PUBLIC BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING
For the foreseeable future, the Roxbury Township Board of Education will be holding virtual board of education meetings to conduct Board business while schools are closed due to the health-related emergency COVID-19.
The virtual location of the Board of Education meetings will be published through the traditional means and outlets as well as being available on the district's website (
www.roxbury.org) and in the Board of Education Office no less than 48 hours in advance. The district will make every effort to post the agenda for the meeting no later than 24 hours in advance for review and reference by members of the public. Similar to the in-person format of Board Meetings, members of the public will be provided an opportunity to make comments on both agenda and non-agenda items. All comments will be read into the record by the Board of Education President or designee announcing both the member of the public and his/her address as is customary to provide with comments. These comments will be submitted through the WebEx Chat Feature. In the event that additional information can be provided by a member of the Board or the Superintendent, it will be provided.
A recording of these meetings with video will be posted in the same way that the audio is posted for traditional, in-person meetings of the Board. Roxbury's next Board of Education meeting will be Monday, June 8th at 6:00 p.m.

Roxbury Student Receives MCPCA Caring Student Award
RHS Senior Victoria Gonzalez was recently selected as the recipient of the Morris County Caring Student Award for Roxbury High School.
The Morris County Professional Counselors Association presents annual MCPCA Caring Student of the Year Award Program to recognize one senior from each Morris County high school who has given selflessly to others, often being unrecognized. Past recipients have been volunteers within their school, community, places of worship, in hospitals, etc.
Prior to COVID-19, students were awarded with this recognition at a luncheon with their family and counselor.
This year though was a little different. The lead for this coordinated with all of the schools in Morris County to meet at the recipient's house and deliver the award in person (with a mask on).
Victoria Gonzalez was surprised with a visit on Tuesday, June 2nd by Chief Palanchi and a representative from MCPCA to receive her award sign and certificate. Click here to read more on our website under "In the News".
Signs of Support for Roxbury High School Seniors Robbed by a Virus
People driving down Bryant Drive to Roxbury High School are now greeted with a long line of signs showing the faces of the school's 2020 graduating seniors.
It is a dramatic display that school principal Dominick Miller characterized as "a small gesture." But it's really not very small.
The display includes about 310 signs carefully installed along the roadway by Steve Izzo, Steve Moskowitz and Tyler Wecht the Roxbury School District Buildings and Grounds crew, according to Miller. The line of placards stretches almost all the way from South Hillside Avenue to the school parking lots.
Miller said the display was the brainchild of Roxbury High School Director of Athletic and Student Activities Stuart Mason. He said Mason and Roxbury High School Assistant Principal Elizabeth Omegna "were the ones responsible for making sure we able to procure the signs."
To Show We Care
The principal said the closure of schools and cancelation of sports and school activities, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, was particularly impactful for the Class of 2020. The school has yet to announce whether it will provide the seniors with an in-person graduation. A "virtual graduation ceremony" is scheduled to take place June 19.
"Our seniors are losing out on so much this year," Miller said. "We were hoping this would let our seniors know that we are thinking of them and that we care about them. It is a small gesture, but we want our seniors to understand that we realize what they are missing out on and that we appreciate what the class of 2020 had meant to Roxbury High School and our community."
The signs display cost about $2,000, money taken from funds the school had budgeted for end-of-year events, according to the principal.
"Overall, our families and community have been grateful," Miller said. "We have received a number of emails from parents thanking the administration for the display."
He noted that he's spoken with several parents who "were in tears" after seeing the signs.

Roxbury Tuba Player Wins Music Scholarship
Zachary Solano of Ledgewood, who just completed 11th grade at Roxbury High School, has won the prestigious Hanover Wind Symphony (HWS) summer music scholarship in the senior division.
He will appear as a tuba soloist with the renowned wind band in the fall.
Principal tuba player with the All-State Wind Ensemble and the North Jersey Region Orchestra, the scholarship winner will use his scholarship to take private online lessons over the summer with Mike Roylance of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Dennis Nulty of Oberlin Conservatory and internationally renowned tubist Øystein Baadsvik.
Zachary has excelled at the tuba since he first took up the instrument. He was a finalist in the 2020 North Eastern Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference. he's been the principal tuba player with the Roxbury High School Honors Wind Ensemble since 2019, and he plays with the Roxbury High School Premier Brass Quintet.
He also won the Roxbury High School Awards for Outstanding Musicianship as both a freshman (2018) and a sophomore (2019). Click here to read more from TAPinto Roxbury.
Bringing Smiles is Goal of 'Adopt a Roxbury High School Senior' Group
The organizers of the "Adopt a Senior 2020" Facebook group hope the effort will "bring a smile" to the faces of Roxbury High School seniors whose graduation ceremonies have been waylaid by the coronavirus.
The
Facebook group, administered by Elaine Weinacker and Dana Guberman Taggart, provides a way for people to "adopt" a senior and then "do whatever they think is appropriate to put a smile on their face," Taggart said. "It could be a small card, a gift card, a gift basket or whatever the adoptee likes."
There are about 300 graduating seniors and about a third have been "adopted," Taggart said. "The community has been great," she said. "Seniors who have been posted are being picked-up quickly. We are so grateful to the tremendous response to this opportunity to put a smile on a senior's face."
She noted that the effort is not sponsored by the school district. Click here to read more from TAPinto Roxbury.

Kindergarten Registration Continues During COVID Closures
Roxbury Schools continues Kindergarten registration for the upcoming school year during the COVID-19 school closures.
Roxbury offers a full-day kindergarten program designed to develop knowledge and skills in the physical, social, emotional, and cognitive areas. Our goal is to help children develop skills and strategies that will help them learn and establish a foundation for lifelong success in education. The program allows more time for students to address curriculum in depth and allows teachers to provide additional activities in learning.
Children must be five years old on or before October 1, 2020 to participate. To register for Kindergarten, parents must bring their child's original birth certificate, a record of immunizations, and three proofs of residency at the time of registration.

Roxbury to reopen recycling center, but Saturdays only
The Township of Roxbury Recycling Center will reopen this weekend from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, May 16.
The center will be open on Saturdays only until further notice.
The purpose of this reopening is to allow residents to recycle items and materials not collected through the weekly curbside collection. These items include electronics (computers, printers, TVs, laptops, monitors, desktop printers, desktop faxes only), clothing, motor oil, metal items, fluorescent light bulbs and larger pieces of brush.
The safety of both staff and the public is paramount; as such social distancing of at least 6 feet must be maintained.
Not sure what material is collected curbside? Go to
roxburynj.us/sanitation-recycling for more detailed information how to properly prepare the material that is collected curbside.

Hazardous Waste Day Moved from Randolph to Parsippany - June 13
Morris County residents who planned to dispose of hazardous materials in Randolph on June 13 will now have to take the stuff to Parsippany.
The county Municipal Utliities Authority (MUA) initially said the June 13 waste disposal would take place at the County College of Morris. However, it recently changed that plan, moving the event to the Morris County Public Training Academy in Parsippany.
The MUA also added a second hazardous waste disposal day: June 28, also in Parsippany.
The MUA's first plan, to have a disposal event on May 16, was scuttled due to COVID-19.
Although the MUA has announced the rescheduled dates, the virus is still impacting the procedure. "Due to COVID-19 restrictions, all participants dropping off household hazardous materials must wear face coverings, keep their vehicle windows closed and stay in their vehicles for the duration of the event," said the MUA.
It is asking people to leave all the materials in the car trunks, cargo areas or truck beds "for easy access" by its contractor's workers who will remove the items from the vehicles.

Community Bulletin Board and News
Township of Roxbury partners with American Red Cross to host community blood drive - June 25
Township of Roxbury will host a community blood drive with the American Red Cross on Thursday, June 25, 2020 from 3:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. at the Township of Roxbury Senior Center located at 72 Eyland Avenue in Succasunna, NJ.
To Schedule an Appointment:
Individuals can schedule an appointment to give blood with the American Red Cross by visiting
RedCrossBlood.org using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, calling 1-800-RED CROSS or activating the Blood Scheduling Skill for Amazon Alexa.
Blood donation is essential: As the coronavirus pandemic has grown, the Red Cross has experienced an increase in blood drive cancellations across the country due to concerns about congregating at workplaces, college campuses and schools.
Blood donation is essential for hospitals to be able to take care of those who need it. This blood shortage could impact patients who need surgery, victims of car accidents and other emergencies, or patients suffering from cancer. The demand for blood products (blood, platelets and plasma) is constant, even when the world isn't in the midst of a global pandemic.
"We are excited to be hosting a blood drive here in town. If anyone is wondering what they can do to help during this pandemic, donating blood is a great way to give back." said Kellie Ann Keyes, Blood Drive Coordinator.
Additional questions can be directed to Kellie Ann Keyes at 973-448-2053.

Lake Hopatcong Veterans Cruise for 2020 - Rescheduled to Sept 26
The date has been set as Saturday, June 27th for the 5th Annual Veterans Cruise on Lake Hopatcong, and that means the scramble for seats has already started for this special tribute to our veterans - America's heroes.
Each year Lake Hopatcong Cruises honors our veterans from the lake's four border towns - Hopatcong, Jefferson, Mount Arlington, and Roxbury - with a two-hour complimentary cruise around the lake, and a special tribute is paid to the veterans throughout the cruise as residents line the bridges and docks with waving flags in honor of the service that they have provided to our country.
This event is extremely popular with the Veterans and will fill quickly, so please contact your appropriate town representative to have your name added to the list as soon as possible. Last year in Hopatcong the first-come-first-served list filled within days and overflowed into a long waiting list.
Lake Hopatong Block Party will now be held on Oct 10
The annual Lake Hopatcong Block Party has been moved to Saturday, Oct. 10.
"As was announced earlier, in following the CDC directive on public gatherings, we unfortunately cannot hold the Lake Hopatcong Block Party on May 9," a statement from Lee Moreau of the Lake Hopatcong Foundation states.
"We are now moving forward on rescheduling the Lake Hopatcong Block Party to Saturday, October 10, the day before the LHF Lake Loop, also at Hopatcong State Park," he said.
"For those who have already responded requesting a refund, those checks will be issued April 13 and put into the mail.
Thank you for being a part of the Lake Hopatcong Block Party, and please stay safe and healthy," he said. Click here to read this coverage from the Roxbury Register.
