As we get closer to our exciting Philadelphia trip, we wanted to share some helpful information about transportation between the airport and our hotels in Wilmington, Delaware.
Why Isn't There a Group Airport Shuttle?
The Liberty Belle Trip Committee explored several options for providing a group airport shuttle service between the airports and our hotels. Unfortunately, the cost of chartering shuttles for the many different arrival and departure times was prohibitively expensive and would have added significant costs to the trip.
The good news is that rideshare services such as Uber and Lyft offer a much more affordable and flexible option—especially when shared with fellow Rounders!
Approximate Transportation Costs
Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) to Wilmington Hotels
- Distance: Approximately 22-25 miles
- Typical Uber/Lyft fare: $35-$60
- Taxi fare: Often $60-$90+
Wilmington Airport (ILG) to Wilmington Hotels
- Distance: Approximately 6-8 miles
- Typical Uber/Lyft fare: $15-$30
- Taxi fare: Often $25-$40+
Please note that prices vary based on traffic, time of day, and demand.
Sharing a Ride Saves Money
One of the biggest advantages of Uber and Lyft is the ability to split costs.
For example:
- A $50 ride shared by 2 people is about $25 each.
- A $50 ride shared by 4 people is about $12.50 each.
Many members will be arriving on the same flights, making ridesharing an excellent value.
Finding Other Rounders on Your Flight
If you'd like to coordinate transportation with other band members:
- Post in the Rounders Facebook Group.
- Use Band app messaging.
- Let others know your flight number and arrival time.
- Connect with members traveling on the same flight before departure.
This can help you save money and make the trip even more enjoyable.
Uber vs. Lyft vs. Taxi
Uber
- Largest rideshare service in the United States.
- Widely available at both Philadelphia and Wilmington airports.
- Easy-to-use mobile app.
- Drivers are background checked and GPS tracked.
Lyft
- Very similar to Uber.
- Sometimes slightly cheaper, sometimes slightly more expensive.
- Many travelers check both apps and choose the lower fare.
Traditional Taxi
- Available at airport taxi stands.
- No smartphone app required.
- Usually the most expensive option.
- Pricing is generally less competitive than rideshare services.
Understanding Vehicle Options
Both Uber and Lyft offer several vehicle sizes.
UberX / Lyft Standard
- Most common and economical option.
- Typically seats up to 4 passengers.
Uber Comfort
- Newer vehicles with extra legroom.
Uber XL / Lyft XL
- Larger SUVs or vans.
- Seats up to 6 passengers.
- Great option if you have luggage and want to share with several fellow Rounders.
Uber Black
- Premium service.
- Significantly more expensive.
- Not necessary for most travelers.
How to Use Uber or Lyft
If you've never used a rideshare service before, don't worry! It's easier than you might think.
- Download the Uber or Lyft app before your trip.
- Create an account and enter a credit card.
- After collecting your luggage, open the app.
- Enter your destination:
- Westin Wilmington
- Homewood Suites Wilmington Riverfront
- The app will tell you where the designated rideshare pickup area is located.
- Request your ride.
- The app will show:
- Driver's name
- Vehicle make and model
- License plate number
- Estimated arrival time
- Confirm the license plate before entering the vehicle.
- Enjoy the ride!

Both hotels are located next to each other on the Wilmington Riverfront, making transportation simple regardless of which hotel you're assigned.
