Community School Plans New Before and After Care Program for 2020/2021
Beginning September 2020, the Roxbury Community School, part of the Roxbury Township Board of Education, will be offering a new Before and After School Enrichment Services (RCS B.A.S.E.S.) program in its five elementary schools for grades K-6.
The decision to make the switch from the Roxbury Day Care Center, an outside organization to an in-district program has been in discussion with the administration for the past few years
and was solidified in latest round of the Strategic Plan.
By the district offering these services, we have the opportunity to serve more families start to finish while continuing instructional services with in-district staff to fill those educational gaps while providing the district an additional revenue stream which is beneficial to the taxpayers of Roxbury.
RCS B.A.S.ES. will be a part of Roxbury Schools as all Roxbury Community School programs fall under the auspices of the Roxbury Township Board of Education. Because of that, RCS B.A.S.E.S. can build a cohesive program with existing teaching and support staff members. Each of the K-6 locations will have a NJ state certified lead teacher and an assistant, both of whom will be trained in CPR, AED, and First Aid. These individuals are familiar with the students, the school, and the district's policies and procedures.
Because each location will have a state certified teacher, we'll be able to provide after-school homework support as these individuals are familiar with the district's curriculum and teaching strategies that can help make our students successful.
In the coming months, the district will be posting for these teachers and assistants to operate in the five schools.
This doesn't mean though that we wouldn't fill these positions with individuals from the outside. All of our job postings will be open for internal and external candidates and we encourage all qualified applicants to apply. This includes those before and aftercare staff members from the Roxbury Day Care.
By early January, the RCS B.A.S.E.S. website and registration will be available at
www.roxbury.org/BASES
. Information will be shared with all current before and aftercare families in the coming months.
There will be a public presentation on this program during the Monday, November 18th Board Meeting at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium at Lincoln/Roosevelt School at 34 North Hillside Avenue in Succasunna. We would encourage everyone to come out to hear about this exciting new opportunity. Click here to read more about this new program on our website under "In the News".
RHS Choir Members Perform at NJMEA All-State Music Festival in Atlantic City

The singers performed under guest conductor Doctor Sandra Snow from Michigan State University.
Junior Zachary Solano also represented the Roxbury Band Department as a tuba player in the All-State Orchestra.
They will perform again this Sunday, November 17th at NJ Performing Arts Center. This is the last New Jersey Music Educators Association All-State Mixed Chorus and Orchestra concert performance of 2019.

Nixon School 3rd Annual Green Fair Focuses on Fun with Recycling
Kermit the Frog once said, "It's not easy being green." Well, that doesn't seem to be a problem for students at Nixon Elementary School in Roxbury Township as they held their third annual Green Fair on Friday, October 18th with the help and organization of the Nixon School PTA Green Team. The theme of this year's fair focused on reusing and recycling various items.
The team created eight stations run by parent volunteers and staff members for the students to rotate through and have fun in all while using reusable or recycled things found in the home.
Students created festive pumpkin sun catchers in the library made with old wire clothes hangers that could have been recycled but instead were used in a fun craft activity for the K-4 students.
Another station took place in the enclosed Husky Garden. Students went on a scavenger hunt to find different items found in nature.
Stations 3, 4, and 5 all tied together with children making, decorating, and racing cars similar to the pinewood derby-style event. Station 6 took more effort as students had to "shop" in teams for a relay race to identify various items that had the least amount of plastic. Stations 7 and 8 had children building and playing in cardboard villages.
All of this wouldn't have been possible without the PTA Green Team Planners and Volunteers! Thanks for helping our students find enjoyment in being green! Click here to read more about this green fair on our website under "In the News".
Rox-THON gets their Flock on
Flocking is back at Roxbury! It will begin this fall and continue until the ground freezes, before resuming next spring; all weather dependent. While the fundraiser remains the same, the organization bears a new name. Putting more of an emphasis on our local community, Roxbury High School's mini-THON will now be known as Rox-THON. It is the same group of students working towards the same cause, however, a majority of our proceeds will now stay here in Morris County.
Starting this year, donations will go to Goryeb Children's Hospital (Morristown, NJ) and 30% of those proceeds will support pediatric cancer research and medical bills through Four Diamonds (Penn State Children's Hospital). Roxbury High School will also host its 7th Annual event to fight childhood cancer on Friday, March 13, 2020.
"Flocking is super simple! Flocking is when you harmlessly prank your friends by signing up for us to put a flock of plastic flamingo
s on their lawn," explained Captain Holly Van Ness, a senior at the school.
If you would like to flock-a-friend, you can choose how many flamingos you want to migrate to your friend's yard for up to 48 hours. A small flock of only 10 flamingos is only $15, a medium flock of 30 for $25, or you can choose a large flock of 50 flamingos for $35. If you have a special occasion, you may also choose to request a specific date for an additional $15. Click here to read more on our website under "In the News".

Roxbury Volleyball Updates:
Roxbury Volleyball Coach is Upbeat About Next Year as Season Closes
The season ended not-so-happily this week for the Roxbury High School volleyball team, but coach Anthony McMichael said he's proud of the Gaels' performance and looking forward to next year.
Roxbury had only two seniors on the roster this year, Jessica Allen and Stephanie Lemanis, meaning that the team will retain most of its talent instead of losing a big chunk to graduation. "We've had a lot of youth on our team," McMichael said. "The core of the team will all be back for another run."
McMichael is upbeat about the future of the Roxbury volleyball program. "The girls work hard," he said. "They are the hardest working girls I could ask for. They are just fun to be around and I'm just happy they are coming back."
The team ended the season with a 20-9 record. Click here to read more from TAPinto Roxbury.

Park in Roxbury Would Expand 10 Acres Under County Plan
Veterans Memorial Park in Ledgewood will be expanded by more than 10 acres under a funding plan recommended Wednesday by a county panel.
The county Open Space Trust Fund Committee included the project in a list of six open space projects throughout the county it recommended for funding by the county freeholders.
The Veteran's Park expansion is slated to cost $28,000, according to the county.
"Located off Emmans Road near the Mount Olive border, this upland forest is adjacent to Veterans Memorial Park," the county said in a statement. "The wooded property is key to connecting two of Roxbury's open space tracts via a trail system. The terrain and proximity to existing trails in Veterans Park will enable a trail connection from the park to Emmans Greenway located to the south."
