SDF at Hearts and Hammers Gala
|
|
Roxbury High School's new Structural Design and Fabrication program continues to support the community. The course that covers a wide variety of topics including construction, carpentry, architecture, and design allows students to put their knowledge and skills to work here at home in Roxbury and last Saturday members of the SDF program and RHS took part in Morris Habitat for Humanity's Hearts and Hammers Gala at the Meadow Wood Manor in Randolph. This is Morris Habitat's largest annual fundraiser with over 500 people in attendance this year, the most yet.
This year's event celebrated the 35th Anniversary of Morris Habitat for Humanity and the work they have done to build affordable housing in the greater Morris County community.
Roxbury's SDF program worked with the Habitat staff and volunteers to design and build two items for the event. The first was a photo booth that showed the layers of a house being built at various stages of the building process. Showing studs, sheathing, foam insulation, and vinyl siding.
The other project was a model home the students built that was featured on the center of the stage next to the speakers throughout the evening.
Students worked to give the home a high level of detail, complete with lines where siding would be, a porch, a garage, and even a small doorknob. Roofing shingles manufactured by GAF were used to showcase GAF, one of the largest and most loyal sponsors of Morris Habitat for Humanity.

Roxbury Schools Go Global with Annual Multicultural Expo
The Roxbury High School Dining Hall was again alive with color, food, performances, spectators, and energy at the fifth annual Global Hi-5 Multicultural Expo on February 20th. More than 400 students, organizations, families, and community members came out to take part in this festive event.
Marcia Cordeiro, one of the expo organizers, Roxbury staff member, and parent shared that this event is a way to "experience the gift of one HUMAN race and its multisensory cultural diversity in CommUNITY."
The event invited tourists to get their passports stamped while their five senses were tantalized through international expressions of cuisine, music, arts, crafts, costumes, dance performances, and so much more! In addition to the 16 country expos (filled with artifacts, food, brochures, fun-facts, posters, pictures, and instruments, etc.) to visit there was continuous entertainment going on.
This collaborative event is organized by the Roxbury School District staff, students, parents, and community members. Roxbury Schools participating organizations included the Eisenhower Middle School and Roxbury High School Spanish Clubs, French Club, RoxTHON, and Roxbury's Robotics Program, and Roxbotix Team. These organizations are run by advisors and student members.
"We would like to express our heartfelt thank you for attending our 5th Global Hi-5 Multicultural Expo. We would especially like to thank all of our "Countries" and groups that participated to make this a great event. Without their love of their respective countries and cultures, this great country and this event would not be possible. We feel it is important to show our diversity, not just in Roxbury, but in the world. We are all one people who share a love of different cultures." Rox-THON gets their Flock on
Flocking is back at Roxbury! It will begin this fall and continue until the ground freezes, before resuming next spring; all weather dependent. While the fundraiser remains the same, the organization bears a new name. Putting more of an emphasis on our local community, Roxbury High School's mini-THON will now be known as Rox-THON. It is the same group of students working towards the same cause, however, a majority of our proceeds will now stay here in Morris County.
Starting this year, donations will go to Goryeb Children's Hospital (Morristown, NJ) and 30% of those proceeds will support pediatric cancer research and medical bills through Four Diamonds (Penn State Children's Hospital). Roxbury High School will also host its 7th Annual event to fight childhood cancer on Friday, March 13, 2020.
"Flocking is super simple! Flocking is when you harmlessly prank your friends by signing up for us to put a flock of plastic flamingo
s on their lawn," explained Captain Holly Van Ness, a senior at the school.
If you would like to flock-a-friend, you can choose how many flamingos you want to migrate to your friend's yard for up to 48 hours. A small flock of only 10 flamingos is only $15, a medium flock of 30 for $25, or you can choose a large flock of 50 flamingos for $35. If you have a special occasion, you may also choose to request a specific date for an additional $15. Click here to read more on our website under "In the News".

Lake Hopatcong Foundation urges lakefront property owners to order numbered dock signs
The non-profit Lake Hopatcong Foundation is urging lakeside residents to order dock number signs to post on their docks in case of emergencies.
The signs are $30 each.
According to the foundation, these attractive, weatherproof aluminum signs are blue with white reflective numbers. They do not contain any personal information and can be mounted to a dock, boathouse, post, or tree. B-SAFE dock numbers are designed to help emergency personnel efficiently respond by land or water. A posted number can also provide an easy way for friends to locate a dock.
Order by June 1 for delivery on or about July 1.
According to the foundation, Each lakefront property has been assigned a unique dock number, or "lake address," which is linked to the 9-1-1 street address. Lakefront property owners may voluntarily purchase and post a B-SAFE dock number where it can be easily seen from the water. If an emergency occurs, an accurate location can be reported using the nearest dock number as a reference point.
If an emergency occurs on the water, ice or land CALL 9-1-1.
Locate the nearest dock sign and provide the number to the 9-1-1 operator. Emergency resources will be sent to that location.
Landowners can report a water emergency and the 9-1-1 operator will be able to translate the street address to a water location.
