that the Paul Harris match is still available.  Contact your club's Foundation Chair about year-end giving.
