Superintendent Communications on COVID-19 - May 7
 Dear Roxbury Community,
In our seventh week of Flexible Instruction Days (FID), Governor Murphy declared that schools will remain closed for the remainder of the school year. This notification has allowed us to move forward with our planning which includes end-of-the-year celebrations, updates to our FID plan, building clean outs, and more.
It is important to remember that while we may not be physically close, we continue to be connected. The number of videos that have been created to celebrate our connection has been vast, wonderful, and inspiring.
Click here to see the video created by our RHS Interact Club as they share their message of hope. We may not feel completely comfortable with our current reality, but together, we have demonstrated resilience, compassion, and tenacity at a level that we might not have believed possible.
We are planning how students will be able to clean out their lockers, pick up medications, and empty desks in a safe, socially distanced way. Communication is forthcoming from your building principals with directions and details. We may not be able to practice our customary traditions, but we hold our students in our hearts and are planning celebrations. In the upcoming weeks, you will learn the exciting details about High School Graduation, Prom, 8th Grade Step Up, Clap Outs, and other end-of-year celebrations from your building principals. During this time, we are also beginning new traditions, such as lights shining on our football field on Friday evenings at 2020 military time (8:20pm) for 20 minutes and 20 seconds will recognize and celebrate our seniors. See the image
here.
Our summer plans for Extended School Year and Summer Learning are forthcoming. Your patience is appreciated as we await guidance from the Department of Education even as we begin plans for re-opening our schools when permitted. We recognize that in this unprecedented time there is concern that our current reality will impact all students' typical progress nationally. To mitigate that concern and continue to support our students' learning progress, we have begun to discuss, plan, and create opportunities for Roxbury students. While our summer learning program usually focuses on literacy and math, we are working to expand the program so that it is cross-curricular, thereby supporting growth and progress, forwarding the standards in multiple disciplines and minimizing the "summer slide." Fortunately, our summer learning program has been virtual over the past two years so we are well prepared to continue to enrich choice and opportunities for our students.
We have remained Roxbury Strong! Let's finish out the 2020 school year with spirit, pride, and a hopeful vision for the future. Together, we have continued to learn, continued to support, continued to care, and continued to problem-solve through our resolve, our creativity and innovation, and our dedication. It's taken all of us to make this experience successful, and I am truly grateful. One last link that I'd like to share, if you haven't seen this YouTube
video, it's worth watching. Stay strong. Stay well.
Sincerely,
Loretta L. Radulic Superintendent of Schools

Public Board of Education Meeting
For the foreseeable future, the Roxbury Township Board of Education will be holding virtual board of education meetings to conduct Board business while schools are closed due to the health-related emergency COVID-19.
The virtual location of the Board of Education meetings will be published through the traditional means and outlets as well as being available on the district's website (
www.roxbury.org) and in the Board of Education Office no less than 48 hours in advance. The district will make every effort to post the agenda for the meeting no later than 24 hours in advance for review and reference by members of the public. Similar to the in-person format of Board Meetings, members of the public will be provided an opportunity to make comments on both agenda and non-agenda items. All comments will be read into the record by the Board of Education President or designee announcing both the member of the public and his/her address as is customary to provide with comments. These comments will be submitted through the WebEx Chat Feature. In the event that additional information can be provided by a member of the Board or the Superintendent, it will be provided.
A recording of these meetings with video will be posted in the same way that the audio is posted for traditional, in-person meetings of the Board. Roxbury's next Board of Education meeting will be Monday, May 11th at 6:00 p.m.
Prior to the start time of a meeting, please revisit
www.roxbury.org for a link to join the meeting.

Teacher Appreciation Week at Kennedy School
Tanya Shoudy, Kennedy Elementary School PTA Teacher Appreciation Week chairperson did an
amazing job on making the week 'virtually' special for our awesome teachers and staff, kicking off the week with a message from our mayor, filling each day of morning announcements with students' videos to their teachers, and ending the week with an amazing slideshow of gratitude.

Nixon Early Act Holds Bountiful Food Drive
Nixon Elementary School's Early Act Club held its rescheduled Food Drive this past Tuesday to help Roxbury Social Services during this health-related emergency COVID-19.
Nixon Early Act has been busy both in the regular school year and during these Flexible Instruction Days as they are coming off the heals of the Merry Heart drawings and card drive that they held a few weeks ago. This time they held a food drive. Nixon families and community members stopped by Nixon School to donate non-perishable food and other items to support Roxbury Social Services who are helping individuals and families in our community during these tough times.
Early Act Club advisor Kerry Hamberger who was present at the collection shared that there was just so much donated that she filled the back and front seats of her car. "Bags and boxes were packed. We had so much I had to call a friend with their vehicle so we could fill theirs as well. We had two carloads full of food!"
All of the collected non-perishable items were delivered to Roxbury Social Services on Wednesday. "They were overwhelmed with all of the donations we received," shared Hamberger.
Principal Lynch teased that Nixon Early Act has one more effort on the horizon. "We'll come back soon and release that and share with everyone what that last effort is before we put closure on this school year, you talk about Roxbury strong, Nixon strong in my opinion! Thank you for your leadership." Click here to read the full article on our website under "In the News".

Community is key -
Roxbury High School will participate every Friday until June 19. However, since the stadium is far from any main roads, the recreation department may also get involved.
Horseshoe Lake's fields will also be lit up on Friday nights. It will bring "a real community feel" to the celebration, according to high school principal Dominick Miller, while increasing the likelihood of proper social distancing.
"We're trying to find different ways to pay tribute and recognize our seniors," Miller said. "There's not much we can do besides posting things on our website and social media. This is something the community can see." Click here to read more from the NJ Herald.
Click here to check out RHS Principal Miller's announcements regarding prom and graduation from last Friday. Please stay tuned for updates as they come.
LRS 6th Graders Nominated for 2020 NJSMA Region I Elem Honors Band
Congratulations to ten sixth-graders at Lincoln/Roosevelt School for being nominated to participate in the 2020 NJSMA Region I Elementary Honors Band.
Logan Batsch (trumpet), Rachel Bishop (clarinet), Brooke Franetovich (trumpet), Alex Fullam (trombone), Michael Gutierrez (saxophone), Theresa Rosas (French horn), Sophie Sanders (flute), Mia Scalamoni (clarinet), Caden Scire (trumpet), and Nina Watson (trombone) were nominated based on exemplary performance and efforts on their instruments both in and outside the classroom. Final selections to the ensemble were made from a total of 331 talented North Jersey students.
The Elementary Honors Band Festival was scheduled to take place on May 2nd at South Orange Middle School and conclude with an afternoon concert. Unfortunately, due to the stay-at-home orders, the festival could not take place this year.
LRS Band Teachers Kate Katz and Timothy Orton shared, "We would like to commend these students for the hard work that secured their nomination and look forward to seeing many musical accomplishments from them in the future!" Click here to read this story on our website under "In the News".
LRS Choir Treated to Special Virtual Interview from Broadway Performer
Fifth and sixth-grade chorus members at Lincoln/Roosevelt had virtual "front row seats" to an interview with a former Broadway performer last Thursday.
Allison Fischer, who appeared in such productions as "A Christmas Carol", "Grease", and "Lestat", spent time video chatting with LRS Music Teacher Kate Katz in a live stream for students. Driven by student questions, Ms. Fischer provided insight as to how she got her start, what it's like to audition for and perform on Broadway, how she dealt with stage fright and mistakes during a performance and gave a resounding message of perseverance as advice to our student performers. The interview concluded with Ms. Fischer performing a song.

Roxbury Video Fights Virus Sadness
Hoping to "spread positivity" during a time of coronavirus-induced despair, the Roxbury High School Interact Club recently compiled video clips of uplifting messages submitted by students and some teachers.
Members of the club - Roxbury Rotary's arm in the high school - wanted to do something to make people feel better, said club president Camille Guglielmo. As have most organizations, the club has been meeting remotely.
The club put out a call for submissions, giving students and others a week to shoot videos of themselves offering positive messages. About 50 people responded, said Guglielmo.
Interact Club Member Ashley Miller compiled the clips into
a 3-minute-long video
, a job that took about a week, said Guglielmo, an 18-year-old senior.
Not The Senior Year They Anticipated -
"We were kind of tossing around ideas of something we could do," she said. "We went back and forth with a lot of different things. Someone suggested a video ... Our main goal was to spread positivity because, obviously, there's a lot of sadness right now."
The shut-down of Roxbury schools in mid-March, and the restrictions on getting together for extra-curricular activities, is taking its toll on many students, particularly her peers in the Class of 2020 Guglielmo said.
"I'm noticing a lot of sadness among the seniors," she said. "It's a really hard way to end senior year. You go to school with kids for 12 years ... I think the hardest thing is we won't get to have a proper goodbye." Click here to read more from TAPinto Roxbury and see this positivity video.

Roxbury Student Commits to Play Softball In College
Roxbury High School senior Camryn Lang has committed to play softball for Lock Haven University in the fall.
Lang will be studying in the Pre-Physician Assistant Program while playing for the Division II school in Lock Haven, PA.
She was the starting catcher for the Gaels, but she and her teammates were not able to play the spring softball season since the schools are closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Lang said she will most miss the time spent together with her Roxbury teammates. "There are a few girls on the team that I have played with since we were in recreation softball together in Kindergarten", Lang said.
Although her high school career did not end the way she envisioned, Lang said she is looking forward to starting her college softball career in the fall.

Coronavirus: NJ high school sports spring season canceled as schools will stay closed
Hope of a spring scholastic sports season ended Monday with the announcement by Gov. Phil Murphy that
New Jersey schools will remain closed for the rest of academic year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Murphy said the NJSIAA Medical Board advised the spring season should not be played due to the lack of testing, viable treatment and a vaccine.
"I know the NJSIAA took no pleasure in reaching that conclusion," Murphy said. "Frankly, neither do I in stating it."
Pandemic delivers final blow to high school season
Whether you feared the worst or were holding out hope for a miracle, your dream for some semblance of a high school sports season was dashed when Gov. Phil Murphy dropped the inevitable hammer on Monday.
High school seniors throughout the Garden State learned about noon on Monday that their desire to build lasting memories, during their much-anticipated senior seasons, was relegated to a months-long nightmare.
Honestly, waxing poetic about a situation out of the control of 17 and 18 year olds - and the rest of us for that matter - doesn't do anyone any good, doesn't make anyone feel better and is simply a waste of time. Let's not call a spade a shovel. This stinks on an immeasurable scale.
Once in a lifetime moments have been replaced by a once in a century pandemic.
Talking to players and coaches around the state, realism shines through that is humbling. Our coaches, as always, provide great perspective and our seniors provide great leadership in their mature approach to the kind of adversity no one could plan for. Their words are soothing.
You can see the raw emotion still right at the surface as we shared some thoughts with coaches and players around the state and we pray for a quick return to the field in preparation for the summer season. Click here to read Coach Greg Trotter's take from Diamond Nation.

Community Bulletin Board and News
Township of Roxbury partners with American Red Cross to host community blood drive - June 25
Township of Roxbury will host a community blood drive with the American Red Cross on Thursday, June 25, 2020 from 3:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. at the Township of Roxbury Senior Center located at 72 Eyland Avenue in Succasunna, NJ.
To Schedule an Appointment:
Individuals can schedule an appointment to give blood with the American Red Cross by visiting
RedCrossBlood.org using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, calling 1-800-RED CROSS or activating the Blood Scheduling Skill for Amazon Alexa.
Blood donation is essential: As the coronavirus pandemic has grown, the Red Cross has experienced an increase in blood drive cancellations across the country due to concerns about congregating at workplaces, college campuses and schools.
Blood donation is essential for hospitals to be able to take care of those who need it. This blood shortage could impact patients who need surgery, victims of car accidents and other emergencies, or patients suffering from cancer. The demand for blood products (blood, platelets and plasma) is constant, even when the world isn't in the midst of a global pandemic.
"We are excited to be hosting a blood drive here in town. If anyone is wondering what they can do to help during this pandemic, donating blood is a great way to give back." said Kellie Ann Keyes, Blood Drive Coordinator.
Additional questions can be directed to Kellie Ann Keyes at 973-448-2053.

Lake Hopatcong Veterans Cruise for 2020 - June 27
The date has been set as Saturday, June 27th for the 5th Annual Veterans Cruise on Lake Hopatcong, and that means the scramble for seats has already started for this special tribute to our veterans - America's heroes.
Each year Lake Hopatcong Cruises honors our veterans from the lake's four border towns - Hopatcong, Jefferson, Mount Arlington, and Roxbury - with a two-hour complimentary cruise around the lake, and a special tribute is paid to the veterans throughout the cruise as residents line the bridges and docks with waving flags in honor of the service that they have provided to our country.
This event is extremely popular with the Veterans and will fill quickly, so please contact your appropriate town representative to have your name added to the list as soon as possible. Last year in Hopatcong the first-come-first-served list filled within days and overflowed into a long waiting list. Click here to read more from Hopatcong Lake Regional News.
Lake Hopatong Block Party will now be held on Oct. 10
The annual Lake Hopatcong Block Party has been moved to Saturday, Oct. 10.
"As was announced earlier, in following the CDC directive on public gatherings, we unfortunately cannot hold the Lake Hopatcong Block Party on May 9," a statement from Lee Moreau of the Lake Hopatcong Foundation states.
"We are now moving forward on rescheduling the Lake Hopatcong Block Party to Saturday, October 10, the day before the LHF Lake Loop, also at Hopatcong State Park," he said.
"For those who have already responded requesting a refund, those checks will be issued April 13 and put into the mail.
Thank you for being a part of the Lake Hopatcong Block Party, and please stay safe and healthy," he said. Click here to read this coverage from the Roxbury Register.
