Thank You to All Who Served

On behalf of the Roxbury Township Public Schools, we'd like to take a moment to thank all the brave men and women who have served our country in the armed forces as we approach Veteran's Day on Monday, November 11th. Thank you for your service!

Jefferson Kindergarteners Thank Our Veterans
Small acts of kindness continue to flourish at Jefferson Elementary School in Roxbury Township where Kindergarteners recently made cards for our country's Veterans in honor of the upcoming Veteran's Day. These highly decorated and colorful cards will be passed out at a Veteran's Hospital in Delaware.
Students not only made cards but learned a little too. Kindergarten Teacher Meghan Storm shared, "Students talked about the branches of the military and expressed how thankful they were about what the military does for our country." Click here to read this story on our website under "In the News".

Roxbury School Psychologist Recognized with Externship Commitment Award
One of Roxbury's School Psychologists, Deborah Wetreich was invited last weekend to attend the Lafayette College Volunteer Awards Ceremony where she was honored with the "Externship Commitment Award".   Wetreich, an alumnus of Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania has hosted Lafayette College students as "externs" in the Roxbury Public Schools for the past ten years.

Lafayette students participate in a career shadow experience through the College's Career Services Department over Lafayette's January break. These college students learn about the roles and responsibilities of a School Psychologist in a public school district.

"This volunteer effort is a way for students to experience the profession first hand as they are deciding on future career choices," shared Wetreich.

Lafayette honored its ten-year participants at the Alumni Volunteer Award Ceremony where a fall luncheon and Tiffany gift were provided. Click here to read this story on our website under "In the News".

Rox-THON gets their Flock on
Flocking is back at Roxbury! It will begin this fall and continue until the ground freezes, before resuming next spring; all weather dependent. While the fundraiser remains the same, the organization bears a new name. Putting more of an emphasis on our local community, Roxbury High School's mini-THON will now be known as Rox-THON. It is the same group of students working towards the same cause, however, a majority of our proceeds will now stay here in Morris County.

Starting this year, donations will go to Goryeb Children's Hospital (Morristown, NJ) and 30% of those proceeds will support pediatric cancer research and medical bills through Four Diamonds (Penn State Children's Hospital). Roxbury High School will also host its 7th Annual event to fight childhood cancer on Friday, March 13, 2020.
"Flocking is super simple! Flocking is when you harmlessly prank your friends by signing up for us to put a flock of plastic flamingo s on their lawn," explained Captain Holly Van Ness, a senior at the school.
If you would like to flock-a-friend, you can choose how many flamingos you want to migrate to your friend's yard for up to 48 hours. A small flock of only 10 flamingos is only $15, a medium flock of 30 for $25, or you can choose a large flock of 50 flamingos for $35. If you have a special occasion, you may also choose to request a specific date for an additional $15. Click here to read more on our website under "In the News".

The Roxbury High School football team's season came to a close Friday night with a crushing loss to West Morris Central.  Playing in Chester on a chilly night, the Gaels were defeated 49-7 by the Wolf Pack. The loss left Roxbury with a 2-7 record for the season.  It was the final high school gridiron action for graduating seniors Dominic Badgley, Tyler Doerr, Jakob Giammarino, Luke Hathaway, Charlie Lisa, Jorge Rivera and Anthony Tye. Unbeaten Roxbury Junior Gaels Head to Football Conference Championship
The 8th Grade Roxbury Varsity Junior Gaels didn't lose a game this year. One more victory and the 13-year-olds will be the champions of their conference.  The game will be held Saturday, Nov. 9 at 4 p.m. in Jannarone Park, Parsippany.  The team's regular season ended on Oct. 26 with the young athletes celebrating their undefeated season and No. 1 seed in the Iron Division of the Morris County Youth Football League.  The team won the championship two years ago as Pee Wees and are ready to bring it back to Roxbury before they head into high school. The players, who love their community and the sport, are just as dedicated off the field; this year this team raised almost $1,000 and purchased much-needed equipment for the football field Snack Stand.  They also spruced-up the Snack Stand a bit with paint and banners as a way of showing their gratitude and to celebrate Horseshoe Lake's new turf field. Roxbury Gymnastics Updates:
Gymnastics: Roxbury arrives with North Jersey, Section 1 title
By the time Mount Olive moved to floor with the lead at the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 1 meet on Saturday, Roxbury had been waiting for well over an hour and found itself trailing by less than five hundredths of a point.  With Mount Olive competing in an auxiliary gym and all other events in the main gym finished, all eyes were on Roxbury and its senior captain, Tiffany Zieba.  Despite counting two falls in the first routine and one in the third, Roxbury needed just a 8.875 from Zieba to secure the first sectional title in the program's two-year history.

Competing a college-level beam routine, Zieba came out confident, nailing her back handspring-layout stepout series and switch split-back tuck combination. With most of her difficult elements behind her, Zieba landed a front tuck on one knee and found herself standing on the mat.  It did not matter.  The judges flashed a 8.9 for Zieba, who had no idea she had just led her team to a sectional title, defeating Mount Olive 105.95-105.925. In this section, you will find various green initiatives, events, and tips to live a healthier, greener life.

Girl Scouts Help Neighbors with Fall Cleanup
Several Succasunna children and their parents gathered recently to rake leaves in the yard of a neighbor who needed some help.  When the kids were finished with the cleanup, the woman told the group her neighbor recently underwent quadruple bypass surgery and was unable to do his fall cleanup. So the group crossed the street and tackled his yard as well.'

"It was a great way to spread Roxbury kindness and to help neighbors in need," said one mom.

The students who volunteered include Julianna Uccello, Nicholas Uccello, Kyle Corrado, Becca Corrado, Kimmie Corrado, Amanda Pieklo, Alyna Pieklo and Victoria Phelan-Fonseca.  Julianna, Becca, Amanda, Kimmie, Alyna and Victoria are also part of the MARS Girl Scouts.

Roxbury Township Pitches Together on Clean-Up throughout October
Project Graduation
Throughout the month of October Roxbury Township has dispatched groups of volunteers that included young scouts, high school clubs, and green enthusiasts all giving their time to clear litter from many roads and parks throughout town.

Although the ground is covered in leaves this did not stop groups from diving in and removing 88 bags of trash and 19 bags of recycling totaling over 1,000 pounds of mixed materials being removed from our roadways, parks, and streams. This number does not include tires, furniture, office chairs, lumber, brick, concrete, various heavy metals, pool stairs, car parts and bicycles which could easily add another 1,000 pounds or more to the total number of weight collected.

We were lucky to have a number of groups such as the Roxbury High School Lacrosse team, Project Graduation and a number of scout troops who had a large group of participants sign up. This gave us an opportunity to "deep clean" some of the targeted areas. Although many of the areas have had surface clean ups in the past, we were excited to have these larger groups thoroughly work through these areas. The groups were able to remove items that have been buried for some time, increasing our overall collection number. Click here to read more from Hopatcong Lake Regional News.

Roxbury Cop, a Former Marine, Departs to Fight 9/11 Related Cancer
Thanking all who attended a farewell ceremony today, Roxbury Police Patrolman Thomas Denicola said he decided to retire early to focus on fighting the cancer he acquired while guarding Ground Zero as a U.S. Marine on 9/11.  The 47-year-old Roxbury resident, who is married and has two children, is the first police officer in New Jersey to benefit from a new law giving disability coverage to police and firefighters suffering from illnesses related their work at the World Trade Center following the terrorist attack.

Without the new law, Denicola would have been required to serve another six years before retirement, he said today. Among other illnesses, Denicola is fighting multiple myeloma - a form of bone cancer - found to be related to Denicola's exposure to carcinogens at Ground Zero.
