We're in the midst of "Persimmon Week," and in 3 harvests to date volunteers have picked 5,000 pounds of persimmons for communities throughout the area. That's enough to benefit more than 5,000 people in need, and a great time for the 65 volunteers who participated. We had more tree owners offer to share fruit than we could include in the first week, and we're excited to add a Mountain View home persimmon harvest this weekend. Here's a new opportunity for volunteers who haven't been able to participate this year:

A group of 15 volunteers harvested Hachiya and Fuyu persimmons from 4 homes in Mountain View, including a front yard Hachiya tree named "Scarlet" by the owners.  and sorting after ...  Gilroy Fuyu Persimmon Orchard, Sunday November 16 40 volunteers visited Gilroy to pick an old orchard with 20 very large Fuyu persimmon trees. After overnight rains, the hourly forecast said "0 inches of rain" but there were still occasional showers through the morning. Still, spirits were high and volunteers did a terrific job picking fruit low and high. By the end, the group filled 4 large farm bins with 3,558 pounds of persimmons for South County Community Services in Gilroy (they weighed the bins for an exact number). This was a new record for Village Harvest at this orchard, and thousands of people will have fresh fruit for Thanksgiving.
