Creating Persuasive Arguments for a Good Cause

Mackenzie Johnston reads her persuasive essay on the Humane Society to Ms. B's class
|
 |
During this season of giving, third-grade teacher Alyssa Bellardino at Nixon Elementary School came up with an idea to tie her students' persuasive writing into their social-emotional learning about giving back and helping others.
Bellardino challenged her students to research and write a persuasive argument on a charity of their choice which they had to present to the class. Students had to inform their peers about the charity they chose and provide an argument as to why people should support these organizations.
Her 21 students read their research and stated their arguments the Friday before winter break. The students listened attentively to one another as each presented using their teacher voices to project to the whole class what they had learned and even shared some statements to persuade you further like a shout out of "SAVE THE TURTLES!" by Jonathan Rivera who presented on Turtle Island Restoration Network. Juliana Hernandez also read her argument to the class on this charity.
Charities shared included the Humane Society of the United States, Wags and Walks, St. Jude's, World Wildlife Fund, Make-a-Wish, the Wildlife Conservation Society, Woodlands Wildlife Refuge, the Foundation for Morristown Medical Center, Samaritan's Purse, Alex's Lemonade Stand, Unicef, Junior Diabetes Research Foundation, Locks of Love, ASPCA, St. Hubert's, and National Autism Association.
At the conclusion of the presentations, Bellardino shared, "I'm so proud of you! I know how long of a process this was and you learned that we have to revise, edit, publish, and all of those things, so it did take a long time and I know you spent a lot of time on it, so I'm proud of you. You know that it is something that's important to me if it's important to you, so I will be donating $1 to your charities this holiday season to show you that even though it's only a $1 it's going to make a huge difference in the lives of someone or something, like an animal." Roxbury School Bd Chooses Scheneck as President, Welcomes New Member
Succasunna lawyer Carol Scheneck was chosen Monday to be president of the Roxbury Board of Education, replacing former board president Leo Coakley.
The board's decision to give the post to Scheneck came at a meeting that also saw the swearing-in of a new member, Michelle Danielson. She was elected in November to fill a vacancy on the board created when former board member Richard Alexander decided to not seek re-election.
The board selected member Dan Masi to serve as its vice-president.
Roxbury Schools Superintendent Loretta Radulic welcomed Danielson. "I have to say, Michelle, you are joining a really progressive, collaborative, transparent, supportive board."

Seven RHS Band Students Accepted into Region Ensembles
The North Jersey School Music Association held its annual Region 1 Band auditions on January 4th, where approximately 450 students competed to earn a seat in one of two honors bands, and the orchestra's wind and percussion section.
Seven students from Roxbury High School were accepted into one of the ensembles and will participate in three rehearsals before putting on a concert at Parsippany Hills High School on Sunday, January 26th (Bands), or at James Caldwell High School on Sunday, February 9th (Orchestra).
Zach Solano earned the highest score of all auditioning tubas in northern New Jersey and will be performing with the Orchestra. Roxbury SDF students take part in National Apprenticeship Week
Students from the new Structural Design and Fabrication class from Roxbury High School visited the Northeast Regional Carpenters Training Center in Edison, NJ along with students from UBC Jobs Corps Edison and the Middlesex County Vo-tech for National Apprenticeship Week in November. While there, students were able to tour the training facility, learn more about potential careers in carpentry, and opportunities provided to union members.
Roxbury students were able to see how what they were learning in both SDF and Woodworking classes related to what is actually being done in the field.
SDF Teacher Frank Caccavale shared how trips like this benefit the students. "Roxbury High School believes it is important to provide students a variety of experiences to learn about potential career paths they can take after high school. It is for that reason a new class like SDF was created. Students were able to get a better understanding of a career in carpentry and can better make a decision if that is right for them or not, either way, it's a day well spent!"
Earlier this year, Roxbury High School entered into an articulation agreement with the Northeast Carpenters Apprenticeship Fund for a Carpentry Career Connections/Youth Transition to Work program. Students that complete Roxbury's SDF course and are admitted into the union are able to get a year of their apprenticeship.

Rox-THON gets their Flock on
Flocking is back at Roxbury! It will begin this fall and continue until the ground freezes, before resuming next spring; all weather dependent. While the fundraiser remains the same, the organization bears a new name. Putting more of an emphasis on our local community, Roxbury High School's mini-THON will now be known as Rox-THON. It is the same group of students working towards the same cause, however, a majority of our proceeds will now stay here in Morris County.
Starting this year, donations will go to Goryeb Children's Hospital (Morristown, NJ) and 30% of those proceeds will support pediatric cancer research and medical bills through Four Diamonds (Penn State Children's Hospital). Roxbury High School will also host its 7th Annual event to fight childhood cancer on Friday, March 13, 2020.
"Flocking is super simple! Flocking is when you harmlessly prank your friends by signing up for us to put a flock of plastic flamingo
s on their lawn," explained Captain Holly Van Ness, a senior at the school.
If you would like to flock-a-friend, you can choose how many flamingos you want to migrate to your friend's yard for up to 48 hours. A small flock of only 10 flamingos is only $15, a medium flock of 30 for $25, or you can choose a large flock of 50 flamingos for $35. If you have a special occasion, you may also choose to request a specific date for an additional $15. Click here to read more on our website under "In the News".

Roxbury Hockey Stays Undefeated in Division - Jan 7
The Roxbury High School ice hockey team returned to the win column Tuesday night with a hard-fought team effort. The much-needed win against Kinnelon came after two poorly-played losses last week to Ramapo and Madison.
Although they fell behind 1-0 in the first period in Tuesday's contest, the Gaels kept skating hard and applying pressure. That effort paid off early in the second period when Joe Carey scored the tying goal, with assists from Nick Thomas and Brian Westergaard.
Kinnelon goalie Brett Lewis kept the Colts in the game, turning away 43 of 44 shots. But with three minutes to go in the third period, shot 45 got by him.
The game winner was scored by Ethan Barooah with assists from Joe Carey and Gavin Woudenberg. The consistently steady Ryan Callahan was excellent in goal again for Roxbury, stopping 16 of 17 shots.
The win moves Roxbury to 5-0 in the division and 7-3-1 overall.
