The Rotary District 6440 Newsletter is filled with announcements, articles and information about our clubs, our members and making a difference through Rotary.

Although the days still are very warm, children have returned to school all over the district and fall sports are on the docket.
For our Rotary clubs, it is a time to welcome inbound youth exchange students and look towards more involvement with the local Interact club, a time to plan fellowships and expansion of service, a time to build on club member stories to attract potential members.
I have completed about a third of my Official Visits so far and have enjoyed every one of them. The richness that is the tapestry of our clubs continues to amaze and inspire me. Long-time Rotarians and the newest members actively share their ideas, talents and time to explore ways that their clubs can increase awareness of Rotary service and fellowship and succeed in increasing both.
A district Membership Task Force has been formed to think outside the box about increasing membership and to develop tools and procedures that reflect best practices for adding new members to the Rotary Family and for engaging both those new ones and the current ones who remain a bit on the sidelines. Chaired by DGN Rodney Adams and including DGE Ellen Young, Membership Chair Jim Uszler and PDG Mike Yesner, the task force will continue to work closely with the district Membership Committee to assure that clubs have the support they need to address their membership concerns.
The first equipment installation of the planned-for 29 with our Guatemala X-ray Project has been completed, and RI President-elect Gary Huang will officially inaugurate it in a few days. Project Chair PDG Pam Kerr and Vice-chair PDG Carlos Frm will join the First lady of Guatemala, the Guatemalan Minister of Health, some of our Rotary and non-Rotary partners and others for the celebration. This machine has been operational for several weeks now and providing an exciting improvement in health care for its poverty-stricken community.
I look forward to spending time with more of you soon as I continue my Official Visits and remind you that your district team wants to assist you however we can.
Yours in Rotary Service,
Governor Sarah

Next Step for the X-ray Project -- Guatemala's First Lady and RI's President-Elect Gary Huang at Official Launch this Monday, Sept. 2 !
District 6440's digital x-ray project is moving into it's next phase. The first of a planned 29 machines has been funded thanks to a Global Grant recently approved by The Rotary Foundation. Special thanks go out to the following clubs for their generous financial contributions to this project: Northbrook, Schaumburg-Hoffman Estates, Wilmette Harbor, Winnetka-Northfield, Evanston Lighthouse, Lake in the Hills, Crystal Lake, Skokie Valley and Wheeling. Giving a moving description of early use, Juan Carlos Botrn in Guatemala wrote, "The machine had not even 24 hours running time and already had good stories. We hope to have many more, in many other places." To read the rest of his comments, click here. "Sooner than Later" is Possible Thanks to a Paul Harris Match...
Once again a generous Rotarian in our district has offered for a limited time to match $500 contributions to The Rotary Foundation Annual Fund/SHARE so that fellow Rotarians can achieve Paul Harris Fellow recognition more quickly. Contact your club Rotary Foundation chair.

Some Changes in Club Operations
We all feel it's Important to us to Involve those who care in our community and build awareness of Rotary. Sometimes even our "Rules" can have an impact.
Gov. Sarah informed club presidents that Rotary's Council on Legislation made decisions that affect some aspects of RI, district and club operations. To see some examples, click here.

Polio Eradication News
Although Somalia had been polio free since 2007, the outbreak occurring now from wild virus coming into the country totaled 100 confirmed cases as of August 14. With a $500,000 Rapid Response Grant from The Rotary Foundation and US$15.3M in funds from the United Kingdom, immunization of up to 6.1M people in that at-risk region of Africa began immediately.
The probability of outbreaks in previously polio-free areas is included in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative Strategic Plan developed jointly among the GPEI partners, and everything possible continues to be done to limit this one in spite of areas in Somalia with no effective government control.

Idea: Thinking of Club Projects? Here's an example -- Oswego Rotary Shares a Youth Safety Story
The Rotary Club of Oswego, Illinois, in neighboring District 6450 worked with public safety personnel, psychologists, counselors, and classroom teachers to address the issue of teenage drinking and driving in their community.
The video they produced for the project illustrates the emotional toll on first responders from tragic accidents, and the program has helped reduce accidents involving younger drivers.

Idea: ...and a Project in Palatine.
To celebrate its 50th anniversary, The Rotary Club wanted to come up with a way to give back to the Palatine community.
The Palatine Rotary Club and the Village of Palatine are working together to create Rotary Plaza, which will contain landscaping, benches, a flag pole and an electronic sign that will let people know what events are happening around town. Read more by clicking Trib Local
