This privileged access is only possible thanks to far-sighted wildlife management having saved a species from extinction. By 1993 a mere three black rhinos occupied the Moru Kopjes area of the Serengeti National Park – down dramatically from 700 some 20 years earlier. In 1995 the Serengeti Rhino Project was launched, with the Michael Grzimek Memorial Rhino Post established to coordinate both rhino tracking and protection from poachers.

In September 2019, Tanzania introduced nine new rhinos to boost the breeding program and encourage genetic diversity. Rangers now patrol 3500 square kilometres within which every one of the 50+ black rhinos have been born in the wild.

The United Republic of Tanzania, January 2023 Travel Advisory states:

All travelers are advised to be fully vaccinated.

All travelers entering or transiting are no longer required to present a COVID-19 vaccination certificate or RT-PCR certificate or perform Rapid Antigen Test on arrival UNLESS stated otherwise by conveyance to be used for country of their final destination.

On arrival, thermal and physical screening will be done. Passengers found to be symptomatic will be immediately isolated and handled as per health protocol.

Prior to departure for Tanzania, travelers must check requirements for their destination country when departing Tanzania or conveyance to be used.

All travelers should self-monitor their health post arrival in Tanzania and report to their nearest health facility.
