Posters: Fifth grade dual immersion students conveyed the legend of the nine sons of the dragon king via sculpted models and illustrated informational posters. District leadership pictured with students (Teddy Cheng, Sal Hernandez, Emily Xu, and Qianqian Zhu).

Hurley Elementary students created stunning artwork and history projects that filled their library. Here are a few fourth grade students who share what they learned while making their Lunar New Year creations:

Alexa Flores: “I learned that when eating noodles, you don’t cut them because they represent long life.”

Andrew Chavez: “I created a dragon because this year it is the Year of the Dragon.”

Maylina Rose Garcia: “I learned about the red envelopes. There is an evil spirit and if you don’t leave a red envelope under your pillow it will haunt you forever. You give red envelopes to your family filled with money for good luck and fortune.”

Alice Liu: “I made a lantern and learned that red lanterns represent health and good fortune.”

Alex Bonilla: “I learned that fireworks are used for the Chinese New Year to scare off the monster – Nian.”

Rowland Elementary PTA hosted their first schoolwide Chinese New Year Celebration. Students could wish good fortune to their families with a wishing tree, take photos with a dragon and learn more about the history of the celebration through various craft activities that included making a fire breathing dragon, crafting a Chinese drum to keep the "bad luck" monster away, and creating a dancing dragon mask. Dragons were said to have control over water, rainfall, and floods and were symbols of power, strength and good luck for the people of East Asia who engaged in dragon dances to encourage the favor of these mighty creatures.
