Message from President Mary

Rotary made history with the "End Polio Now" Livestream broadcast from New York City last Friday. It featured appearances by Rotary Special Ambassadors such as actress Archie Panjabi (from TV's "The Good Wife"), singer Angelique Kidjo and other celebrities. Its purpose was to bring worldwide attention to the ongoing effort to end polio, a joint effort of Rotary International, UNICEF and the World Health Organization. The message for the world was that no child anywhere should have to suffer from this crippling but preventable disease.

This year, only Afghanistan and Pakistan have reported new cases of the wild polio virus. Nigeria saw its last polio case in July, 2014. When all of Africa has gone three years without a case of polio, the WHO will then declare it polio free. But, there is much work still to be done. It's too early to claim success, since one case of polio can spread so quickly. Rotary International has released $40.3 million this year to end polio worldwide. In the last 30 years, grants to Africa alone have totaled $688.5 million.

This massive effort has truly made history, and will be an astounding global victory when it is finally successful.

Ally Peterson - My Rotary Youth Exchange Year in Mexico
